VOL. XXII NO. 14. TEACHERS’ INSTITUTE MEETS NEXT WEEK Big Educational Rally Will be Held Wednesday The annual meeting of the Chattooga County Teachers’ In stitute will be in session here next week. The institute will convene Monday morning and continue for four days. A very interesting program has been arranged by County School Commissioner Jones. On Tues day at 11 o’clock Judge J. AL Bellah will deliver an address on “good roads, telephones and ru ral mail delivery as a means to good schools.’’ Commissioner Jones has ar ranged for a big educational rally on Wednesday, and some of Georgia’s ablest speakers have accepted invitations to be present and deliver addresses. Among those who will speak are Judge Moses Wright, of Rome; State School Commissioner Pound; Dr. A. M. Soule, president, of the State College of Agricul ture, and Dr. W. P. Lovejoy. Residing elder of the Dalton dis trict. Wednesday will be farmers day. Dr. Soule will deliver an address on agriculture and he is anxious to meet as many of the farmers of the county as possible on that day. Commissioner Jones extends a cordial invitation to every one interested in education to attend the Institute, and help make it a success. The farmers are espe cially invited to turn out and hear Dr. Soule’s address. LYERLY. Miss Annie Hill spent Friday with relatives in Summerville. Miss Lena Shearer has return ed from Broomtown. Mrs. Eugene Richardson has been real sick for several weeks. Mrs. J. L. Pollock left Tues day for Rome and Cave Spring where she will visit relatives for several days. Miss Lillian Echols has re turned from Summerville, where she has been visiting Mrs. Julia Hawkins. Miss Amy Doster is the guest of Mrs. Robert McLeod in Sum merville this week. Miss Beth Henley has return ed from Shorter College whe.re she has been attending school for some time. Miss Lula Williams of Chat toogaville was the guest of the Misses Porter Friday. Miss Ava Glenn spent the week-end with her sister, Mrs. John Busbin. J. T. Bryant was in Rome Tuesday. Messrs. Fred Dean and Eugene Hammond were in Menlo Satur day. Miss Maggie Jarnegan is spend ing some time with Mrs. Julia Hawkins in Summerville. Alfred Bryant made a business trip to Rome Friday. Misses Pearl Burney and Fan nie Porter were the guests of Mrs. Walter B. Hinton Friday. Little Miss Inez Doster has re turned from a visit to friends in Summerville. Several from this place attend ed the closing exercises of the Summerville school last Friday night and report a splendid en tertainment. Miss Rose Anderson has re turned to Raccoon after a pleas ant visit to relatives here. .Mrs. Grayson Shearer was the guest of Mr. Glazner Toles and family last Wednesday. Foy. the small child of Mr. and Mrs. 0. F. Doster, is recovering from a protracted illness. Miss Lizzie Smith and little Miss Alary Toles from Menlo are visiting friends in Lyerly. Mr. Ed Harrison, who is travel ling for an Atlanta firm, spent Sunday with his wife near town. Miss Alice Clemmons is spend ing several days with Miss An ny Doster. Miss Cora O’Bryant and Ar thur and Luther O’Bryant spent the week-end with relatives at Chesterfield. Mr. J. T. Stark is attending the reunion of the old soldiers in Memphis this week. Mr. John Trotter and family spent Sunday at the home of W. Al. Rich in Summerville. W. AL Jones made a business trip to Menlo Saturday. Millard Alosteller lost a bunch of keys between the livery sta ble in Menlo and the Foster old store last Saturday. If the find er will leave at Lyerly postoffice the kindness will be greatly ap preciated. Little Aliss Madalene Rich is spending sometime with Air. J. D. Trotter’s family at this place. Air. W. H. Henderson spent Sui day in Trion. Air. Jim Worsham and family were the guests of Air. Hollis' family Sunday. Air. John Pollock attended the meeting of the board of educa tion in Summerville Tuesday. Air. and Airs. Albert Perry vis ited relatives in Rome Saturday and Sunday. Guy Foster, formerly of this place, is spending sometime with his uncle, Air. A. J. Lee. Air. Willis King and bride