American Legion Auxiliary
Met Tuesday Night
Mrs. James Hawkins led the
program at a meeting of the
American Legion auxiliary at the
Legion hall Tuesday night. After
the meeting the members enjoy

Music Schola’shivs
Open to Talented
The National Federation of
Music Clubs announces auditions
for a scholarship offered by Paul
I Lavalle, eminent conductor,
i which is open to native-born
Americans between the ages of
16 and 25 (27 if a veteran). The
scholarship will be SI,OOO and is
! to be expended over a two-year
period for study only. It is to
I be made available to some wor
thy student, contemplating a
I professional career, who could
I not otherwise adequately finance
his musical education. The win
ner of the scholarship is privil
edged to choose the school or
teacher with whom he will study.
Auditions will be held in Geor
gia before April 15, the exact
time to be announced later. The
i state winner w>ll be given the
opportunity of entering the dis
trict auditions. The national
| winner will have the honor of
appearing as soloist on a na
tional network under the baton
of Paul Lavalle. Mr. Lavalle has
requested that the entrants be
judged not only on performance
but on the general intelligence,
musicianship and the potential
talent evidenced by the candi
date’s performance.
Young artists interested in the
Lavalle scholarship and desir
ing further information should
address their inquiries to Wilbur

TO MUSIC STUDY CLUB
The Summerville Music Study
club met at the home of Mrs.
Harry R. Foster for the February
meeting.
The meeting was opened with
the club collect given in unison.
A very interesting program
was given by Mrs. Duke Espy on
“Russian Opera.” Mrs. John D.
Bankson sang “Song of India”
from Sadko by Rimsky-Korsakov.

i to the Sun” from “Le Cog d’Or”
; by Rumsky-Korsakov. A record

The business meeting was led

Mrs. H M. McWhorter gave a
review of the club ratings. The
club assured of 91 points this
year and possibly 96.
Mrs. O. L. decider, chairman
of the year’s study committee re
ported that books had been or
dered for the next study project.
The club is going to take up the
world history of the “Ballet.”
Mrs. John D. Taylor reported
that excerpts of 30 operas would
be presented over the Rome radio
station.
Mrs. T. W. Elder, chairman for
music week, gave plans made by
the committee.
Mrs. C. O. 'Walker announced
April 1, as the deadline for the
state music composition contest
sponsored by the Georgia Fed
eration of Music Clubs.
Mrs. Smith gave the treasurer’s
report.
A nominating committee was
appointed to select officers for
next year. They were: Mrs. E. P.
Lunsford, chairman; Mrs. H. M.
McWhorter and Mrs. J. D. Bank
son.
During the social hour a de
licious salad plate was served.
Mrs. A. J. Eilenburg spent
Tuesday afternoon with her
I mother, Mrs. W. E. Bynum, at

Two hundred, forty-two cattle,
23 hogs, three sheep and one
mule were sold and bought at
! the Coosa Valley Livestock sales
at Rome on Wednesday, Feb. 11.
Total sales were $16,615.88 and 32

”Beaux Night” Held
By Jr. Woman’s Club
The February meeting of the
Summerville Junior Woman’s
club was in the form of its an
nual “Beaux Night,” held Friday
evening at the Riegeldale tavern.
The traditional alentine colors
of red and white were artistical
ly carried out in place card
programs, tulips on the main ta
ble and red balloons in clusters
over the dining room.
After a special song by the
group, Mrs. J. R. Burgess, presi
dent, graciously introduced the
guests. She announced that
