GARDEN GOSSIP
(By Hubert B. Owens, Head of Depart
ment of Landscaping, Architecture,
University of Georgia.)
Recently I read an article entitled
“The Conservation of Christmas Greens"
by Clyde Hobbs Kinchelor, chairman of
conservation, Virginia Federation of Gar
den Clubs. It is an excellent article and
what is said concerning Virginia’s ever
greens is so applicable to Georgia I want
to pass part of it on.
“Virginia’s scenic beauty is one of her
chief attractions, and nothing enhances
the charm of her woodlands, mountains,
and valley more than the growth of na
tive evergreens, among the loyeliest of
which is the American Holly (Ilex Opa
ca). Anyone who has seen a Holly tree
standing ajpart, massive and symmetri
cal, knows that it is one of the noblest
of trees—as such it is sometimes cherish
ed by the occasional landholder. How
ever, on account of its glistening foilage
and bright red berries, Holly has always
ways held a high place as a decorative
feature, and as a consequence, in some
sections of the state, many valuable trees
are in danger of being ruined from indis
criminate cutting by those who do not
value on them except the little that can
be realized at Christmas season. In woods
and barren fallow fields where Hollies
grow, collectors, without discrimination
cut many trees each year, strip them of
their branches, and leaves the trunks to
rot on the ground. Beauty, that it took
Nature half a century or more to pro
duce may be destroyed in a few minutes.
“In a recent exhaustive study of the
subject of evergreens, Mrs. Kemble
White, conservation chairman, national
council of state garden clubs, says that
state foresters have assured her that the
threat of extinction of other broadleaf
varieties, such as rhododendron and lau
rel, occurs at all seasons of the year rath
er than merely at Christmas time, thus
their protection depends more on con
stant vigilance prompted by local pride
and interest. In Virginia. Nature is lav
ish in reseeding the cedar and this ever
green is still fairly plentiful. However,
the running cedar and the ground pine
are in danger of extermination.
“The marketing of Christmas greens
has become a widespread practice, but it
has been only within recent years that it
has developed into a national industry.
Now the demand in the market place
must be met by a supply of twelve mil
lion trees, the sale of which will contrib
ute twelve million dollars to the national
treasury. National forests will furnish
about 300.000 trees —cutting in these
areas is done scientifically to clear and
thin them. Another source —and the one
mainly responsible for the national poli
cy of evergreen conservation —is the sup
ply that comes from waste land where
there is a stand of evergreens or holly.

MOTION PICTURE STRESSES IMPORTANCE
OF BUYING FROM HOME FOLKS
The importance of buying from
home folks is stressed in the new
motion picture “The New South,”
now being shown throughout the
Southern states by the distributors
of Arcadian Nitrate. The picture
demonstrates vividly how the dol
lars spent at home do their work
of bringing prosperity to the South
over and over again.
“The New South” rep resents
months of work by a production
crew of experts who, after extensive
research, toured the Southern
states. All scenes in the picture
were filmed on the actual locations
The landowners are given small sums for
the privilege of harvesting the evergreens
which results in both soil depletion and
the mutilation of the trees by careless
harvesting. The tragedy is that after
Christmas many truck loads of evergreens
have to be removed and burned because
of overstocking.”

