EVERGREEN AND GREENVILLE
Your “humble servant” has been
in Evergreen, Ala., several days in
ministerial work and song teaching
and drilling. I notice that this city
and Greenville —both of ’sm ‘green’
are vieing with each other about
shrubs and flowers. Editors of the
Greenville Advocate call their city
“the camellia city,” with an exhibit
of camellias at their masthead. The
editor of the Evergreen Courant
commends the Advocate for its
slogan, saying, “They have beaten
us to this slogan and more power to
them in making Greenville all that
the slogan implies, albeit we are
willing to challenge them that per
capita Evergreen has more, bigger,
older and more camellias than
Greenville.” The Courant further
says Evergreen not only has camel
lias but “a wealth of other shrubs
and flowers. Among these may be
mentioned the crepe myrtle, which
is in many respects one of the most
beautiful of our native flowering
shrubs.” They are represented by
the Courant as beginning to bloom
in June and continuing throughout
the summer and early fall months,
much longer than the camellias
bloom, and have a wide variety of
colors. So the editor suggests to
the Garden Clubs of the city that
Evergreen be named the “crepe
myrtle city” and says the editor
might be prevailed upon to carry
a “reproduction of the crepe myrtle
along with the slogan at our mast
head each week just as these Stan
ley boys are doing with camellias.”
These “green” cities (county seats
of Conecuh and Butler counties re
spectively, in above heading order)
are attractive and wide-awake, but
not more so to my vision than my
native county seat Summerville,
Ga. There are beautiful “ever
green” shrubs there, as well as the
choicest of flowers in spring, sum
mer and autumn, and the News
editor could get up an exhibit for
the masthead equal to that of the
Greenville Advocate, or the pro
posed one for the Evergreen coun
ant, yea, a collection of beauties
that would excel.
In my meditations 1 let the beau
teous attractions above represent
the eternally higher state of beauty
and glory with the Lord (beyond
this earthly imperfect existence),
where the flowers never fade, where
the tree of life ceases not to yield
her fruit and where the crystal
river of life forever flows in puri
ty. To the lovely attractions here
our natural vision must be ere long
forever closed. While in Evergreen
I am domiciled with Grady Wil
liams, nephew to Mrs. Hall, and
manager of Evers Furniture Com
pany. Monday, this week, Mr. Evers,
owner of a chain of furniture
stores, was seriously hurt when his
car struck a steel bridge and was
demolished, and his companion, Mr.
McDuffie of East Point, Ga., was
killed. Mr. Evers’ recovery is very
uncertain. Tuesday a man was
killed near Evergreen in a plane
crash. ““Look how this world has
made a change, just look how this
world has made a change; we can
see every day how the people pass'
away, look how this world has made
a change.”
Thus many people have sung be
cause of the sweet music to which
the words are set, but how few give
heed bo the warning and get ready
to "pass away!” What folly not to
blend the lovely purities here with
the perfect glories beyond and pre
pare by living, active faith and
hope in Christ for the day of pass
ing! FLAVIL HALL

