THE SUMMERVILLE NEWS, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1909. The History of the Mission Society | of Summerville Baptist Church (Published by Request.) i This society was organized in 1884 I with eleven charter members, by Rev. , I D. T. Espy, who was at that thus I our beloved pastor, and Miss Battie I Shropshire of Rome, Ga., who was I here engaged in teaching school. The names of twenty-six honorary I members were secured during the 1 I year and at its close, the contribu-: I tions amounted to $34.00. Although this amount seemed small we were encouraged to go on with the work because we remem bered that the Summerville Baptist church during the previous year, had given only $8.16, including $1.50 for minutes, as may be found today recorded in minutes of the 47th an- I nual meeting of Coosa Association, in • 1883. We struggled on through the years, meeting much opposition from sis ters as well as brethren, who defin ed woman’s sphere as being “within I the doors of her own home.” At all times, however, we were given the loyal support and helpful co-opera tion of our beloved pastor, Rev. D. T. Espy, who in 1892 organized Chat tooga’Association, by a union of churches from Coosa and Cave Springs associations, with the hope and pray er that our people might be better developed in spiritual growth, that f the Master’s Kingdom might be ex tended and our workers better equipp ed for service. ' During these years the contribu tions of the society increased and were divided between local church work, missions and ministerial educa ( tion. Among the students who were | aided through college by our society were, Revs. W. J. Durham, D. T. , Murdock and J. M. Haygood, all of t i whom are now in Texas, successfully ( | preaching the gospel of Christ. In 1894, two years after organiza ) tion of Chattooga Association and ten years after the formation of our , mission society, and after these wom en had contributed through their . church $880.58, they were reorganiz , ed by the brethren as church work l ers, and were given credit for their I contributions in the minutes of Chat r tooga Association. r This society is now 26 years old, I and the total sum given by its mem ■ bers during these years, amounts to . Three Thousand Nine Hundred and Thirty-nine Dollars and Thirty cents, t ($3,939.30) an average of something t more than one hundred and fifty-one > dollars per year, and yet we have I not done as much as we might have done. Let us begin now to redouble our efforts and work while we have , time and opportunity, remembering that we know not how soon we may join our sisters who have been pro t moted from our ranks and are now , with the hosts of the redeemed. r We have never given much time I to the discussion of rules regulating parliamentary usages or to the elec ' tion of new officers. We have been t | fortunate in having leaders, women I . ■ who were loyal and faithful, ami . ' we used them for all they were worth j just as long as possible. Those who have served as presi- j V dent are as follows: i- Miss Battie Shropshire, until her i return to her home in Rome; Mrs. s M. A. C. Bennett, to her removal to I t Cold Water district. Mrs. Jesse Sew u ell, to her removal to Texas. Miss - Fannie Bryant, to date of marriage. - Miss Ellen Pitts, to date of entering Shorter College. Mrs. J. N. Rush, J j to return of Miss Pitts from school. f i After that, time Miss Ellen Pitts was t our beloved and faithful leader to . date of her marriage and removal to Monroe, Ga., and since then, Miss Josephine Pitts has given us effi cient service, as you all know, as our i presiding officer. Among those now recalled who have served as secretaries and as treasur ers are, Mrs. J. N. Rush, Miss Lula > Sewell, Miss Allie Hunt, Miss Maude Calhoun. Mrs. T. P. Henry, Miss Maud Sewell, Mrs. Tom Rich, Miss Hunt, Miss Mattie Espy, Miss Allie Bryant, Miss Annie Pitts, Miss Minnie Henry. The contributions of our women have been made from their own funds as dues and as voluntary offerings when there was need for it. We have never resorted to ice cream festi vals and bazaars to secure money for . our work. Our officers have served without salaries, have purchased their lit erature and paid their own transpor tation to and from state conventions and meetings of the Woman’s Mis sionary Union. MRS. J. N. RUSH. Foley’s Honey and Tar clears the air passages, stops the irritation in the throat, soothes the inflamed mem branes, and the most obstinate cough disappears. Sore and inflam ed lungs are healed and strengthen ed, and the cold is expelled from the system. Refuse any but the gen uine in the yellow package. Hutchens, of Cedar town, to succeed the late Joseph S. Turner on the prsion commission. The annoucement did not come as a surprise, Judge Turner’s condition had been such for several weeks past that his death was only a matter of time and Gov. Brown selected Mr ’ Hutchens and secured his consent some time ago. Mr. Hutchens is one of the best known lawyers in the northern part of the state. He is a young man. not yet 40, but has had a ripe exper ience at the bar. At the time of his appointment Mr. Hutchens was regard ed as one of the strongest candidates for congress from the seventh dis trict. He made a good race for con gress some years ago. although en tering the campaign at a late dat.e The fact that Mr. Hutchens is a lawyer was one of the factors which prompted Governor Brown to make the appointment. Judge Turner was the only lawyer on the commission, which is constantly in need of legal advice. CONDITION OF COTTON Government Report Places It at 58.5 Per Cent.
