"What is a dollar, anyhow’" The
question is an easy one to answer A
dollar is what some men promise to
pay for their county paper It is
something a newspaper man > njoys
more in anticipation than in realtiy.
It is the price of a day's work for
some men and a single night's drink
for oth- rs. It is what Hie wife fro

Known to mankind. It is a blessing
h a small measure and curse in many
Instances. It is mighty and scarce
ka man ever had more than he want
and no man ever will. A dollar
is a snare and a delusion, and ev

A Few Thoughts From The “Empire
State of The South” —Georgia.
During my stay in this state 1
have met a large number of people,
most of whom seem to be honest,
earnest, energetic and industrious
citizens. People who have realized
that they are living not only for thmc
selves, but for others.
Knowing that this is their own
their native land the land they fought
for, the land they love, they are put
ting forth efforts to uphold and
strengthen it. The social bonds that
unite the people of Georgia are close
and complete and their character for
industry, honesty, and public spirit
has manifested itself in the de
velopment of the material wealth of
the state and in the progressive
spirit of her citizens.
Georgia is an agricultural state
and most of her people are engaged
in farming. The productions are cot
ton, corn, wheat, sweet-potatoes, Irish
potatoes, sugar cane, rice, fruits, pea
nuts and pecans. The annual yield
of cotton in Georgia is 1,500,000 bales
valued at SSO, 000,000. The corn crop
is about 35.000,000 bushels. The low
swampy lands of the tide water re-
I gion are given to the cultivation of
rice, of which about 7,500.000 bushels
are produced annually. Large quan
tities of water melons, cantaloupes,
cabbage. English peas, beans, okra
and tomatoes are produced and ship
ped to northen markets. Peaches of
the finest quality are grown in all
parts of the state. Georgia ranks
first in the production of this fruit,
and the anual products are valued at
or more than $5,000,000. (there is a
peach orchard near here containing
500 acres) The soil and climate are
adapted to the growth of grapes and
considerable attention is now given
to vineyards. Large quantities of
straw-berries and many other varities
of fruit and vegetables are abundant.
Georgia stands in the front rank
of the southern states in extent varie
ty and value of her manufactures.
Over one hundred cotton mills, valuet
at about $25,000,000 are in operation
in the state. The largest cotton mill
are located at Augusta and Columbus
where the rivers falling over the foot
hills which divide middle -Georgia
from the cotton seed and the meal
water power. A valuable oil is made
from the cotton seed ond the meal
and hulls furnish cheap and whole
some food for cattle and the meal is
also used as a fertilizer for which it
is very valuable. Recently a ma-
chine was invented for making paper
from the cotton stalk. This makes
the cotton plant by far the most use
ful plant cultivated. Every part
of it except the roots is used for the
good of man. Lumber manufacturing
is a very important industry in this
state. In the extensive yellow pine
forests of the southern section are
many large saw-mills. In the rosin
and turpentine industry Georgia
ranks first. Among the important
manufacturing enterprises may be
mentioned steel furnaces and foun
dries, machine shops for the manu
facture of agricultural implements,
furniture and carriage factories, ice
plants, clothing factories, marble and
stone works, electric light and pow
er works and canning factories.

ot the California Fig Syrup Co. and the
scientific attainments of its chemists have
rendered possible the production of Syrup
of Figs and Elixir of Senna, in all of its

inal principles of plants known to act most
beneficially and combining them most
