Thompson Promises
In a brief, concisely worded
speech before a joint session of
the Legislature last Thursday,
Gov. M. E. Thompson key-noted
his new administration with the
promise to retain the 50 per cent
salary increase for school teach
ers.
“It will be my purpose,” he
said, “first to see that the teach
ers receive the increased salaries
promised them, even if other
state services have to be cur
tailed.”
The general assembly listened
attentively and stoutly applaud
ed the new chief executive as he
declared, dramatically, "Today,
again, law and order prevail In
Georgia! ”
Gov. Thompson then pledged
continued support of the plat
form of the Democratic party as
it was drafted in Macon last Oc
tober, including the white pri
mary. He observed, however, that
the people who wrote the plat
form believed in a white pri
mary “that would work.”
“I am for a white primary,”
he said, “but I am not for any
measure or legislation that would
strike out every primary election
law from the statutes of our
state and allow fraud and stolen
elections to run rampant in the
state of Georgia.”
The new governor cited the ex
panded state services which the
party platform called for and
which, he said, were “long over
due.” Besides the increase in
teachers’ pay, he listed as solemn
obligations, the relief of over
crowded conditions in the Uni
versity System, the expansion of
health and hospital facilities, in
creased benefits to the aged, the
blind and dependent and crip
pled children and better farm
to-market roads for farmers.
