What will the future hold for this young war
widow and her fatherless son? Will all the
widows and orphans oi our military dead re
ceive the care and protection they have every
right to expect from a grateful nation?
What would our war dead ask of us if they
could speak? Would they have need to remind
us of our promises? Would they ask us to recall
our pledges of everlasting gratitude? Would
they question the sincerity of our avowals to
remember their sacrifices?
This appeal speaks for the members of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.
We count it a privilege to help care for the
widows and orphans, and for the country s
disabled veterans —the comrades with whom
we served on foreign soil or in hostile waters.
In offering the American people the oppor
tunity to buy Buddy Poppies, we are giving our
fellow citizens the honor of sharing a solemn
obligation. The debt this country will always
owe to its war disabled—and to the widows
and orphans of its honored dead —belongs to
all of us. It's a debt our people can never pay
in full but one that will always have first claim
upon our sense of honor.

Whereas, said note has become

Buddy Poppies are fashioned by disabled
veterans in government hospitals. The sale of
these symbolic flowers —by voluntary workers
enables us to do those things for the aid and
comfort of widows and orphans, and disabled
and needy veterans, that civic, state or federal
agencies lack the power—or the human touch
—to accomplish.
Remember this important fact. The proceeds
of the annual sale of Buddy Poppies are de
voted exclusively to the welfare needs of vet
erans and their dependents. Your dime —or
your dollar —will help make possible the type
of service for which there is no substitute —a
service that is bom of sincere, personal interest
in the well-being of those whose lives have
been so painfully disrupted by the circum
stances of war.
The men who sleep in war dead graves ask
nothing for themselves—least of all—our tears.
But their souls will know no peace if we dare
betray their faith in our loyalty to their loved
ones —and their disabled comrades.
Buy a Buddy Poppy. Gain for yourself the
satisfaction of knowing that you have not
passed up the chance to “Honor the Dead by
Helping the Living."
