GETS SILVER AFTER 44 YEARS
SAN FRANCISCO.—A 94-year
old woman, smiling sweetly, en
tered the jewelry store of which
Frank McAuliffe was a salesman
and said she would like to pick
up a silver gravy boat she had
left to be cleaned, because her
sister would be angry if she
didnt get it pretty soon. The
salesman asked when she had
left it and the lady replied, “In
1902.” McAuliife found it for her
—in the basement.

PASSWORDS TO NEW, DELIGHTFUL ENTERTAINMENT ON THE AIR
DECEMBER FIFTEENTH
When you think of radio entertainment, do you ever
stop to consider all the activity behind the sounds
coming from your radio loudspeaker! Ihe voice or
music is perhaps all that you are actually aware of
. . . or maybe you go so far as to remember that
somewhere around there is a “mike” and an announc
er who will speak as soon as the program is over. But,
behind the scenes, there is hustling, bustling activity.
Control room in the station filled with countless tubes,
switches, patchboards, wires and turntables. A trans
mittee and tow;er . . . picking up sounds . . . re-in
forcing them and sending over thousands of miles of
air waves to you.
Yet, before all this can be, there is first the idea born
of another radio station to serve you. The idea grows
with a local survey of your opinion of a possible sta
tion. You like the idea, and it spreads to letters, calls
and trips to Washington which result in filling forms,
filing applications, and securing the approval of
Washington authorities. Then, day after day, week
after week, month after month, there is anxious wait
ing for the license to be granted. -When that day
comes, there are eager and frantic calls to radio equip
ment companies. Orders for necessary equipment are
placed. Some are filled. Others are delayed. The hum
of hammers and voices mingles with long-distance
calls, the unloading of wood and strange-looking
things called condensers, broadcast consoles, and in-
