SCREEN STARS
The success of the screen produc
tions of “Gone With the Wind,” “The
Grapes of Wrath,” and “Rebecca”
has caused producers to vie with
each other in the purpose of other
popular novels. Among those recent
ly bought for production are “Mr.
Skeffington,” for Bette Davis;
King’s Row,” for James Cagney, Ann
Sheridan and John Garfield. Many
other stories which the public like,
are on schedule, awaiting the cam
eras.
Louis Bromfield’s unfinished novel,
“New Orleans,” has been purchased
iby Columbia in outline form for $50,-
000, as a vehicle for Jean Arthur.
Mary Martin, who won her way
into the hearts of the public into a
movie contract by her singing of “My
Heart Belongs to Daddy,” in the
Broadway play, “Leave It to Me,”
recently marridd Richard Haljiday,
film studio editor- Her next picture
will be in “Ghost Music,” with Bing
Crosby.
Constance Bennett is being sought
for the role of Amanda Smith in “No
Time for Comedy.” It’s been quite
some time now since she has been
seen on the screen.
When “The Woman With Red
Hair,” was first contemplated, Bette
Davis was assigned the lead, then it
was given to Miriam Hopkins and
now we hear that Ann Sheridan will
be “The Woman.” Ought to fit, too,
because she really has beautiful red
hair.
“Gone With the Wind” has been
boycotted by more than 700 British
theater owners, because the distribu
tors of the film, MGM, asked 70 per
cent of the theater receipts as rental
for the picture, which was a little too
high to suit the exhibitors.
Kay Francis and Walter Pidgeon
will play the leads in the picture,
“When the Daltons Rode,” with Brian
Donlevy, Andy Devine, Broderick
Crawford and Robert Stack in sup
porting roles.
Fox is said to be trying to get
Laurence Olivier to play the role of
the son and George Arliss the father
in “How Green Was My Valley,”
which they hope to produce soon.
Quite a number of the leading
actors in Hollywood are being con
sidered for the title role in the pic
turization of “The Amazing Story of
Sergeant York.” They include Gary
Cooper, Pat O’Brien, James Cagney
and Preston Foster.
In 1908 Edgar Selwyn wrote and
starred in “Pierre of the Plains,” in
a New York theater. The play was
first filmed in 1913, with Selwyn in
the lead, and was .made again five
years later. Now Metro has bought
„he film rights and plans to make it
all over again. The story deals with
the Canadian mounted police.
