Will you please connect me with The News Office. —— Is that Mr. Espy? I just wanted to tell you that the people of Menlo are getting enthusiastic over the question of building a trolly line from Men lo to Trion via Raccoon Mills and Summerville. What do you think of the project? Why, yes, we think it is possible and altogether feasible, owing to the unprecedented development now going on all over the county, which to all appearances will continue for several years at least. We feel sure that now is an opportune time to agitate the propo sition Nothing surer than that all we have to do is to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the in vestment w’ould pay a reasonably good dividend and we could get all the money neededl suppose SIOO,OOO would be ample for con struction and equipmentNo trouble about business, in the first place we all want to go to Summer ville three or four times a year to visit our friends, our wives and daughters would go shopping much oftener than heretofore; another thing we expect to have at least twenty days of court in each year, if we had a railway to travel over we would send twice as many persons to town as have gone in the year past. Suppose we put the num ber of passengers at 100 for each day of court that would make 2000 fares at say 50 cents for the round trip, that would amount to SI,OOO at least every year Yes, but you must remember that is only one item. The Menlo community would evident ly spend twice as much on oth er occasions during, the year for car fare Yes you are right in that, tut don’t forget that we would go to Trion occasionally, especially on the 4th of July celebrations, when v, e all go, hot and dusty as it usuallj is. You see that would give us an c her SIOO besides our people often go to Rome and Atlanta and they come to Menlo .. ..Yes, a number o Georgia people visit the springs here every year. If we had better facili ties many more would come. .. •-» Ci course we would send our cotton to Trion, say 4000 bales which we would expect to collect from the im mediate neighborhood and the upper part of Cherokee and DeKalb conn ties, Ala.. This you know at 50 cts a tale would amount to $2,000. This vou see amounts in the aggregate to over $3,000 or an interest on about SBO,OOO, counting the interest at 4 per cent There are plenty of good talkers who would be only to glad to work for the enterprise for instance there is our mutual friend and co-w'orker, Col. Rivers and Mr. Bitting, both of them young and am bitious, ready and willing at all times to lend a hand. .... .. Yes, the route lies through a most favorable locality, the way is practically level, there being one cut of more than 6 feet between Menlo and Raccoon. That cut is less than 300 feet in lengthOf course we would expect the right of way to be donat ed by the land owners, as it would more than double the value of real estate along the linelf they will investigate land values at the present and before the Chattanooga Southern was built they will find that the prices of land has not only doubled but in many instances land that sold for less than five dollars is now bringing from forty to fifty dollars per acrel suppose you are correct in that, you will al ways find some peop.le ready to op pose any enterprise and contend that it is not right to give anything for the benefit of the public, when at the same time themselves are im measurably benefittedlf we could get the thing properly talked up we ought to have the whole job completed and cars running before first of June next year'Why not go to work now, get Judge Bel lah, Shropshire, Taylor, Cleghorn, in fact, everyone who feels an interest in the development of the county and its resources, begin to work without delayl think so, You might print a supply of blank options to be used in securing right of way, place them in the hands of men along the proposed line, who will take an interest in promoting the enterprise I think your suggestion is a good one. Suppose you appoint a day and ask one and all to meet in the county court house at Summer ville and discuss the matter, get the views of one and all who wish to offer a suggestion relative to the consumption of this important question. GOOD BYE. Ring Off. This is an Easy Test. Sprinkle Alien’s Foot-Ease in one shoe and not in the other, and no tice the difference.
