A man has accidentally dis covered away to stop washes on farm lands that will appeal to every farmer, says an exchange. The plan is to stretch hog wire fence across the gullies and nail to posts iset deep in the ground. The wire fence catches and holds all trash, the trash holds the sand and soil washed down, while it allows all the water to escape. In this way the gully is soon filled. The fence beats the rock dam, as it does not hold the wa ter on the land, but does hold I all solid matter. THE SUMMERVILLE NEWS, THURSDAY, JUNE 3, 1909. CONTRACT LET FOR ROME RAILROAD. Rome, Ga., —The Rome and Northern Railway company has let the contract to Burke & Jo seph of Cape Girardeau, Mo., to build its line from Rome north to Gore. Ga.., eighteen miles, and thence southeast and northwest parallel with the Taylor Ridge mountains, about fifty miles. R. G. Peters Salt and Lumber company is back of the road, and as they are said to be the repre sentatives of the United States Steel company in the south, great significance is attached to the fact that they will be in charge of the undertaking. This move of the United States Steel compa ny is very significant in that it is a further move on their part to obtain possession of the ore mines of the south in competition with the newly-organized South ern Iron and Steel company. Tfie railroad running as it does through the heart of the mines will be of great assistance to the United States Steel company in procuring for themselves added facilities for the transportation , of the metal and iron which is drawn from these richly ored lands. The construction of the railroad will be in charge of J. B. Richard general superintendent for Burke & Joseph. 5 To relieve constipation, clean out the bowels, tone and strengthen the digestive organs, put them in a nat ural condition witli Hollister’s Rocky Mountain Tea, the most reliable ton ic for thirty years. 35 cents. Two decis ions were handed tlown, against the city of Waycross and against the city of Thomasville. It was ' decided that the Waycross ordi- ■ rance governing the sale of near- I ocer is invalid because the regu- )lions prescribed are so stringent eat no one eould possibly comply with them amounting to the pro- ■ hibition of the sale of near-beer. The fact is person al importance is at the bottom of this whole thing. The world is not thinking about you—has no desire to hurt you —but you imagine that the whole world should be run in your interest.— Ex. There are in the United States 298 Sanatoria, 222 Dispensaries and 290 Associations for the treatment for prevention of tu berculosis, while there are 600,- 000 cases of this disease in the country. Men past middle life have found comfort and relief in Foley’s Kidney Remedy, especially for enlarged pros tate gland, which is very common among elderly men. L. E. Morris, Dexter, Ky., writes: ‘‘Up to a year ago my father suffered from kidney and bladder trouble and several phy sicians pronounced it enlargement of the prostate gland and advised an operation. Lowry’s address before Group Four of the Georgia Banker’s Association, held at Columbus, Ga., in April 26, last. It outlines a plan which in various forms is now being much discussed. The entire ad , mirable address has been publish ed in pamphlet form under the above name: “Ou account of the fact that it is necessary for the planter to sell his cotton to pay his debts, this crop is practically forced upon the. market iu a lump inside of about four mouths. Now in the Western States these immense el evators are the direct means of saving to the farmers of that sec tion, millions of dollars annually. For instance, a man in the West, we will say. raises 1000 bushels ot wheat, life gathers it, and carries it to a near by elevator, and it • is put into that elevator in bins, . classed as 1,2, 3, 4 and so on ac cording to grade, and a receipt is given to him for his wheat, de scribing it accurately, giving its I grade, the quantity, when stored ’ and all the data necessary to identify it beyond question, and the wheat is to be delivered only up< n the return of that receipt ■ properly endorsed. This receipt then becomes a good negotiable instrument, uniformly and univer sally recognized as an authentic and unquestionable security. The farmer takes that receipt to any bank and hypothecates it for such money as he needs to pay his ob ligations, and the, wheat remains ’ in the elevator as long as he secs fit to hold it, properly cared for, 1 insured and in good condition for immediate use. Os course, this security is only recognized for the reason that these elevators are ’ conducted on a strictly business basis, and their receipts can be verified, and, in fact, are only issued in a bona fide way, pro ’ tecting both the planter and the ’ baznker, wlio might advance mon ey on it. Now in the South, suppose a farmer raises 100 bales of cotton, and owes S2OOO or $2500. He . wants to, pay his debts, but he does not want to sell his cotton I during the period when the mar ket is glutted and when he would have to sell at a minimum price. He wants to hold his cotton for < a reasonable advance; and, if i there was a bonded public ware i house near by, conducted on the same business principles on which I the elevators of the West are' , run, where he eould store it at a ■ minimum expense, and have it ■ classed or typed, insured ami pro tected, and take a receipt for it, describing it, giving the quanti ty, quality grade, and so forth, that would be a good negotiable • security recognized everywhere : because it identifies the cotton, and all the facts set forth in the I receipt eould be verified, if nec essary, as well as the signature to it. Then the planter takos that receipt to his banker anywhere, i and gets the money to pay his debts, and he is enabled to hold I his cotton. This enables the South to husband its crop in the proper manner, and get the full benefit, of any advance in prices. • Now this plan would be an ex ’ eellent one, too, for the benefit. ‘ of our mills. We will take for • instance a mill that buys 8000 bales of cotton per annum. I’re- ’ ferably this mill would like to ’ buy the cotton in its immediate ■ neighborhood, hot. while the crop is being marketed within this four months, the management may not be in position to buy more than, say, 2000 bales. Un der present conditions the cotton when they need it, lias been ship ped away, and they must, buy and have the cotton shipped back to this section from a dis- ■ tanee, with all the additional ex pense of getting it back here. If it was stored in a bonded ware- ’ house nearby, and where it is known that it has been properly preserved and protected, he can buy at much less trouble and ex pense? right at home. If the mill wishes to buy a farmer’s cotton, ami it is in a bonded up- I i to-date cotton warehouse, conduct jed on sound business principles, 1 i CASTOR 'ini AVcgetable Preparation for As I simila t ing the Food andlleg ttla M 1 ling the Stomachs and 1 towels of ■ ■' —z zz I | Promotes Digestion,Cheerful- ■ I ness and Resl.Contains neither ■ i Opium,Morphine nor Mineral.
