Getting Ready for the Holidays!
There are so many things we
always want to do to add that
festive touch to our home on
Christmas but we usually wait
too late to start. Let’s collect our
thoughts and begin right away.
Paint small rubber balls with
red enamel paint and attach to
branches of pine or magnolia in
interesting groupings. Hang on
the front for Christmas decora
tion. The red balls will look like
large red berries and will show
from a great distance.
Select a small branch that has
several twigs. Sharpen the twigs
and stick crabapples on the
ends. This may be used in a
Christmas arrangement with
pine or smaller twigs can be used
and the apples can be combined
with dogwood berries or haws
and used with pine in a wreath.
There are still ways to have
color and beauty in the home
through the use of material still
at hand. A home without flow
ers is like a day without sun
shine. Make the arrangement to
suit your taste.
Interesting combinations of
plant material for arrangements
can be had from geranium
blooms and foliage with cedar;
sprays of red begonia, geranium
and grapes; ivy and flowers;
large fruits and bold branches
combined in a tall vase; small
and large fruits and foliage com
bined.
On holidays, flowers add much!
to our gaiety at meal times. Ta
ble arrangements need to be at
tractive in color, shape and tex
ture. An obong or oval dish is
excellent for the low type of de
sign desirable for dining tables.
A few hints for attractive, in-!
expensive Christmas gifts are: I

Place your poinsettia gift in a

ready to bring brightness and

charcoal in the bottom of the

with lovely things growing by
the roadside and in the wood

DALE CARNEGIE
WON BY ASKING FAVOR
Did you ever try the magic of
asking somebody to do you a
favor? Yes, that is the word.
Magic!
Here is a concrete example.
Mrs. R. P. Miller, Salisbury, N.
j C., writes as follows:
‘ln 1938 I was operating a
beauty parlor in the mill village
! of Erlanger, N. C. Things were
j not going well with me and debts j
were piling up. I had reason to
believe that if I could hold on a
while longer, I could make a go
of my beauty parlor. But could
I hold on?
“One morning I got an omi
nous-looking letter, and when I
j opened it, my heart sank. It wa§l
j worse than I thought. A letter
from the company saying that
! the rent on my office was to be
increased 50 per cent. I was
stunned. Flabbergasted. It meant
I would lose my business!
“My first thought was to go toi
! the man who had charge of this
matter and give him a good stiff
argument about the raise in the
rent. But the mill company own
ed the whole town; I could move ■
to no other place. Then I re
membered what you once wrote
in your column ‘no one ever
won an argument.’ After think
| ing it over, I remembered some
! thing else from your column: “If i
! you want to make a friend, ask
j a person to do you a favor. He
will consider it a compliment
and will, probably, do what you
ask cheerfully and with a feel-
; ing of importance.’
■ “I decided I would give the 1
idea a very practical workout. ■
So I wrote the manager of the
mill company, stating that I
wanted to ask his advice.
“The next morning I sot a tel
ephone call from Mrs. Charles
Davis, general manager of the
mill, telling me that since I had
been so prompt with my pay
ments that I could stay on at
the same rate, and pay more
when I was able, tl was the turn
ing point in my business career.'
I was able to save my business.”
So Thoughtless
“Why are you so bitter against
your Uncle Nebuchadnezzar?”
“He lost all his money right
after we named the baby for
him.”