came in Alonday afternoon to spend several days with Air. King’s parents. > Air. J. 11. Hill was in Chatta nooga Thursday. Eunice and George Anderse, have returned from a pleasan visit to their grandparents in Raccoon. Rev. Alahan filled his appoint ment here Saturday and Sunday Air. Bob Anderson was in Alen lo Tuesday. Air. G. T. Myers of Trion vis ited the Masonic lodge here Alonday and conferred the first degree on two candidates. Air. Myers is one of Georgia’s brightest Alasons. GORE Rev. E C. Jordon preached at Bethel Sunday at eleven o’clock. Airs. Joe Barren died at her home in Rome last Friday morn ing after an illness of several weeks. She was buried at Farm ersville cemetery Saturday. She leaves a husband, two sons and one daughter. A son and daugh ter having died in the last eigh teen months. T. P. Cummings and family of Silver Hill were visiting relatives here Sunday. Air. and Mrs. L. C. Moore spent Saturday night and Sunday near Silver Hill. Airs. Lou Gaskins and son spent Sunday with R. C. Bull man and family near Wayside. Thos. Weaver and daughter, Aliss Ola. visited relatives in Al abama Saturday and Sunday. Air. and Airs, ('rawford Davis of Texas Valley visited J. E. Drummond and family Sunday. Aliss Beatrice Bramlett of Tri on was the guest of the Misses Barron Saturday night. Clifton Barron and .Misses Ovelle and Bertha Barron, spent' Sunday at Silver Hill the guest of Aliss Nettie Winkle. 11. G. Baker spent Friday and Saturday with his daughter, Airs. McWilliams. Aleadows of Chattanooga, is in Alenlo on business. J. E. Thomas of Chattanooga is visiting relatives here this week. Airs. E. AL Jennings and Lee Jennings left for Texas last Wednesday, where they will vis it for a few weeks. Dr. E. Al. Jennings accompanied them as far as Chattanooga. S. T. Polk was in Chattanooga on business last week. Air. and Airs. D. (’. Springfield returned to their home in Gads den. Ala., last Alonday, after spending several days here vis iting relatives. Prof. Ransom was in Alenlo last week making arrangements for building a dwelling. Alarvin Sparks is at home on a vacation. Aliss Stella Aliller is visiting relatives in Chattanooga. Aliss Ola Ellis returned homo last Sunday after spending sev eral weeks here with friends. Airs. W. F. Henry is improving we are glad to report. W. S. AleClellan is visiting rel atives at Carrollton. Alisses Alinnie and Effie Polk are visiting in Chattanooga this week. Gordon Baker is visiting rela tives in Chattanooga, for a few days. John Coker ami Jim Hogue have returned from Thom 4 asville and visiting in Tallahas see, Fla, They attended the grand lodge of I. (). 0. F. there instead of Huntsville, as was stated in last week’s paper. W. T. Hollis has accepted a position in the tieing-in room with the Trion company. Aliss Cora Massey spent Satur day and Sunday at her home in Teloga. Aliss Cordia Bruce of Welcome Hill spent Wednesday and Thurs day with Aliss Aggie Bell Alulli nax. Bud Townsend, a daughter, on last Sunday. Born to Mr. and Airs. Frank Gilreath, a son, last Friday. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Ander son Griffitt a son on last Friday. Aliss Maud Thomas left Mon day to spend a week with Airs. Pickard in Izafayette. Frank McWilliams returned from Atlanta Wednesday. G. T. Myers went down to Lyerly .Monday to attend a spe cial meeting of tin- Masonic lodge. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roberson and children visited Airs. Son Hawkins in Alabama City the past week ami returned home on last Sunday. The infant child of Air. and Mrs. Joe Barnett died Thursday morning and was buried I‘riday at the Trion cemetery. Rev. T. |J. Ratliff conducted the service. The infant child of .Mr. and .Mrs. 11. D. Dean died Saturday morning and was buried Sun day afternoon at the Trion cem etery. Rev. H. Al. Strozier con ducted the funeral services. J. D. Whitehead left Alonday for Moody, Texas to visit his brother., E. AL Whitehead. Air. Rex Wyatt, has gone to Alemphis, Alaster Charlie is in Menlo, Carlton is in Chickamau ga, with E. 11. Wyatt and Alil ner is visiting Calhoun Powell in Lyerly. How could one be quite so des perate as to threaten to depart these coasts if one could not own a horseless carriage that made a noise like “honk, honk.’’ “Oh to be the real owner of an auto mobile,” sighed Gene AlcWil liams long ago, “would make me perfectly happy.” When Mr. King l brought his machine up from Rome and took several spins Gene was sure that a man who could not own an automobile ought to go out and hang him self. But h<‘ was desperate when Air. Thompson brought his ma chine home from Atlanta. It was then that Gene vowed he’d have an automobile if he had to rent one and tie it round his neck and jump into the reservoir. “Oh, me,” exclaimed tin* pretty miss who heard him utter these rash threats. “How can 1 save him?” When there’s a will there’s a way.’ So early Monday morning Gene was informed that there was an immense box for him at the express office, bear ing th'e name “automobile.” How his fingers did tremble Indore he could get to see it and there was his heart’s desire—a real automo bile—a tiny souvenir of Trion, Ga All he did was to grin and bear it. Aliss Ella Anderson returned home from Holland Saturday. Air. and Mrs. J. E. Mathis of Summerville visited A. L. Rag land and family Sunday. Rev. A. F. Mahan spent Sun day in Lyerly. Henry Clark dashed away from him last Sat urday afternoon while standing in front of a. store in Summerville The team was soon stopped with out an accident except a bad scare to little Ruth, who was in the buggy. Mrs. Warthen and Mrs. West and little Aliss West of Lafayette spent Tuesday with Mrs. AL A. Allgood. Messrs. Alfred Hamilton and DeForest Hamilton are expected home from Culver, Ind. Friday. Among those who left. Monday for the reunion in Memphis were T. J. Anderson, T. 11. Pennigton, T. J. Ross, Wyly Davis, San Wooten, John Wooten, West Gray. Tom Maxey, Jack Hicks, G. B. Alyers, W. W. Hudson Fletcher Cochran, AL AL Petty john and Gain- Howell. Before returning home ’Mr. Pennington will spend some time at Hot Springs, Mr. Ross will go to Wil erford, Tex., Air. Hudson will go out to Russelville, Ark., Air. Pettyjohn will visit his sister in Texas and Mr. Gabe Howell will go to Wilerford, Texas. Air. John Coker had the mis fortune to stick a nail in his foot last Tuesday and has suf ferexl with it since Sunday. Aliss Georgia Green is visit ing -Mrs. Fred Huron in Afentonc this week. The Knights of Pythias of ONE DOLLAR A YEAR MASONS TO MEET HERE JULY 14 AND 15. Corner Stone of New Court Home Will Be Laid By Officers of Grand Lodge on the 15. The eighth annual meeting of the Chattooga Alasonic Conven tion will be held here Wednes day ami Thursday, July 14 and 15. On the second day of the con vention the corner stone of Chat tooga’s new court house will be laid by the officers of the Grand Lodge. Worshipful Master J. AL Rose, who is at the head of the con vention is now arranging a. pro gram for the big gathering A number of distinguished Alasons w,d be invited to attend the con vention, among them Grand Alas ter Jeffries, of Atlanta, the lead er of Georgia Alasonry. The lo cal lodjge will meet on the third Friday night and appoint com mittees to make arrangements for entertaining the visitors and ilelegates to the convention. Mr. Rose sends the following notice in regard to the conven tion. “The Chattooga County Ala sonic convention, will meet with Summerville lodge No. 109, F. & A. AL the second Wednesday and Thursday in July which is the I I and 15. “The first day will be for transacting the business of the convention. The second day the corner stone of the new court house will be laid by the officers of the Grand lodge. They will also confer the third degree in llk afternoon. “Let each lodge in the county have a good representation on life first day and we want every Mason in title county to be pres ent the second day, as this con vention promises to be one of Hu best we have ever had. ‘ Report blanks will be sent i.o each lodge in a few days. Please fill them out and send them to Bro. S. C.
