SOLD BY ALL DRUGGISTS BUY YOU A HOME | Every farmer who cultivates the land of another is foolish for doing ho. He should buy a home if he is able to pay a single dollar on it. The condition as it exists today is unsatisfactory to both land owm r and tenant. Unsatisfactory to the landlord because it is almost impost ; ble to buy a place, rent it out so that the rent will pay the interest on the investment and keep up repairs, in fact it cannot bo done at the present price of land. | Tile landowners in their efforts to make their farms pay a reasonable Interest on their investment are ex acting more rent than the tenant can afford to pay. As a result of tilts state of affairs our lands are getting poorer and poorer. The rent ers cannot afford to pay tie high standing rent required of them and ’ plant tile land in anything but cot ton. Consequently there is no such n thing as rotation of crops with the tenant. They stay at on» place, as a rule, only one or two years and rarely ev er ditch or terrace the farms they cultivate, hence worn out and wash ed away farms can be seen in ev ery section of country. The top soil is in the creeks and rivers, the cleared fields are seam ed with gullies. All the result of our tenant system. No man should own more land than he can cultivate. The day is not far distant when land monop- I oly will not be tolerated by civil ized nations when the big planta ‘lions will be a thing of the past. I The traveler, in passing through ! any agricultural section of our state '.can till at once whether the peo- I pie own their homes or live on rent -led land. We take the position that ■it would be better for both parties. landlord and tenant, if the former would cut his large farm into a num of small ones and sell them to their tenants if the latter are unable to make a single dollar eash payment Lei the tenants go on the farms and begin to improve them—to dean up the briar patches, fill up the gulleys and build rock dams across the sags. If they never pay any -1 thing but the interest on the pur chase price of the land it will still be better for both parties. The tenant will have a place he can cal! home, will not have to move from cne farm to another every year, van use the time he is now moving from place to place in improving his home. THE SUMMERVILLE NEWS THURSDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1909. I He will take a pride in beautifying | | his home, adding to the artistic! ! value of his farm as well as to the fertility of the soil. His good wife will make of the front yard a flow er garden. The children will be come attached to the place and ! love it. The birds will sing more sweetly for them there because it’s home. Every scene in the old homestead will be dear to them. , The big trees that stand at the 1 i spring, the hillside that surrounds I ; it and the vale through which their ' | brooklet flows will become their friends, will make them nature ' I loving and God fearing, wiil make I them better boys and girls. To own a home makes a man , I more patriotic and country loving— a better citizen.’’ —Tho Royston Rec ord. J. N. Paterson, night policeman of Nashua, lowa, writes; "Last winter I had a bad cold on my lungs and tried at least half a dozen adver tised cough medicines and had treat ment from two physicians without getting any benefit. LAW ENFORCEMENT Our Georgia problem right now is ' ! the enforcement of our prohibition law, and the enemies of prohibition would have us believe that it is prac tically an unsolvable one. Their pol icy is plain; first to keep busy mak ing it as difficult as possible, and sec , ond to push their campaign of educa i tion to teach the people that it is absolutely hopeless to enforce such a : law. And who are the actual ene mies of prohibition? Only those en gaged in the liquor traffic, or those dependent upon it for place and pow- I er. A comparatively small class i numerically, but powerful financially and implacable. All the rest of tho people are either indifferent or friends to the law, and its friends must be further divided into warm ami lukewarm. With these distinctions clear in the mind the problem does not seem so I formidable after all, and we begin to see that the idea so prevalent that it begets disregard for law and creates a school for lawlessness is in fact erroneous. The law is better enforced now than any license lav.’ has ever been. The liquor traffic Rat al ways been a law breaker and a teacher of recklessness as to the rights of others. There were actual ly more blind tigers under license than there are now under prohibi tion. —Georgia W. T. C. U. MORE DANVILLE PROOF Jacob Schrall, 432 South St., Dan ville, ill., writes; "For over eighteen • months I was a sufferer from kid ! ney and bladder trouble. During the | whole time was treated by several • doctors and tried several different I kidney pills. Seven weeks ago I commenced taking Foley's Kidney- Pills, and am feeling better every day and will be glad to tell anyone interested just what Foley’s Kidney Piils did for me.” —Sold by Summer ville Drug Co. Biliousness, Sick Headache, i Stomach, Liver, Kidney and Bowel troubles. 25c at Summerville Drug Co COST HAS INCREASED. Despite what is called a prosper ous season in this section, many newspapers, even in the small towns where there is no opposition, are sus pending publication. If the truth were known there are probably many others, even in the larger towns and cities, that are not making money and even some that are being pub lished at a loss. The reason for this is that during the last five years the cost of living for the ed itor and his family and employees, I has doubled; the cost of his mater ! ial has almost doubled; his labor ex pense nearly as much and every ex pense has been correspondingly in creased. To offset this there has 1 been no increase in the subscription price and very little advance in the ; charges for advertising and job print- \ ing. The difference between five , years ago and now has come out of the publisher’s pocket.—Tifton Ga zette. Women Suffer Agonies from Diseased Kidneys And Most Women Do This Not Knowing the Real Cause of their Condition These poor, suffering women have been led to believe that their misery of mind and body is entire ly due to "ills of their sex.” Usually the kidneys and bladder are re sponsible—or largely so. And in such cases, the kidneys and blad der are the organs, that need and must have attention. Those torturing, enervating sick headaches, dragging pains in back, groin and limbs, bloating and swell ing of the extremities, extreme nervousness or hysteria, listless ness and constant tired, worn-out feeling—are almost certain symp toms of disordered and diseased kidneys, bladder and liver. DeWitt’s Kidney and Bladder Pills have, in thousands of cases, been demonstrated as remarkably beneficial in all such conditions of female organism—affording the most prompt relief and permanent benefit. As an illustration of what these Fills will do, Mrs. P. M. Bray of Columbus, Ga., writes that she was very ill with kidney trouble, and that she is now well —and that these Pills are what cured her. They are very pleasant to take, and can in no case, produce any deleterious effects upon the system —as syrupy, alcoholic, liquid prep- NOTICE.
