Women Suffer Agonies
from Diseased Kidneys
And Most Women Do This Not Knowing the
Real Cause of their Condition
These poor, suffering women
have been led to believe that their
misery of mind and body is entire
ly due to “ills of their sex.” Usually
the kidneys and bladder are re
sponsible—or largely so. And In
such cases, the kidneys and blad
der are the organs, that need and
must have attention.
Those torturing, enervating sick
headaches, dragging pains in back,
groin and limbs, bloating and swell
ing of the extremities, extreme
nervousness or hysteria, listless
ness and constant tired, worn-out
feeling—are almost certain symp
toms of disordered And diseased
kidneys, bladder and liver.

SELECT COTTON SEED
IN THE FIELD.
Every farmer who expects to
plant cotton next year should be
gin the selection of his seed at once,
unless he intends to change his
variety by the purchase of im
proved seed for the planting of the
next crop. In such case he may wait
I until next year, but if any of the
seed now growing are to be used, the
selection should begin at once.
In order to reduce cost and troub
ble, which have deterred many from
selecting their own seed, we suggest
that only sufficient seed be selected
this year to plant one acre, It will
only take a short time to go through
the cotton fields and mark about
three times as many stalks as will
be required to supply the seed to
plant one acre. These stalks should
be the heaviest, early-fruiting ones
to be found. Os course, they should
|be vigorous-growing, hearty stalks
as indicated by good foilage and
freedom from disease. When the
time comes for the second picking
the marked stalks should be again
examined and the seed cotton picked
only from those stalks which show
the largest yield and the highest and
most uniform quality of fiber, and
also the largest and best bolls both
for ease of picking and storm re
sistance.
It has been found that as a gener
al rule large yields go with large
bolls and a large percentage of lint
to seed, therefore, these characters
should be sought, but they should
not alone cause the selection of a
plant for seed. When they are.pos
sessed by plants also possessing the
other desired qualities, and in this
ease especially early fruiting, they
are very desirable features.
An extremely long fiber is not
usually found in heavy-yielding va
rieties, hence a fiber of moderate and
uniform length and quality should be
selected. —Progressive Farmer.

SPRAYING FOR SAN JOSE SCALE
(E. L. Worsham, State Entomologist)
The Georgia State Board of Ento
mology has recently concluded a se
ries of experiments with various sol
uble oils and lime and sulphur com
pounds as remedial measures for San
Jose Scale. The results of these ex
periments, soon to be sent out from
the Department in bulletin form, are
to be of value to fruit growers and
orchardists of Georgia.
The purpose of the experiments
was to test the efficiency of soluble
oil compounds as compared with the
standerd homemade preparation of
lime and sulphur, and the more re
cently introduced manuafctured com
pounds of lime and sulphur. Six dif
ferent oils were included in the tests,
as follows: Target Brand Emulsion,
Scale-cide, San-U-Zay, Soluble Petro
leum, Kil-O-Scale, Schnarr’s Scale
Componud No. 1, and Schnarr’s Scale
Compound No. 2. Two brands of
prepared lime and sulphur were used
alongside of the oil. These prepara
tions were the products of the Thom
sen Chemical Company and the Grass
selli Chemical Company, respective
ly. One plat of trees was sprayed
with the standard boiled mixture of
lime and sulphur, prepared on the
grounds.
Several of the soluble oils in the
above list have been known in Geor
\ gia for a number of years. They
have been used in different, sections of
i the State with varying degrees of
I success. Primarially they were in
j tended to fill the demand for an
j insecticide other than the home
! made lime and sulphur which there
lime and sulphur, with which there
was considerable dissatisfaction be
cause of the trouble involved in
making and applying it. To a large
extent they displace lime and sul
phur. Reports on the results obtain
ed from oils have not always been
satisfactory. It has been the experi
ence of many fruit growers that
they were unreliable, and there has
been much complaint from various
sources that they, as scale destroy
ers, were not entirely satisfactory.