THE HOLY SPIRIT INSPIRES
NEW TESTAMENT LETTERS
LESSON TEXT—Galatians 1:11, 12; I
Thessalonians 2:13; II Timothy 3:14-17; II
Peter 3:14-16; Jude 3.
GOLDEN TEXT—AII scripture is given
by inspiration of God, and is profitable for
doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for in
struction in righteousness.—ll Timothy 3:16.
Letters are usually interesting,
frequently very important, and al
ways revealing as to the character
and interests of the writer. That
is generally true of ordinary daily
mail, but how very true it is of the
letters of Scripture, the epistles of
Peter, Paul, Jude, and John. For
in them “holy men of God spake
as they were moved by the Holy
Ghost” (II Pet. 1:21).
I. The Gospel (Gal. 1:11, 12; I
Thess. 2:13).
The good news (for that is the
meaning of “gospel”) of salvation
by grace through faith in Jesus
Christ as Saviour has from the very
beginning of its proclamation been
subject to attack. Men are not con
tent to receive God’s way of salva
tion, but want to add something to
it, adjust its requirements to meet
new situations, to tinker and twist.
1. A Divine Revelation (Gal. 1:
11, 12).
Paul was not presenting some
thing which he or some other man
had “worked up,” but a message
that he had “prayed down.” Paul
was only delivering that which he
had received from God (see I Cor.
15:1-4). He was careful that it
should not be confused with or by
the teachings of men, so he “con
ferred not with flesh and blood” (see
Gal. 1:15, 16).
We too are privileged to proclaim
a divine revelation which has come
to us in the inspired Word of God.
How delightfully sweet and tremen
dously powerful is the message
which we may thus bring forth. It
has no human frailty and weakness,
no human error, and no misleading
philosophies. It does not need to
be revised every year or two. It is
God’s eternal message of redemp
tion.
2. A Message of Salvation (I
Thess. 2:13).
It works in those who believe.
Yes, it does— blessed be the name of
God! God’s Book says so, and the
experience of hundreds of thou
sands of men and women over a
period of almost 2,000 years agrees.
Note, however, that to work, the
message must not only be “re
ceived,” but also “accepted” as
the Word of God. The message of
the Bible may be received as a
matter of fact, but for salvation it
must be accepted and believed as
a matter of faith.
11. The Bible (II Tim. 3:14-17; II
Pet. 3:14-16).
Near the end of a life given in
utter sacrifice to God’s cause, Paul
, is ready to be used of the Holy
Spirit to spdak concerning the writ
ten Word.
1. It Is God-Inspired (II Tim. 3:
' 14-17).
Be sure to read this passage in
' the Authorized Version. The Re
vised has taken liberties with this
verse which the finest scholarship
does not countenance. It properly
’ reads, “All scripture is given by in
spiration of God, and is profitable
for doctrine (teaching), for reproof,
for correction, for instruction,” etc.
Other books may claim some kind
i or measure of human inspiration—
this Book is inspired of God. If
there were space, proof of the truth
■ of that statement could easily be
1 given. It is available for all who
'I want to believe it.
2. It Is Not to Be Wrested (II
■ Pet. 3:14-16).
If permitted to do so, God’s Word
will bring peace of heart, make a
1 man spotless and blameless (v. 14).
But its salvation (v. 15) is not for
those who ignorantly, or because of
- their ignorance, or because they are
not steadfast in their lives, wrest its
truth. Let us receive the Word with
. gladness, not twist it or distort its
meaning to our own destruction.
111. The Faith (Jude 3).
1. It Was “Delivered Once for
1 All.”
It is a final revelation from- God.
There is no other gospel, and there
never will be another. What assur
ance that gives us both in believing
; it and proclaiming it? But the world
hates this gospel, and attacks on it
1 are to be expected. Therefore
2. It Is to Be Earnestly Contend
ed For.
No matter how peaceable we
may be, how loving and tender
hearted, if and when attack is
made upon the Lordship of Christ,
when men make light of sin, and so
seem to minimize the vital im
portance of holiness of life—then,
however unpleasant contention and
' controversy may be to us, it is time
we cast our self-regard aside and
contend earnestly for the faith once
for all delivered to the saints.” (J.
.0. Jones). i

THE DESIRES OF
THINE HEART
(By Steve Cloud, Pastor
Menlo Baptist Church)
Life, for the Christian, does not
always run along in story-book
style. The hero is not always
crowned, the honest do not always
get rich, nor does the noble knight
invariably claim the princess and
live happily ever after; sometimes
it happens, but often it does not.
This leads weak believers to ques
tion God’s promises and live in the
doldrums because their faith i« sot
the password to every garden of
desire. They fail in business, they
get sick, they lose their dearest
ones, they plug along at some medi
ocre job, and then because their
trust in God did not pull down the
plums, they charge the Almighty
with sending them crabapples.
I know how such people feel, for
I, too, have been familiar with
tumbled castles and fading dreams.
I used to read (Psalm 37:4) “Delight,
thyself also in the Lord and He shall
| give thee the desires of thine heart,’
land I wondered how it could be
true. It did not seem to work in my
case. Mast of the things I’d craved
seemed to have gone to somebody
else. I stood in harbor and watched
| others unload the cargoes of dreams
come true, but my ships did not
come in.
Today I believe more than ever in
the promises of God. For one thing,
God has promised us that we shall
have trouble in this world. “In the
world ye shall have tribulation.”
(John 16:33). “All that will live
godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer
persecution” (2 Tim. 3:12). These
are promises just as surely as are
the assurances of good things. We
must take all the promises into our
caluclations. God has not guaran
teed to save me from the adversi-

ties common to man, but He has
written that He will keep me in the
midst of them. So, when I have
trouble, that is one promise being
kept, and when He sustains me in
trouble, He is keeping another
promise. Remember that when
Jesus said we should have tribula
tion in the world, he added, “But
be of good cheer; I have overcome
the world.”
What about the desires of mine
heart? If I delight myself in the
Lord and want a million dollars,
shall I get it? Faith in God is not
an easy path to self-satisfaction.
What is the true desire of one whose
delight is in the Lord? “Not my