TEXT: And this gospel of the King
dom shall be preached in all the world
for a witness unto all nations; and then
shall the end come, Matt. 24 :14.
This is a very familiar text, but I want
to call your attention to this point; The
sectarian world is preaching that the
Kingdom of God is to be set up in the
future. You may travel in every nation
under the sun and you will find mission
aries representing the churches that teach
the Kingdom is to be up in the future.
But the Gospel of the Kingdom hasn’t
gone to all the world yet!
The Church of God of the Union As
sembly teaches that the Kingdom has al
ready been set up. The Bible teaches the
same!
For proof I will refer you to Dan. 2:44.
And in the days of these kings shall the
God of heaven set up a Kingdom, which
THE SUMMERVILLE NEWS: THURSDAY, JANUARY 4, 1940
depicted, there were no paid act
ors among the cast of 500; and ev
ery bit of action was natural, none
was staged.
The theme of the picture is ex
pressed by this quotation from its
script: “They opened up a wilder
ness, hill and tableland- and every
kind of soil- sandy loams and clay
loams, soils of many colors—yellow,
red and black. Every kind of 14nd
for any kind of crop, and no frost
half the year. A young land and a
great people, hardy, resourceful,
and proud—and they built an em
pire!”
shall never be destroyed : and the King
dom shall not be left to other people, but
it shall break in pieces and consume all
these Kingdoms, and it shall stand for
ever.
The sectarian world is looking for the
Kingdom to come with observation. But
let me refer you to St. Luke 17-20,21.
And when he was demanded of the Phari
sees, when the Kingdom of God should
come, he answered them and said, The
Kingdom of God eometh not with obser
vation : Neither shall they say, Lo here!
or, lo there! for behold the Kingdom of
God is within you.
The law and the prophets were until
John: since that time the Kingdom of
God is preached, and every man presseth
into it, Luke 1G :IG.
Pilate asked Jesus, Art thou the King
of the Jews? Jesus answered, My King
dom is not of this world: if my Kingdom
were of this world, then would my ser
vants fight, that I should not be deliv
ered to the Jews: but now is my King
dom not from senee, John 18 :36.
There are only two Kingdoms. One is
ihe Kingdom of darkness; the other is
the Kingdom of Ilis dear Son.
As long as we are in sin, we are in the
kingdom of darkness, but when we ac
cept the Gospel of the Kingdom, we are
delivered from the power of darkness,
and translated into the Kingdom of His
dear Son.
To establish this, I will quote for you
061. 1:13, which reads: Who hath de
livered us from the power of darkness,
and hath (hath is past tense) translated
us into the Kingdom of Ilis dear Son.
If the Kingdom of God were not already
set up, why does the Bible read as it does
in Col. 1:13?
For further proof w T e have Rom. 14 :17,
which reads: For the Kingdom of God is
not meat and drink; but righteousness,
and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
Mrs. W. M. Blackwell.
I have given enough Scripture to prove
that the Kingdom of God is already set
up. but if you will read Matt. 3:1,2 and
4:17 you will find that John the Baptist,
and also Jesus, preached the Kingdom ot
God was at hand.
Since the Kingdom of God has been
preached from the time of John the Bap
tist and every man presseth into it. lei
me ask you one question, How can men
press into the Kingdom if it doesn’t
exist ?

Letter To the Editor
LETTER WRITTEN BY CHRIST.
Dear Editor: There was a piece that
was printed in The Summerville News
Feb. 1, 1011, by a request. Will you
please print it again ? 11 reads as follows :
A letter which is said to have been
written more than two thousand years
ago fell into the hands of a fauily living
in Virginia who have kept it in their pos
session from the time they got it until
1879, it having been handed down from
father to son and so on.
This letter was written by Jesus Christ
and found under a great stone, round and
long, at the foot of the Cross eighteen
miles from Iconium, near the village call
ed Messopotania, Upon that stone was
written and engraved, ““Blessed is he
that shall turn me over.” All the people
that saw it prayed to God earnestly and
desired that He would make known to
them the meaning of this writing that
they might not attempt in vain to turn
it over. In the meantime, there came a
little children about G years old and
turned over the stone, without help, to
the admiration of all the people that
stood by. And under this stone was a let
ter and iu the letter was written the
Commandments of Jesus Christ signed by
the Angel Gabrid, ninety-nine years after
our Savior's birth.
“The letter reads as follows:
“Whosoever works on the Sabbath day
shall be cursed. 1 command you to go to
church and keep the Lord’s day holy. You
shall not idle nor misspend your time in
Bedecking yourselves in superfluities of
costly apparel and vain dressing for I
have ordered it a day of rest. I will have
he day kept holy that sins may be for
given you. You shall not only go to
church ourselves, but also your servant
and your maid-servant. Observe my words
and learn my commandments. You shall
finish your labor every Saturday at G
o’clock in the afternoon at which hour
the preparation for the Sabbath begins.
I advise you to fast five Fridays in the
year beginning on Good Friday in the
following, in rememberance of the five
bloody wounds I received for you and all
mankind. You shall diligently and peace
fully labor in your several vocations
where it hath pleased God to call you.
Ypu shall love one another and cause
them that are not baptized to come to
church and receive the holy sacrement
that is to say baptism, and the Supper of
the Lord and be made a member there
of and in so doing will give you long life
and many blessings, your land shall re
plenish and bring forth in abundance and
I will comfort you in the greatest temp
tations and surely he that doeth to the
contraryness of heart on them till I have
destroyed them, but especially on harden
ed, unrepenitent unbelievers.
He that hath a copy of this letter
written by my own hand and spoken with
my own mouth and keepeth it without
publishing it to others shall not prosper,
but he that publisheth it to others shall
be blessed of me and if their sins be as
many as there are stars in the sky. And
if they truly believe they shall be par
doned and they that believe not this my
writing and my commandments, I will
send my plagues upon you and your chil
dren, food and cattle and all other world
ly enjoyment that I have given you. Do
but once think of what I have suffered
for you; if you do, it will be well with
you both in this world and that which is
to come. Whosoever shall have a copy of
this letter and keepth it in their house,
nothing shall hurt them, neither pesti
lence, lightning nor thunder and if any
woman be in birth and put her trust in
me. she shall be delivered of her birth.
You shall hear no news of me but by
the Holy Scriptures until the day of
judgment. All goodness and prosperity
• hall be an heritage where a copy of this
letter is found.
