Miss Kate Howell, of Atlanta, ar
rived Tuesday and will spend several
days in Summerville the guest of her
sister, Mrs. A. T. Heath, on Com
merce street.
Misses Bessie Maxey and Alice
Clemmons have returned from Rome
where they spent several days last
week with Mrs. S. B. Hawkins.
Miss Florence Brown, of Elberton.
I is expected to arrive intown first of
next week on a visit of several days.
She will be the guest of Mr. and Mrs.

Mr. .1. B. Calhoun of Ringgold is
visiting his sister, Mrs. E, N. Mar
tin, this week. He is accompanied

Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Foster of near
Taliaferro spent Tuesday with their
daughter, Mrs. T. P. Taylor.
Misses Mary and Kathryn Foster
of Atlanta and Misses Mary Holland
of Holland are guests of their aunt,
Mrs. T. P. Taylor.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Pitts and
Misses Josephine and Annie Pitts
returned Monday from a delightful
trip through Texas.
Miss Whitfield has returned to Sun
merville, much to the delight of her
large circle of friends, who are pleas
ed to know that she will spend the
summer in town. Miss Whitfield is
the guest of Miss Beulah Shropshire.
At a meeting of the trustees of
Summerville Academy Tuesday Miss
Annie Pitts was elected teacher of
music for the ensuing year. The
action of the trustees will, no doubt, ,
be heartily endorsed by the patrons
ot the school, as Miss Annie is em
inently fitted to give the very best
service in that capacity.

party given by Master Hinton Bel
lah in compliment to Miss Marie
Merriam and Master Burgess Mer
riam of Rome. Cake and ices were
served after a course of ham sand
wiches and pickles,
Mrs. Frank Merriam of Rome was
the guest of honor at a charming re
ception given Thursday afternoon by
Mrs. J. M. Bellah at her lovely home
on Washington street. Other guests
were Mesdames J. D. Taylor, W. W.
Hinton, O. A. Selman, Howard Mc-
Ginnis, N. K. Bitting. T. P. Taylor,

Mr. Henry Housch Dead.
I Chattooga county has lost a good cit
izen in the death of Mr. Henry Housch
I which occurred Tuesday afternoon.
at his home four miles north of
town, after an illness of several years
duration.
Mr. Housch was born in Chattooga
county, fifty-one years ago. He was
an affectionate son, husband and
father; a kind neighbor and true
friend.
He was a faithful member of the
Methodist church and a Mason.
The interment was in the Housch
cemetery Wednesday, and was large
ly attended.
Rev. H. M. Strozier of Trion
Methodist church conducted the fu
neral service, after which his re
mains were laid to rest by his Ma
sonic brethren.
Mr. Housch is survived by his wife
and eight children; his mother - and
three sisters. Mrs. D. B. Franklin of
Texas, Mrs. T. J. Foster of Taliafer
ro and Mrs. America Hendrix of
Trion.
Mrs. J. P. Holland of Holland was
the guest of Mrs. T. P. Taylor on
last Wednesday.
Mr. G. J. Cochran and family are
at home to friends after this week,
in the residence on Church street,
lately occupied by Dr. E. M. Wright.
The little six months old child of
Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Parham died
Monday and was buried Tuesday in
the cemetery at Perennial Springs.

The Board of Education will moot
the trustees and patrons of Bethel
school district at Bethel church on
Tuesday the 20th, at 9 a. m. for
the purpose' of locating a building
site for the school house in said dis
trict. All parties interested arc in

ried at the home of the bride's par
ents last. Sunday. They are now nt
home to friends at Pennville. We
wish tile young couple a long, happy
and prosperous journey through life.

G. P. Mahan has purchased the
new 5-room residence recently erect
ed by H. A. Mathis on the corner of
Union and Walnut streets.
W. J. Farrow and family spent
the first of the week in Broomtown
valley.

day.

If the general assembly of Geor
gia, thru unanimous request, has in
fluence, Luther Burbank, of Califor
nia, wizard of the plant world, will
soon direct, his attention to improv
ing the cotton plant and increasing
its productiveness. Hooper Alexan
ander introduced in the house a res
olution asking Mr. Burbank to take
hold of this matter, fl passed house
and senate by unanimous vote, and
will now go to the Californian. He
has performed such miracles with
other plant life that it is believed he
could be equally successful witli the
cotton plant. His investigations and
experiments along this line will be
watched with keen interest, and may
mean finally millions to the cotton
