SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON
THE RISEN CHRIST AND HIS
DISCIPLES
International Sunday School
Lesson for April 6, 1947
Golden Text: “Now hath
Christ been raised from the
dead, the first-fruits of them
that are asleep.”—l Cor. 15: 20.
Lesson Text: John 20: 19-
30; 21: 15-17.
Having been arrested in the
Garden of Gethsemane late on
Thursday night, falsely accused,
convicted and humiliated early
Friday morning, and, finally es
corted to Golothia where he was
crucified between two thieves, I
Jesus lay in the tomb where he
had been placed by Nicodemus
and Joseph of Arinthea from Fri
day afternoon, throughout the
Jewish Sabbath, until his resur
rection early on the first day of
the ■week, called by us, Sunday.
After scattering upon his ar
rest, the disciples of Jesus had
reassembled alter His death.
Their spirit was anxious and pes
simistic, although the mere fact
of their being united seems to
point to some fidelity of purpose
or of hopes. A group of women,
who went to the tomb early on
the first day of the week, found
the body of Jesus gone, but it was
to Mary of Magdala that Jesus
made His first appearance.
Some interesting sidelights of
this appearance should be noted.
It seemed strange that the first
appearance of the resurrected
Lord should have been made to
a woman rather than to some
great leader or prominent per
sonage.
Again the fact that these wom
en were wondering how they
would be able to gain entrance
into the tomb shows that the
body of Jesus had not been stol
en by His own followers as the
soldiers claimed. The condition
of the grave clothes also nega
tives any theft. At first, Mary
did not recognize Jesus, but
shortly afterwards, the intona
tion of His voice brought recog
nition and Mary rushed back to
the disciples to exclaim, “I have
seen the Lord.”
Jesus made many other ap
pearances during the 40 days be
tween His resurrection and as
cension. He appeared to the
other women who were with
Mary and, somewhat later, to
Peter. In the afternoon he ex-

plained the Old Testament pro
phecies concerning Himself to
Cleopas and another as they
walked to Emmaus. Later that
evening, He entered the upper
room supernaturally and re
vealed Himself to a group of dis
ciples, including all of the Eleven,
excepting Thomas. Because of
the latter’s doubt that they had
seen Him. Jesus appeared again
one week later.,
To seven disciples beside the
Sea of Galilee, Jesus appeared, as
well as to the 11 apostles on a
mountain. On one occasion, by
arrangements, He appeared to
more than 500 of His followers in
Galilee. He also made an indi
vidual appearance to James and,
finally, the 11 apostles when
He gave them His final instruc
tions.
The authenticity of the Chris
tian faith stands or falls on the
reality of the resurrection. The
written record in the gospels car
ries conviction but there are oth
er facts even more conducive to
faith.
The fact that the Christians
soon changed from the tradition
al Jewish day of worship to the
first day of the week in recogni
tion of some great occasion to be
commemorated is important. The
transformation in the conduct of
His disciples from discouraged,
disappointed men testified elo
quently of faith and confidence.
Peter, who denied Jesus three
times in terror, faced the oppo
sition of the Scribes and Phari
sees and courageously, preached
the Pentecost winning thousands
of believers. Also, Paul, after his
vision of the resurrected Christ,
changed from a persecutor to an
expounder of the new faith.
A personal faith in immortali
ty is the strongest possible in
centive for living properly. “The
business of loving or hating, of
being pure or impure, of spread
ing peace or weaving bitterness
into the fabric of life,” says Ru
fus M. Jones, “is eternal busi
ness, for all the time as one acts,
one is forming the atmosphere in
’which he is going to live eternal
ly .. . This life and the life be
yond are not two things but one,
or at least parts of one whole.”
With th's lesson, we conclude
our study of the Gospel of John.
We are wondering if the past

