Farm Notes
PRICES
Prices received by farmers
continue downward from the
record high of 280 (1909-14-1001
reached in mid-March. The in
dex was 276 on April 15 and 272
on May 15. Prices of most meat
animals, dairy products, and
nearly all oil-bearing crops were
lower in May than in April. Most
truck crop prices also were low
er, but the decline was less than
usual for this time of year. Grain
prices did not change much be
tween April and May. Cotton
prices to growers, however, con
tinued a rise that began in Jan
uary. Prices paid by farmers, in
cluding interest and taxes, de
clined one point to 229 (1910-14-
100) in May from the record level
of 230 in April. This was the first
break in the rise which began
last September. Prices of ferti
lizers, machinery, and other in
dustrial products bought by the
farmers changed little between
April and May. Prospects are for
only a moderate reduction in the
index of prices paid in the next
few months.
LIVESTOCK AND MEATS
Meat animal prices declined
substantially in April and early
May from the peaks of February
and early March, when they were
about 60 per cent higher than a
earlier. Hog prices dropped
more than $6 per 100 pounds in
March and April. Slaughter cat
tle prices declined less than hog
prices. Lamb prices also declined
only a little. Prices of meat ani
mals nevertheless, are high com
pared with previous years,. On
May 15, they averaged 40 per cent
above the ceilings of May, 1946.
Demand for meat has been very
strong. Despite record prices,
consumption of meat per person
in early 1947 was the greatest for
the period in at least 35 years.
Consumption for the year is like
ly to set a new record. Prices also
are expected to average higher
than for any previous year. Hog
prices are likely to hold close to
early May levels through sum
mer, but to decline more than
usual when marketings become
large in the fall and early win
ter. Normal seasonal declines in

DAIRY PRODUCTS
Prices farmers received for
milk sold at wholesale and for
butterfat have fallen during the
last several months. Early in the
year they dropped sharply, but
more recently they have changed
at about the normal rate for the
spring season of heavy milk
flow. Prices of milk and dairy
products are not likely to regain
the high levels of the fall of 1946.
This prospect applies to prices of
milk to farmers, of butterfat, of
fluid milk, butter, Cheddar
cheese, evaporated milk and ice
cream.
Farmers that haven’t turned
in for refund on their tractor
used gas on the farm this spring
should turn it in immediately,
because the state won’t make the
refund for the tickets that are
over six months old. We will be
glad to help any farmer fix up
for his refund if he will come by
the county agent’s office.
Extension News
Have the clothes stored away
for the summer been completely
forgotten? Warm damp, summer
days are the days mildew does its
heaviest work. Prevention is of
primary importance. Keep the
storage area dry so that mildew
does not have an opportunity to
develop.
Dry articles before putting in
soiled clothes hamper. Hang
wash clothes to dry and spread
shower curtains in the bathroom.
Keep things aired. Ventilate
the house on days the air is cool
er and drier outside than inside.
Jars of calcium chloride, a
chemical that takes up moisture,
should be placed in closets or
storage space. Replace when the
solid calcium becomes liquid.
Store articles clean. Soiled
clothing and household fabrics
are much more likely to mildew
than clean ones.
Articles can be treated for mil
dew resistance at home by us
ing soap and cadmium chloride.
Cloth to be treated should be
dipped in hot suds made of soft
water and a good natural soap.
Soak for a few minutes to make
sure that the goods are wet
through. Upon removing and
without rinsing, place in a solu
tion of one and one-half ounces
of cadmium chloride to a gallon
of water.
The fabric should be heated
in this bath for about 15 min
utes. Stir and tiyn all the time.
Then wring the fabric out and
hang to dry on a twine clothes
line. Wire lines stain the treated
fabrics. Be sure to have plenty
of soap in the fabric because it
is the soap-cadmimum combina
tion that makes the garment
mildew-resistant.
Copper sulphate may also be
used with soap, but the cadmium
chloride treatment is more sat
isfactory. Both substances are
poisonous, and both treatments
withstand two or three launder
ings.
