Fair play is what we demand of the
other fellow.
Town boosters are all right but
they can’t make a town; the job re
quires everybody’s help.
A better day will be here when a
city’s growth is not measured by
payrolls and population exclusively.
♦
The world is filled with people
who argue so much about religion
that they forget to be helpful to
others.

The price of stocks is going up but,
all the same, we suggest that people
with little sums of money keep their
money.

Ignorance costs the nation an im
mense sum every year, but this proves
very little because education costs
more.
Life, properly lived, includes rea
sonable and temperate amusement.
M. G. MERRITT. FORMER
CITIZEN, PASSES IN OCILLA
Ocilla, Ga., Dec. I.—Mr. M. G. Mer
ritt, for many years a resident of
Summerville, died at his home in
Ocilla, Friday afternoon after an ill
ness that lasted about two and one
half weeks. He was buried in the
Ocilla cemetery Sunday afternoon,
Rev. M. E. Peavy, pastor of the
Methodist church, conducting the
rites, assisted by the Rev. C. P. Wat
son, patsor of the Baptist church.
Mr. Merritt, who was above 80
years old, had been almost blind for
the last ten years, but otherwise was
in fairly good health for a man of his
age. He was violently ill from the
first and gradually grew weaker till
the end came.
He is survived by Mrs. Merritt and
two daughter, Mrs. J. J. Flanders, of
Ocilla, and Mrs. Sara Megginson, of
New York, and one son, Charles G.
Merritt, of Chattanooga.
Mr. Merritt was born in Greene
county, Georgia, as was Mrs. Merritt
and they married in that county.
They celebrated their sixtieth wed
ding anniversary in February of this
year and were the recipients of many
congratulations from all over the
state.
The deceased was a merchant in
Summerville for many years and will
be pleasantly remembered by many
of the older people of Summerville.
He was a good man and will be
greatly missed.
