SCARING AN ELEPHANT
Elephants are afraid of mice, ac
cording to an old legend. The con
trast is so amusing that it tickles the
funny bone and interests folks. Con
sequently, many believe it to be true.
Yet circus men say that there are
many places safer for a mouse bent
1 on bullying than within an elephant’s
i range.
But the fable lives as persistently
as another piece of fiction —that ad-
I vertised goods cost more than goods
not advertised. As in the case of the
elephant and the mouse, the truth is
the other way around.
As a matter of fact, the merchant
who advertis increased the demand
for his goods, which naturally in
creases his sales. This means each
article he sells is disposed of at 1c 1
sales expense than otherwise woulu
be possible. This in turn means he
, can sell for less.
Merchants who advertise bring
crowds < f people into their stores. The
more uixtwrs, the quicker the mer
chant’s stock is sold, and the sooner
his cash is available for reinvestment.
All this means he can afford to do
business on a smaller margin of pro
fit than the man who depends on few
er sales to pay expenses and pay a
profit.
If you want to buy economically,
patronize merchants who advertise.

EXPERT LAUDS WEEKLIES
One of the highest compliments re
cently paid the weekly newspapers of
the country comes from James O’-
Shaughnessy, executive secretary of
the American Association of Adver
tising Agencies, who declared in a
Boston address that “country week
lies are the cornerstone of American
journalism.”
“The weekly in a small town talks
to its leaders more intimately and
confidently than any other medium,”
Mr. O'Shaughnessy said.
Such a tribute from one of Amer
ica’s leading advertising authorities
is gratifying to the thousands of
country publishers, many of whom
are struggling under adverse condi
tions to faithfully serve their com
munities.
It should also impress town and
small city merchants with the fact
that the weekly newspaper offers the
most effective medium for placing his
store message before the people upon!
whom-he must depend for his busi-1
ness existence. i

SPENDING MONEY WISELY
Every family of your acquaintance
spends about 70 per cent of its income
just for living, according to economic ex
perts.
Think what this means—seven dol
lars out of every ten invested in food,
clothing, household utilities and all the
multitude of things that keep a family
happy and comfortable.
It’s a big job to spend so much money
wisely and well. It requires careful busi
ness methods to get the best possible re
turns from each dollar that leaves the
family purse.
The clever woman goes for help to
the advertising columns of her newspap
er. There she finds a directory of buying
and selling. She learns about the offer
ings of merchants. She compares values.
I She weighs quality and price. She takes
this apportunity of judging and selecting
almost anything she needs to feed, clothe,
amuse, instruct and generally bring up
her family.
Do you read T.e advertisements? You
wH find them willing and able to serve
you in the regular business of purchase.
