All Supreme Court
Justices Serving By
Vote of People
None of the seven justices of
the Georgia Supreme Court were
on the bench last week through
gubernatorial appointment. All
were serving in the high tribunal
by virtue of having been elected
by the people. The decision,
therefore, which ruled Herman
Talmadge’s claim to the gover
norship illegal, can be considered
an act of the voters of the state.
From five justices who con
curred in the opinion were Pre
siding Justice William Henry
Duckworth, of Blairsville; Asso
ciate Justice R.jC. Bell, of Thom
asville; Associate Justice William
Y. Atkinson, of Newnan; Asso
ciate Justice Lee B. Wyatt, of
LaGrange, and Associate Justice
T. Grady Head, of Ringgold.
One of the dissenters, Asso
ciate Justice Tom S. Candler, of
Blairsville, stated in his opinion
the question was “not justifia
ble”—that it did not come within
the jurisdiction of the court.
That left the only lengthy dis
senting opinion to one man—
Chief Justice William F. Jenkins,
of Eatonton.
Etiquette
Asked by his teacher what was
the meaning of “etiquette,” a
little boy replied: “Etiquette is
the noise you mustn’t eat with
when there’s company.”

Aided Millions in
World Conflict
Although fighting stopped
more than 18 months ago, the
International Red Cross Com
mittee, which is charged with
watching over the welfare of the
sick and wounded as well as ol
men taken prisoners in wartime :
still is faced with multitudinous ■
tasks as it seeks to meet the ur- j
gent needs of a postwar world.,
Much of the committee’s work
today concerns prisoners of war i
and displaced persons of which
there are still millions. Among
the IRCC's most important war
time accomplishments were:
1. Establishing a 27,000,000 al-,
phabetical card index for its j
Central Prisoners of War Agency.
2. Handling 23,583,000 messages
between civilians living in en
emy countries who were other
wise unable to contact their j
next of kin.
3. Handling 547,063 telegrams.
4. Dispatching 942,500 inquiries'
enabling next of kin to check on
welfare of members of armed
forces.
5. V’siting 4.450 prisoners of j
war and civilian internee camps,
thus establishing contact with
about 8,000,000 POW’s and Cl’s. 1
6. Dispatching 6,600.000 letters,
plus many thousands of parcels;
also transmitting cash remit
tances amounting to 48,831,350
francs.
7. Forwarding 431,862 tons of)
relief parcels valued at 3,315,-1
000,000 francs.
Recognition of the splendid
wartime achievements of the In

during the past summer, when
delegates representing more
than 50 nations met to consider j
revisions of certain provisions I
of the Geneva convention in the :