Within the past two years prepared
concentrated lime and sulphur has
made its appearance in the field.
This compound is a reddish liquid,
strained and perfectly free of solid
matter. Two years ago it was tried in
an experimental way by the Depart,
ment, and promised well as a scale
insecticide. Last winter it was us
ed extensively in the commercial or
chards of the state and in every case
where it was applied the results were
of a very high order. Although not
showing on the trees as plainly as
the home-mdde material, it leaves
them a dull gray in color, sufficient
ly so to determine the quality of the
spraying. Beside the home-made
product of the lime and sulphur wash
the manuafctured article compares
most favorably. When manufactured
by a reliable company the latter is
really more uniform in composition
than the former.
The following is a summary of our
report on preparations used in our
experiments:
“It will be seen in the preceding
pages that all the oils included in
the test, particularly those whose
reputation is well established, gave
excellent results in controlling scale.
As a rule they may be depended up
on to give satisfaction when proper
ly and thoroughly mixed and applied.
Too great emphasis cannot be plac
ed on the necessity of doing the
actual field work thoroughly. An
inch of badly infested limb or twig,
left untouched by the spray, is ca
pable of largely re-infesting practi
cally the entire tree the following
summer.
“While each oil was applied as a
spring treatment and as a fall treat
ment, it was found in every case,
that the fall treatment was of su
perior effectiveness. This is a rule:
the earlier the spray can be applied
after the leaves have fallen, the bet
ter will be the net results, all oth
■er conditions being equal.
“The mechanical appliances of ap
plication are extremely important,
especially with soluble oils. A good
pump, devolving a high pressure, and
a nozzle throwing a direct, forceful
spray are very necessary to obtain
good results.
“The concentrated lime and sul
phur solutions, being free of all solid
matter, offer no more serious obsta
cles to easy spraying than the oils.
Under well regulated conditions the?
spray as easily as water might, and
are no more harmful to the person,
compared to the soluble oil com
pounds for efifciency, they yield
quite as good results as the best
oils, even when the latter are used
at a greater strength than that
recommended by the different manuf; i
turers. A tree well sprayed with lime
and sulphur always offers a cleaner,
brightei and healthier appearance
than a tree equally well sprayed with
an oil. Besides its strictly insecti
cidal value, lime and sulphur possess-1
eg fungicidal properties to a much'
greater d ire- than it is possible to
incorporate in a soluble oil."
THE CONDITIONS OF FARM LIFE
President Roosevelt \. country-lift
commission has lately made public
its careful and interesting report.
It asserts, of course, that agricul
ture is generally profitable, and the
conditions of rural life are steadily
improving. Still the farm is less
profitable as a business, and less at
tractive as a place of residence, than
it should be.
Many farms do not pay because of
bad roads and unintelligent cultiva
tion, ending in soil exhaustion. Prop
erly built roads, crop rotations, per
sistent maintenance of soil fertility,
are fundamentally necessary. The
commission also finds, in some dis
tricts. speculative holding of land,
control of streams and water-power
by interests which prevent the farm
er from utilizing these natural as
sets, and soil destruction following
wasteful deforestation.
A parcel-post, postal savings-banks,
a thorough study of taxation and
the tariff as it bears on the agricul
turalists, and an extension of the
principle of reciprocity are specific
recommendations which the commis
sion makes. It insists, too, on the
importance of an understanding of
the elements of hygiene and sanita
tion, and on the necessity of improv
ing the rural schools by introducing
practical methods of instruction sim
ilar to those so successful in the ag
ricultural colleges.
The problem of farm labor, it is
believed, can be met only by smaller
holdings and more systematic tillage,
—intensive farming, in short,— for
which many hired hands are not need
ed. Incidentally, it is noted that in
the older parts of the country, im
migrants, accustomed at home to
this sort of cultivation, are gradually
dispossessing the native stock.
