CURTAIL TRAVEL
OVER HOLIDAYS
An urgent appeal that no civilion
travel be done over the holiday sea
son except that which is absolute
ly necessary was issued today by
both the railroads of the country
and the government.
The railroads are moving approx
imately one and a quarter million
troops every month in organized
movement, not including men on
furloughs, according to P. H. Hath
ews, secretary of the Railroad As
sociation of Georgia.
“The railroads are also hauling
trucks, tanks, guns and all other
implements of war to the various
plants for construction, processing
and completion as well as moving
the completed products to the va
rious ports for shipment overseas.
This is in addition to transporting
oil formerly carried by tankers, and
people who formerly drove their
own cars.
“The railroads are doing their
best under the circumstances, but
it will be obviously impossible to
carry the. additional number of
people who might like to travel over
the holidays.
“Boys in service who have their
last opportunity to visit home, and
parents who have their last op
portunity to visit their boys, should
be given the first chance at tickets.
We hope and believe the American
public will understand the situa
tion and stay off trains during this
Christmas rush unless it is abso
lutely necessary.”
