Convention Nominates
Congressman Tarver
ROME, Ga., Sept. 18.—The Seventh
district democratic convention today
officially nominated Malcolm Tarver,
incumbent, as the nominee for con
gress from this district. He was un
opposed in the Sept. 9 primary.
Judge Wesley Shropshire, of Sum
merville, was named chairman to suc
ceed the late Oscar T. Peeples, of
Cartersville, and T. S. McCamy, of
Dalton, was re-elected secretary.
Mrs. Ralph Butler was renamed as
vice-chairman and resolutions were
passed deploring the death of Chair
man Peeples.
Rev. T. J. Espy Commends
Evangelist Howard Williams
The contemplated revival meeting
under the direction of Lay Evangelist
Howard S. Williams is to be com
mended. Bro. Williams is an evange
list that exposes sins, declares the
gospel in its saving power, and while
here he never lowered the high stand
ards of Christianity, in order to get
people to unite with the churches.
His methods of proclaiming the gos
pel are unique and attractive, and all
who hear him like the pure gospel
which he presents in a layman’s way.
Bro. Williams is to be commended
for his efforts to proclaim Christ to
a lost world, and I trust that the peo
ple of Summerville will support him
in this evangelistic effort with their
prayers, presence and their personal
efforts to win souls to our Lord and
Master.

TREE GROWTH.
(T. P. Hursey, District Forester.)
CONCLUSION.
Well, landowners, if you have been
reading this column, you have read
twelve short articles. They were not
designed to explain, but to call your
attention to the many ways you are
damaging yourself by being indiffer
ent to forest fires or being in favor
of burning the woods.
If you are interested in protecting
your woodland from fires you can
talk to your county agent. Ask him
to call a meeting and invite the dis
trict forester to come and tell you
about the Timber Protective organi
zation in which the government puts
up part of the money to protect pri
vate lands from fires. The larger the
area the cheaper it can be protected.
On a county-wide basis it can be
done for as little as a penny per
woodland acre per year possibly.
Which do you choose, trees or for
est fires?
Books, books, books! Such an array
of shiny-covered, snowy-paged new
books as are on hand in the office of
the county superintendent of schools!
They are the contribution of the
state of Georgia to the children who
will attend the rural schools of Chat
tooga county this year, from the first
grade through the sixth. The books
include readers, spellers, arithmetic,
and writing books. They are piled
high on long shelves which reach
nearly to the ceiling. It would be
difficult to guess how many new
books these shelves contain. A
still larger number have already been
distributed to the teachers of the
first six grades in the various city
schools of the county, for distribu
tion to the children in their classes.
The remaining ones will be given out
when the rural schools open next
month.

There are 163 families at the gov

colony in Alaska where Eugene Carr,
government official, says there is
plenty of room for other American
farmers. He thinks that at least 70
per cent, of the pioneer families will
be self-supporting after the present
harvest. He also reports that forty
six families have returned to their
homes in Minnesota, Michigan and
Wisconsin.
