Good grammar, as we get it, is
understandable language.
We are beginning to worry; our
neighbors seem to be slow in plant
ing spring gardens.
Putting off work until tomorrow
is the same as putting off profits
until next week.
The successful farmer, we have
observed, does very little farming
on the streets of the county seat.
The way some folks drive their
automobiles in Summerville you
would think we have no traffic
regulations.
Business in Chattooga County
will be on the up and up, perma
nently, when farm income is in
creased, permanently.
The art of politics seems to be the
practice of saying two things at the
same time without meaning either
one of them.
' The News strives to serve its sub
scribers and is anxious to assist you
in presenting the news that your
friends want about you and your
family. Send in the items.
ABOUT AIRPLANE ACCIDENTS
Every once in a while we hear
some anxious American express
alarm and amazement at the num
ber of pilots killed in airplane ac
cidents.
It is true that accidents have in
creased and that they are overem
phasized in the public mind by the
publicity they receive. It is well to
remember, however, that the Army
and the Navy are doing more fly
ing than ever before.
General George C. Marshall,
Chief of Staff of the Army, in dis
cussinig these accidents, cites fig
ures for the Army, showed that in
1921 there was one accident for ev
ery 214 hours of flying but that in
1940 there was one accident for ev
ery 1,941 hours. While the number
of accidents has increased about
one-third, the flying time has in
creased twelve times.

I WENT AND SAW
By THE PARSON.
I received an interesting letter
recently suggesting that I write ■
sermons instead of these scattered
remarks. There are several reasons
that I don’t write sermons. One is!
that I do not think a county paper
should be turned into a religious
journal, though I think a sermon!
now and then printed by a county
paper is not out of place. Another}
reason is that I like to write about!
people and things, and in so doing ;
one may find a
- message in each
writing. If I should
wr it e a sermon
y- \ each week. lam ;
cKw sure it would be a ;
.y repetition of what ;
* ' I |||| I would preach on
Sunday, as no man !
has the ability to?
’ preach more than ■
one sermon a
HI •Jn week. Where two
HI J|r\ sermons are
H| preached on Sun-
1 jay by the same
man, he usually preaches one new
sermon and an old one, or two i
halves of one sermon.
We had a lady speaker at the |
Methodist Men’s club the other j
night. I felt uneasy for fear that;
1 her message would not measure up,! ■
for when I saw her and she looked i;
like a girl around 18 to 20 years of
- I knew we were sunk. ’Teen-1!
age girls are sweet, pretty, attrac- h
tive, cute, and “what have you?”h
but very few of them are serious r
enough to express a thought to a .
group of business men.
I was pleasantly surprised wheni<
Miss Mettle Riddle, of Trion, for- *
merly of Sand Mountain, Ala., |«
spoke. If L could but give her speech\ *
verbatim, you would certainly read|;
an inspiring message. Miss Riddle!£
suggests that each person have an I *
aim in life, and that aim must con- I.
trol and co-ordinate the spiritual, *
physical, mental and economical •
forces in one’s life. She developed J
.each point beautifully. When in •
need of an interesting and attrac
tive speaker for any occasion, one •
will do well to invite Miss Riddle.
The Reverend T. M. Luke, the ;
pastor of the Methodist church in <
Lyerly, preached for us Sunday J
morning. Rufus Pruitt has been <
bragging on his preacher’s ability, J
but I was not so sure that Rufus •
knew what good preaching is. I
will have to admit that Rufus is a !
good judge for his pastor is a real ;
preacher. Bro. Luke did not try to !
appeal for popular applause. He ;
preached a truth that cut close in !
1 places, so close that some of the ;
members asked me if I gave Bro. <
Luke his subject. This I did not do; I
however, I was well pleased with -
his subject and the way it was !
handled. ;
A big crowd was out last Sunday !■
night to hear the sermon on “Hen-|;
pecked Husbands and Foolish
Wives.” Everything we use in these !
special sermons comes from the Bi
ble. If you have not read in the Bi
ble of any foolish wives or hen-1
pecked husbands, then don’t sayi
anything about it, or you will be,
admitting that you have not read}
your Bible, not even of the first!
man and woman. We are happy to]
have visitors at each of these]
services. Next Sunday night I will
preach on the “Secrets of Happi
ness in Married Life, or How to Be
Happy Though Married.” Four gifts
will be presented—one to the cou
ple married the longest, another to]
the couple most recently married, I
the couple with the most children]
present and to the youngest grand- ]
mother present.
