Fann Bureau Notes
Cotton in Chattooga County
has been seriously threatened in
the past two weeks by an un
identified disease. The county
agent recently called the experi- |
ment station and state offices
in an effort to identify the di
sease and find methods to con
trol it.
Although some of the cotton
has been killed by thrip and flea
hopper damage, Dr. J. H. Miller,
of the University of Georgia, re
ported that most of the cotton
has been killed by a fungus. This
fungus produces small spots on
the stalks, stems, and petioles.,
The leaves die and, in many
cases, the whole stalk dies. The
disease spores are spread by the
wind, rain and insects.
County Agent J. B. Butler stat
ed that treatment for this in
sect, which is microscopic and is
called tripe, should be dusting
with a solution of 5 per cent DDT
in a sulphur base. He recom
mends 10 to 15 pounds an acre.
-This insect has been present
in Georgia for a long time, but
has never been as serious as it
has been this year, it is partic
ularly serious in this section of
the state.
County Agent Butler express
ed a belief that hot weather
would help rid local farmers of
this fungus.
Further information on meth
ods of prevention of tripe will be
released as soon as possible
Samples of the afflicted cotton
are now being studied by state
officers.
USES GLOVES FOR BANK
NEW YORK—Mrs. Sarah Ten
ner has found an even safer
place for her money than the
top of her stocking. She stuffed
$1,410 in bills into the fingers
of her black gloves and carried
them in her handbag. When
three boys snatched the bag, they
apparently threw it away after a
superficial search. The bag, con
taining the gloves and the mon
ey, was found by police in a park.

Whitlow Wyatt Defeats Tubize in Locals’
First Northwest Georgia Textile Game
Behind the fine pitching of
Whitlow Wyatt, the Legionnaires
| romped to a 7-4 victory Sunday
j over the third-place Celanese
earn, formerly the Tubize Ray
ons. Wyatt gave up only five hits .
in six innings on the mound, as
he hurled in his first game since
leaving the National League in
1945. The former Brooklyn Dodg
er struck out eight men before
he was succeeded on the mound
by Buddy Byars in the seventh
Byars gave up three hits and
me run in the last three innings
This was the first Textile
League game for Summerville
since last week’s games sched
uled with Pepperell were rained
out. The Legionnaires looked like
a close contender for the pen
j nant in their debut.
In the Sunday game, played at
Tubize, the Celanese nine gath
ered a total of 15 hits from three
Summerville moundsmen to win
a shut-out, 11-0. John Nelson,
who played with Brighton earlier
this season, was the losing pitch
er, being relieved in the first by
Byars, with the score already
4-0. Byars, who had pitched
three innings the day before, was
replaced in the eighth by Jim
Moseley. Walt Little was credit
ed with the win, holding the
Legionnaires to five hits. Baker,
of Celanese, got four hits for
five trips to the plate to pace
the winners.
The home team will meet
Brighton in a game Saturday at
Shannon. A return game will be
played Sunday at Legion Field,
iwith Whitlow Wyatt again on
the mound for Summerville.
Starting time is to be 3:15.

House and Home
Have you had the gauge on
your pressure canner checked
this year? Remember that this
should be done each season to
insure accuracy of the pounds
of pressure. In some cities the
gas company offers this service
so find out where you get it and
don’t delay.
There is new timing for home
canning of non-acid vegetables
Research by the Bureau of Hu
man Nutrition and Home Eco
nomics of the USDA proved that
time can be reduced in process
ing some non-acid vegetables,
but must be increased in others
Asparagus is one of the vegeta
bles which needs an increased
length of time in processing. The
time has been increased to 25
minutes for pint glass jars and
55 minutes for quart jars. The
pressure remains the same ten
pounds.
Always use young, tender
vegetables and can them quick
ly while fresh. Tough, overma
ture vegetables will'result in a
finished product that is poor in
flavor and quality. It is neces
sary to process over-mature veg
tables longer in order to have
any assurance that they will not
spoil. The change that takes j
place in vegetables from the time j
they are gathei cd to the time j
they are canned impairs both
flavor and keeping qualities.
It is important to wash all
foods thoroughly since the bac
teria most difficult to kill comes
from the soil. If dirt finds its
way into the jar of food it is al
most certain to cause the food
to spoil later. Always lift the
fruit or vegetable out of the wa
ter in which it has been washed.
If the water is poured off, par
ticles of dirt still remain in the
pan with the food. It takes run
ning water or many changes of
water to be sure vegetables are
free from all traces of soil. Vege
tables be washed before
they are peeled or their skins
broken.
These conditions of quality,
freshness and cleanliness apply
to vegetables that are to be fro
zen just as they do to vegetables
that are to be canned.
Mountain-Top Tower
.4 s Peace Memorial
To FDR is Proposed
A $2,000,000 memorial tower to
' Franklin Delano Roosevelt was
proposed last week during the
| ceremonies at Warm Springs,
which turned the Little White
House into a national shrine.
Ivan Allen, Sr„ chairman of the
Roosevelt Warm Springs Memo
rial Commission, suggested that
this peace tower be erected atop
Pine Mountain with funds con
tributed by the 48 states and all
the nations of the world.
Allen proposed that the tower
be equipped with “radio, tele
vision, chimes and modern ele
vators” and be used to originate
broadcasts of messages of hope
and peace and inspiration. He
said the idea had the indorse
ment of Acting Gov. Thompson
and awaited, now, merely • the
impetus of an organized cam
paign.
