IHE LIQUOR BILL IS PASSED.
Washington, D. C.—lntoxicating
liquors subject to
bill, the house Satur
day afternoon by the Vote of 240 to
65, is agreed to by the senate and
signed by the president.
The bill prohibits the interstate
shipment of liquor into dry states
for purposes of sale, but not when
shipped for private use.
This is the most far-reaching vic
tory for the prohibition workers
they have won in years, and will
make intoxicants a special class in
interstate commerce, to be treated
just as diseased meats or articles
dangerous to health are now treat
ed.
All amendments offered to the
hill were rejected. One of these
would have substituted the bill al
ready. passed by the senate, and an
other .would have added a penaliz
ing clause with fine and imprison
ment provisions, which some mem
bers declared would have 'made
the measure unconstitutional.
The bill is claimed to have many
legal defects. It carries no penal
ty for violations beyond confisca
tion, and this where
