KNOW YOUR TIMBER
(Emily Woodward)
Georgians are aroused as never before
over the problems that are standing in
the way of the state’s economic progress.
With this new awareness has come the
beginning of an intelligent search for
the answsers to these problems.
One of these answers lies in the state’s
vast forest resources, and in their poten
tial development. It is estimated that
through a carefully planned program of
forest management the number of people
now employed in forest products could
be increased five times. The wood-using
industries, also, are capable of addition
al expansion sufficient to absorb thou
sands of other laborers, now idle. Geor
gia's new pulp mills are already absorb
ing large units of labor. It is believed
that, five or six such mills in Georgia
could easily take care of the shrinkage of
employment in the state's cotton fields.
The major problem in bringing about
the development and expansion of Geor
gia’s forest resources is the lack of ade
quate fire protection. To quote an au
thority, “The entire future of forestry
development in the south hinges upon
the successful solution of the one prob
lem of uncontrolled forest fires.”
With 83 per cent, of all forest fires in
the nation occurring in the south and
with almost as much timber burned up
each year as the net amount grown,
Georgians can find one important an
swer to the state’s economic problem in
a united demand for adequate protection
of the state’s forests against loss by fire.
The mere business of talking about
these problems will not bring the answer.
It can only come through a well-planned
program of fire protection sponsored by
the state, and diligently carried out
Will Georgians who profess to be in
terested in the economic betterment of
the state lend their support to such a
plan ?
