TIPS TO THE GALS _
Be first at school with the solid
broad shoulders and the tantaliz
ing smartness of the new tucked
cardigan.
For footwear, the new and pop
ular Sandler Sportsters are ahead
in red, green and brown, but close
behind them are the saddles and
loafers. A hint for keeping those
saddles clean: put colorless nail
polish on the brown to make it
shine and keep it from rubbing off
on the white.
Don’t say sweaters— say tish-u
--knit, designed for teens. They are
classics in a class by themselves.
The Bottle Jacket suits are a fa
vorite among the gals. Mix ’em or
match ’em. They are flattering
either way.
And, pals, when rolling your hair,
roll from the roots rather than the
ends and you’ll get a lush wave as
well as a curl.

Tips on Buying Home Appliances
—Families that are planning to re
place household and other kitchen
equipment that “wore out” during
the war years should study the
needs of their individual families
and plan their buying carefully.
An electric refrigerator with nine
cubic feet of storage space which
has a large freezing compartment
for ice cubes and zero storage is a
good buy for the average family.
It is a good idea to get a model
which has shelves that pull out
and shelves that can be used in
sections.
Rust-proof metal shelving, rust
proof outside trim and one-piece
construction of the refrigerator
body should be considered in choos
ing a refrigerator. In selecting the
outside finish, you will probably
find that the porcelain finish will
cost more than a finish of syn
thetic material. The synthetic fin
ish will not chip like porcelain does.
Synthetic finishes will scratch but
the damage can be repaired more
easily than on other finishes.
Families should choose a sink
which has double basin and a
Swinging-type faucet. The type of
sink which has a double strainer
in each basin with built-in stop
pers and grease traps is a good one.
In choosing an electric stove, keep
in mind the size of the cooking
utensils to be used and get a stove
which has a top arrangement which
will accommodate these utensils.
Try to select an insulated heat
controlled stove in the size that
suits your family and your cooking
needs. Stoves with heat selector
and regulator switches for both
cooking units and the oven will
save you time and money.
It is a good idea to keep in mind
the size of the family wash when
you are selecting your washing ma
chine. Buy a machine that will take
care of eight or nine pounds of
soiled clothes at one wash. If you
have large washings, a larger ma
chine will mean fewer loads. Over
loading a small machine strains the
motor and the machinery and us
ually results in poorly washed
clothes.
There are two main types of non
automatic washing machines—the
agitator and the vacuum types.
These two types compare favorably
in efficiency.
Purchase a washing machine
that has a separate switch so the

motor can be stopped without dis
connecting the cord. Another fea
ture which should be considered is
a pump which will save the bother
of siphoning or drawing the dirty
water into buckets. This pump may
cost a little extra but it is a good
investment where there is no drain
to the floor.
In selecting your washer, be cer
tain that the wringer has a safety
release which will stop the rollers
if anything gets caught between
them. Buy your washer from a re
putable dealer who carries ma
chines made by an established man
ufacturer. Be sure the dealer will
service the machine and will live
up to any guarantees on the wash

4-H CLUB WORK
The Chattooga County 4-H Club
1946 Handbook is just off the press
and is being mailed out to all the
club members this week.
The 4-H Club Handbook was
sponsored by the County 4-H Club
Council and compiled by its offi
cers. It is to assist the club mem
bers with their 4-H projects and to
help them better the entire 4-H
Club program.
The Menlo 4-H Clubs are in the
spotlight this week. The Menlo
senior members enjoyed a weinsr
roast at the fish hatchery last
week. This activity was entirely
planned and carried out within
their own club and was most suc
cessfully done.
Seven of their club members are
working up a musical ensemble un
der the direction of Mrs. Wyatt for
the County 4-H Rally Day. They
also are trying for the place in the
State 4-H Club Follies which is to
be held in Tifton in April.
Quite a number of the Menlo club
members have already decided on
their projects for county competi
tion and are definitely working on
them—public speaking, poultry,
clothing, food preparation and fat
cattle.
