POISON IS FOUND
IN BOOTLEG LIQUOR
Poisons were found in all of several
hundred samples of Atlanta and north
Georgia whiskey examined recently,
but none in sufficient quantities to
produce death, directly, because of
drinking the whiskey, J. D. Allbright,
chemist of the federal prohibition
unit, recently stated.
Among the poisons found in wihs
key, both “bonded” and corn, captur
ed in Georgia, were lysol, creosote,
carbolic acid, lye, sulphuric acid and
copper and zinc metallic salts.
"N< ne were found in sufficient
quantities to kill the man drinking 1
bottle of the whiskey” Mr. Allbright
said, “but it is easy to see the condi
tion he would be in after a short time
if he drunk much of this whiskey.”
Asked to explain how the poisons
got into the whiskey, he said:
“Moonshine’s poison comes from the
stills and from the hasty distilling
me thods used while the poison in so
called imported liquors is deliberate
ly mixed to the bootleg concoction to
give it odor and kick.
“The lysol found in several sam
jl< s of Atlanta corn whiskey got there
through carelessness. The bottlers us
ed stoppers from lysol bottles, which
had absorbed so much of the disinfec-
tant that it got into the analysis, but ;
it had turned the corn whiskey to a 1
dark brown color. Bootleggers sei- I
dom take the trouble to wash bottles, I
judging from the ones examined. I
found dead flies and many kinds of
flth sticking to the bottles.
“Creosote, carbolic acid, phenol or
Wintergreen are deliberately mixed
with a base of corn whiskey when
the resourceful distiller is preparing
“impoitcd Scotch.” This gives it the
smoked Scotch flavor.
“When the moonshine is weak be
came of watering or for another rea
son lye is added to give it a bite. Very
often the man whose eyes are made
to water and who has to grab a chas
er to cool his burning throat, is fool
ed by 'his addition of lye into think
ing that be has got extra strong and
<xtra pure stuff. Many connoisseus of
corn insist on their whiskey having a
good bead that is when they shake it,
bubbles must rise. Watered whiskey
won't do this, so a beading oil, made
of sulphuric acid and olive oil, is ad
ded, giving it the required bead. This
beading oil was prevalent in the
Georgia whiskey.
"Copper find zinc salts both poi
sonous were found in almost all of
the samples coming from the unlined
copper stills and the improvised fer
metners, still and coils which are of
ten made from gasoline drums, lard
pails and galvanized garbage pails."
