REGISTRATION OF ALL U. S. WORKERS
FOR OLD-AGE PENSION BEGINS NOV. 16
Washington, Nov. 9.—The long
planned registration of 26,0C0,000
workers for old age pension accounts
under the social security act will be
gin November 16.
Making the announcement today,
the security board said 45,000 post
offices would distribute to employers
on that date a form known as the
“Employer’s Application for Identi
fication Numbers.”
Each employer will be asked how
many are in his employ, and the em
ployes in turn will begin receiving
blanks labeled “Application for So
cial Security Account Number” on
November 24.
Each employe will receive a card,
with a warning printed thereon to
preserve it because “it shows the ac
count number used in keeping records
of your social security benefit rights
under federal and state laws.”
The board urged both employers
and employes, as well as the public,
to refrain from making inquiries
either at the board or postoffices con
cerning their respective parts in the
plan until after receipt of the offi
cial forms and instructions. After
that, it was said, postal authorities
and board representatives will be
available to render all assistance nec
essary.
In the accounts, the persons eligi
ble for pensions will commence next
January 1 the storing up of pensions
which will go to them at the age of
65, in amounts depending on what
their wages have been.
The pensions are to be financed by
taxes on the pay rolls of the em
ployers and the wages of the em
ployes, which will start at 1 per cent
in January and rise gradually to 3
per cent. Among those not eligible
under the plan are farm labor, serv
ants, and government workers.
The board said the employes’ form
asks only such questions as name and
address of the applicant and his em
ployer, date and place of birth and
parents’ names. When the worker
has filled it out, he may return it
without paying postage in any one
of five ways, by handing it back to
the employer, by handing to any la
bor organization of which he is a
member, to a letter carrier or deliv
ering it to the postoffice, or address
ing it to “Postmaster, Local.”

—The United States is third in
making war preparations;
—There will be near 40,000 killed
by auto wrecks this year;
—The divorce is rising all over as
a home-breaker and ruin of children;
—Drunken men and women fill our
jails each Saturday night or holiday;
—Social disease is increasing by
500,000 each year;
—You can look about you see the
girls and boys being ruined, little
children hungry for lack of sober
fathers and mothers;
Is not the United States going
backward.
Come, let us reason together.

THE ANNUAL RED
CROSS ROLL CALL
President Franklin D. Roosevelt,
who is also president of the Ameri

issued a strong appeal to all citizens

“It is my hope that the response
to this year’s roll call will be gener

forward to still greater service and
achievements in relief of the stricken
and unfortunate everywhere,” the
president says.
President Roosevelt is also said to
have expressed the hop-? that Geor
