Prayer Ended Man’s Trial.
The case of Jordon Swain, un
der indictment for the murder of
W. C. Beasley, near Mt. Vernon
last October was brought to a stid i
den and unexpected close iinmedi
ately after court went into session
Tuesday, says the Dawson News.
On taking the bench of the
Oconee circuit four years ago
Judge Martin instituted the prac
tice of opening court with pray
er, a minister usually performing
this service. Rev. Joe S. McDan
iel was present as a witness for
the state against Swain, and up
on invitation offered prayer.
Referring to the prisoner in his
prayer the minister said: “1 pray
for mercy for this poor boy who
is now on trial for life. His hands
arc stained with the blood of his
victim, and 1 hope that when he
comes to die, which he must, the
great God will forgive him for
his erime. If he fails to get for
giveness in this world I hope he
will be forgiven in the world to
ccine. (), Lord, have mercy up
on this poor sinner, whose hands
are dyed in the blood of his fel
low man. * * * May the doc
tors of the law in this case speak
t uthfully, honestly and not lie. ’
After tlm prayer by Rev. .Mc-
Daniel Solicitor Graham began
argument for the state, when to
the surprise of a crowded -court
house Attorney Cooper, for the.
defense arose with a motion for
a mistrial, based upon the allu- .
s' n of the minister to the prison ,
er. His motion was sustained j
and a mistrial declared by Judge (
Martin, and the jury discharged. ,
Swain was returned to jail. ]

A Toast to Woman
This beautiful toast to woman I
was originally given by a man <
who had been a hard drinker but I
who liad turned from the wine 1
cup and become one of the lead- 1
ing lights of the legal profession.
The occasion was a banquet in <
Philadelphia on April 17, 1881. >
It is follows: 1
“I should like to propose a 1
toast tonight, although a total I
abstinence man myself—l toast I
to woman. To be drunk, not in
liquor or any kind, for we should
never pledge a woman in that
which may bring her husband
reeling home to abuse where In;
should love and cherish, sends
her sons to a drunkard’s grave,
and her daughters to a life of I
shame. Oh, no not in that but -
rather in the life giving water <
(pure as her chastity, clear as i
her institutions, bright as her <
smile, sparkling as the laughter
<>f her eyes, cheering as her eon- ■
solation, strong and sustaining as
her love—in the crystal water I
would drink to her that she would
remain queen regent to the em
pire she has already won, ground
ed deep as the universe in love;
built up and exercised in the
hemes and hearts of the world, I
would drink to her, the full blow
flower of creation’s corning, of
which man was but the bud and
blossom, to her who in childhood
clasps our little hands and teaches
us to lisp the first sweet prayer
to the Great-All-Father, who
comes to us in youth with good
counsel and advice, who in man
hood meets our heart yearnings
with the faithfulness of conjugal
love, and whose hand, when our
feet go down in the shallow
gently smoothes the rough pil
low of death as none other can;
to her who is the flower of flow
ers, the pearl of pearls. God’s
latest, best and brightest gift to
man —woman, peerless, pure,
sweet, royal woman.”—Elkdom.

OBITUARY
God in his providence has seen
fit to enter our church and take
unto Himself Sister Lillie Belle
Cobb, who was born June the 12,
1871, was married July the 4th
1889; Wits converted and united
with Pleasant Grove church
in 1902 and was baptized by her
pastor, Rev. B. F. Hunt. She
departed this life March 13, 1909.
She was a consecrated Chris
tian, loyal to the church, always
interested in everything that
tended to promote the cause of
her Redeemer. The announce
ment of her death carried a
thrill of sorrow to the hearts of
her numerous friends and rel
atives.
As it was God’s will to take
this Christian when he did. though
we are unable to see why she
should be 'called away from
the home and church just at this
time. Yet we know it was best
for we are taught that all things
work together for good to them
that love the Lord. Let us there
fore with humble submission bow
and say ‘‘Tilly will be done.”
Sister Cobb was not permitted
to attend church regularly for
several years on account oi fee
ble health. But when in our midst 1
her sweet spirit and quiet. lovable
manner endeared her to all with
whom she came in contact. To
know her was to love her. As
a wife she was true and devoted,
affectionate and kind as a moth
er, ready to make sacrifice to de
ny herself for the sake ot her
children. How sad it is to see a
mother taken from her children,
but, we know our Heavenly Fath
er is full of love and mercy and
will watch over and protect them
We would say to the bereaved
children and broken-heaerted bus
band to weep not, but strive to
live as she lived, so when the
death angel knocks at your door
you too, may be ready to go.
Whereas, it. has pleased our
Heavenly Father to remove Sis
ter Cobb from our midst, let. us
bow in humble submission to
Him, wh'o doeth all things well.
'Therefore, be it, Resolved,
First, That we commend the
lit." of Sister Cobb as worthy of
our emulation, knowing that her
life has left a lasting impression
for good hi our church and com
munity.
Second, That a page on our
church book be dedicated to her
memory, a copy of Ibis memo
rial be furnished the. family ot
our deceased sister and a copy
be sent t.o The Summerville News
for publication.

Whooping Cough,
This is a more dangerous disease than
is generally presumed. It will he a sur
prise to many to learn that rno’e
deaths result from it than from scar
let fever. Pneumonia often results
from it. Chamberlain’s Cough Rem
edy has been used in many epidemics
of whooping cough, and always with
the best results. Delbert, MeKeig of