SUCCESSFUL
PARENTHOOD
By CATHERINE C. EDWARDS, '
IT IS no doubt true that hus-’
bands expect too much in the
way of madonna perfection when l
their wives become mothers. But)
don’t you think women owe them
some of their illusions?
True, being a mother doesn’t
make it any easier to get up at
2 o’clock on a cold night to give
the baby his feeding. You’re just
as sleepy and just as shivery as
any human would be. But since
it has to be done, wouldn’t it be
just as well not to show your
unsaintly resentment? Grumb
ling won’t make the trek from
bedroom to kitchen to nursery a
bit shorter or warmer!
Then, it’s hard for a husband
to understand why you don’t
seem just as proud and exhilirat
ed over parenthood as he is. Os
course you are, but the job of
fitting the care of a new baby
into an already full housekeep
ing schedule sometimes brings
more furrows to your brow than
smiles to your lips. Stop and
think about this a bit and try to
show your happiness. One of a[
man’s fondest dreams, perhaps a |
memory of his own childhood, is
that of a happy mother, laughing
and playing with her children.
Don’t cheat your husband of this ;
just because you’re tired. Don’t
cheat the baby either of a smil
ing mother, for on these first
impressions of welcome depends |
a lot of his future stability.
Then there’s the important I
matter of keeping your good
looks. Post-natal exercises pre-
I scribed by your doctor and done
[regularly (violent spurts of ex-1
; ercising do more harm than
! good i will bring back your fig
! ure. A diet planned to meet the
i basic nutritional requirements
i (don’t fill up on sandwiches and
sweets) will give you vigor and a
good clear skin. Brushing your
hair twice a day will enable you
, to space your shampoos farther
I apart and keep your hair gleam
(ing besides. And learning to put
nail polish on skillfully gives you
a gay evening cover-up for the
inevitable wear and tear on nails
during these weeks of extra)
washing. Taking time to keep |
up your grooming actually pays)
off in more work done, for a)
feeling of self-respect makes ac-)
complishment easier.
But if you are one of those)
) persons who really can’t budget I
time—and there are plenty of us
who are incapable of measuring
minutes —then call on your hus-
I band to help you plan your day.
I can see you bridle at that—
no man is going to tell me how
to do my work! But if your hus
band couldn’t manage money—
if it slipped through his fingers
and his only accounting of the
1 $lO he had in his pocket was “I
i guess I must have lost it”—then
wouldn’t you leel he should let
you help manage the family fi-
I nances? Men are usually better
I than women at straightening out
; traffic jams in work—admit this
and ask your husband to study
the problem with you. In his
pleasure at being called on to ad
vise he’ll also gain more under
standing of the demands a house
achieved the purpose of John,
stated in the 20th chapter of his
gospel, in Verses 30 and 31, in
) which he states that, while he
I did not record all of the doings
of Christ. “These things are writ
ten that ye may believe that
Jesus is the Christ, the Son of
God, and that believing ye may
have life in His name,” for, “as.
many as received him, to them
gave He the rght to become the
children of God, even to them
that believe on His name.”

THE LAMP AND THE OIL
; We are taking our text from
Metthew 25: 3. They that were
foolish took their lamps and took
no oil. Yes, friends, we are look
ing into a scene, the lamp and
the oil. Which is worth most? We
know they work good together,
but when they are separated,
how can they give light?
We will use your outwordly
appearance so ra lamp and the
inwardly filling for the oil. Can
you be the light of the world
without the oil? You may trim
the wick and polish the lamp
and make it clean from the out
side, but did you install the oil
inside? That is to say, you can
look clean in person and meet
the world with a smile and then
b ewithout light.
To have oil is to have the spir
it of grace and truth which came
by Jesus Christ. The lamp that
is worthwhile is the lamp that
that has oil; it is the lamp that
will be burning when Jesus
comes back.
You may polish the old lamp
and run up the wick and touch
it with a blaze, but without the

oil the old cotton wick will smoke

fill the room with a bad odor and
will finally rum to ashes. So it
is with a man who is without the
spirit of grace. He is the lamp
without oil; he is a vessel but un

walk in darkness without light,
and will perish with the ungod
