Where Patriots Come From
j. The patriot is not born in the

poverty degrades and failure

he comes from the rural districts

valleys—the rolling hills —where
h'e is permitted to live close to
nature and nature’s God.
Every faculty of his mind is
there developed—every part of

LAUREL HILL, FLA.
Again. Mr. Editor, I wish to
drop you and your readers
a few lines as to what has been
done and what may be done.
Our farmers have corn from 4
to 5 feet high on down. Cotton
almost knee high, velvet beaus
are looking fine, sweet potatoes
are here with long vines.
Logging is the go of the day.
while pine gum runs without de
lay. Some people go to church
with a heart full of cheers, while
others go with their eyes full of
tear-'. One thing has been done
that was the hanging of a negro
murderer who killed another ne
gro minister. This hanging oc
curred at our county site on or
about May 14. It is only 24
miles to the above town. But
I did not deem it profitable to see
a man hang.
I visited De Funiak. our county
site (taring the Florida Chautau
qua of March 27. I wish to give
the reader- a hint about this
beautiful liMlq town of about
2500 people. The town its self is
beautiful on account of the pretty
sJhade trees. It has a very beau
tiful lake and as round as a dol
lar and one mile in circumference
Which makes it very' pretty to
boat ride on or bathe in. It also
affords a place for the health
seekers. Alpine springs is a com
plete curative for those suffering
with kidney trouble. It has re
stored many to health and vigor.
There are many lakes of rare
beauty, near De Funiak where
those fond of water can row and
fish to their hearts content.
In a word, De Funiak is a beau
tiful town and affords plenty of
pastime and more than that, it is
very healthy, being 300 feet above
sea level, marks the highest al
titude by U. S. survey in Florida.
It i - 60 miles from the gulf of
Mexico, whose breezes come
tempered with sweetness and la
den with health through miles of
primeval pines. More than this
if you wish to see De Funiak just
let me know when you will
try and come and I’ll try and
show yon all important points at
ai d around that place if you wish
I wish to call your attention to
our fine pasture land of which
there are hundreds of acres open
to range. Cattle, sheep, goats
and hogs are fat on this vast open
track of good, but cheap, land.
I wish to say that our society
is somewhat on the rise. Good
church services, good schools and
a string of fislil and a hoe cake
of bread and good water, pure
air and good health.

KING COTTON
According to the common un
derstanding, the expression “king
cotton,” or “cotton is king,” was
first used by the Hon. James 11.
Hammond in the state of South
Carolina, the chief product, of
which commonwealth was cotton.
Mr. Hammond’s idea was that
cotton, being the great commer
cial export of this country and
the chief article of manufacture
in Great Britain, was “king” and
that no politics was allowable
that crossed the grain of the
“king’s” interests. —New York

MEN PAST FIFTY IN DANGER.
Men past middle life have found
comfort and relief in Foley’s Kidney
Remedy, especially for enlarged pros
tate gland, which is very common
among elderly men. L. E. Morris,
Dexter, Ky., writes: ‘‘Up to a year
ago my father suffered from kidney
and bladder trouble and several phy
sicians pronounced it enlargement of
the prostate gland and advised an
operation. On account of his age
we were afraid he could not stand
it and I recommended Foley's Kid

Wonderful Increase in Use of
Both in Farming Communities j
A few short years ago 1 re
member when the rural telephone
was a wonder itself in a commu
nity and anybody with connec
tions were getting new notions
about agriculture in their minds
and it wouldn’t stand, the grum
blers said, but now a community
without a rural telephone system
takes second rank as an agricul
tural community. Despite the
fact that last year was 1 a compar
atively poor one in this section
of the south, still 1 am told that
the demand for automobiles can
not be supplied. A dealer states
that he is representing two com
panies and has sold out his en
tire allottment for the year be
fore May is here.
The farmers of the west have
been buying machines for a coup
le of years but it is only recent
ly that Georgia folk have start
ed to get them. The purchas
ing of automobiles means that
a great wave of sentiment for
good roads will sweep over the
state, and in view of the fact that
the convicts of the state are now
at work on the roads it seems
a settled fact that within the nex
few years Georgia will have about
ono of the best road systems in
the country. The slate is one oi
the first to- abolish the convict
lease system and first Io pul thd
convicts on the roads. 11 means
more for the state than can ever
he ('numerated, for it will ulti
mately result in bet ter I arms,
better livestock, better seed for
planting, more money, more hap
piness and an unparalleled ad
vancement in lands.-Rhea llayne

Little Thing- of Life.
Why is it that we so easily for
get that, the little things in life
are what make it easy or hard? A
few pleasant words, a warm hand
clasp, a cordial letter, are simple
tilings, but they are mighty in
their influence on the lives of
those about us, adding a ray of.
hope to many disconsolate hearts,
giving a bit of courage to disap
pointed weary ones, and helping
to make our own lives sweeter at
the same time. Few people real
ize how much the little things of
every day life mean to their as
sociates in tine home, the church,
the business place. It is generally
a lack’ of consideration which
makes one forget the tiny pleas
ar.tries; but lack of consideration
is really one form of selfishness,
and selfishness is not considered
a desirable quality. Remember
that the little things of life, cith
er good or bad, count, for more
with those we love than we ever
know, and we should be watch
ful of our actions and our words.

A Magnifying Pinhole
Obtain a piece of blackened card
and make a hole in it with a
needle; then place a very small
object—say, for instance, a tiny
insect — on the end of a pin or
gnm to a strip of grass and view
this object through the needle
hole in the card at about an inch
from it. The insect will appear
quite distinct and about ten times
larg< r than it* natural s’ze. 'lt,
however, you suddenly with
draw the card without disturb
ing the object the latter will be
invisible. The reason is that, the
naked eye cannot see at so short |
a distance asan inch, but the card
with the bole enables the eye to
approach within an inch and seel
not only well, but, as it were, ten .
times better than with the naked
vision. -
