LETTER TO THE EDITOR
DRUNKEN, BUT NOT WITH
LITERAL INTOXICANTS
The Apostle Peter gives ad
monition as follows: “But the
end of all things is at hand. Be
ye therefore of sound mind and
be sober in the prayers” (I Pet.
4:7) The Bible says much about
the destructive effects of drink
ing literal intoxicants, but also
teaches that many are drunk on
sensual pleasure and spiritual
blindness when not drinking lit
eral wine or its equivalent in ef
fect.
To the disobedient, rebellious
Jews, Jehovah said, "Tarry ye
and wonder; take your pleasure
and be blind; they are drunken,
but not with wine; they struggle,
but not with strong drink” (Isa.
29: 9).
Sensual souls for whom God’s!
revelation and His saving grace |
has no attraction are not sober.
They are not of sound mind. By
the mercies of God, Paul ad- !
monishes: “Present your bodies a ;
living sacrifice, holy, acceptable, I
unto God, which is your rational,'
sacred service” (Rom. 12:1).
Paul, in the Greek language here
wrot-e the words, logiken and
latreian. The former in the New
Testament Lexicons is defined
“rational,” and the latter in
Thayer is defined: "To perform
sacred services, to offer gifts, to
worship God in the observance of
the rights instituted for his wor
ship.” So the above translation
of this passage cannot be faulty.
He who does not thus present his I
body, in heart service, to God is
not rational, is not of sober mind
and is drunk mentally, but not
always “on wine.”
As a reason for his admoni-

tion, Peter says: “The end of all
things is at hand.” With all to
whom he was writing, their
earthly life would soon be over,
and in this sense the end of all
things, as to material existence,
was approaching. But evidently
his words have meanings beyond
this.
Peter is called the apostle to
the Hebrews, Paul to the Gen
tiles. The observances under the
Mosaical law by the Hebrews
were in “decay,” had “waxed
old” and were “ready to vanish
away” (Heb. 8:13). Jerusalem,
with the Jewish temple and its
worship were soon to be destroy
ed by the Roman army. Hence
the Hebrew Christians were ad
monished in the epistle to them
I to not forsake the assembling of
I themselves together to exhort
one another (Heb. 10:25), since
the day of said destruction was
seen to be approaching, Jesus at
length having foretold it in
Matt. 24, Mark 13, Luke 21, and
given instructions about escap
ing therefrom.
Church historians, including
the eminent Mosheim, tell us
that the Christians did leave the
city and escaped the terrible ca
lamities. Jesus seems to make
that destruction typical of His
second coming, and our intro
ductory text reaches down to
this approaching day is the ap
plied lesson for us. Hence after
telling of the treading down of
Jerusalem by the Gentiles until
their times be fulfilled (Luke 21:
24), Jesus foretells signs of his
coming-in sun, moon and stars,
‘distress of nations, with perplex
ity,” the “sea and the waves
roaring,” the “failing of men’s
hearts for fear and for looking
after those things which are
coming upon the earth.” Hence
the admonition of verse 36:
“Watch ye therefore, and pray
always that ye may be account
ed worthy to escape all these
things that shall come to pass,
and to stand before the Son of
Man.”
To the faithful Philadelphia
Church, and to all truly conse
crated ones, assurance was given j
of this being kept “from the
hour of trial, that shall come
upon all the world.” Are not the
times more portentious than ever
before, and should such not in
duce us to be sober and ready for
this impending trial?

ANNUAL MEETING OF THE FIRST CHURCH
OF CHRIST, SCIENTIST, BOSTON, JUNE 7
BOSTON, Mass., June 7.—De
claring that democratic govern
ment is the instrument through
which an irresistible, spiritual
force is being channeled into the
affairs of men, the Christian Sci
ence Board of Directors today
urged Christian Scientists, in an
nual meeting, here, to work
strongly and actively for the de
fen s e of free governments
throughout the world.
Rightly conceived, the direc
! tors told the annual meeting of
I The Mother Church, The First
i Church of Christ, Scientist, in
■ Boston, Mass., democratic gov-
I ernment is something more than
an aggregation of legislative acts
and legalized rules of conduct.
“It is the orderly unfoldment
of the moral character and spir
itua lintegrity of its citizens,” the
spokesman for the world-wide
Chirstian Science movement af
firmed. As such, they said, free
government rightly merits active
defense of its sacred purpose, in
addition to the pious declara
tions of allegiance to its outer
form.
Thousands of Christian Scien
tists from many parts of the
world heard the directors issue a
distinct challenge to the proud,
boastful “Goliaths of today, as
they go to and fro in the earth.
Denying God, they are denying
their own life, for God is the only
-life of man,” they stated.
In free governments, now se
riously endangered by the mod
ern Goliaths, the directors com
mented, there is a force that
OFFICIAL WELCOME
EXTENDED VISITORS
Georgia’s all-out campaign to
capture the tourist dollar is gain
ing momentum.
For example, another step to
“sell Georgia” to out-of-state
visitors was taken the other day
when the state’s first “tourist aid
station” formally was opened by
Georgia’s Agricultural and In
dustrial Development Board and
the State Highway Patrol and
the State Highway Patrol, co
sponsors of the new service to
motorists.
The first station was put into
operation near the Tennessee
line on U. S. Highway No. 27, im
mediately followed by a second
one nearby on U. S. Highway No.
41. Other similar stations are
being established at Savannah
on U. S .Highway No. 17 and at
j Augusta on U. S. Highway No. 1
and No. 25.
Inauguration of the new serv
ice, proposed and adopted some
time ago by the State Develop
ment Board as part of its over
all tourist program for Georgia
as a whole, was timed to reach
tne motorists at the peak of the
summer vacation season. Here’s
how it works:
A large road sign tells motor
ists to stop 500 feet ahead at the
information station. There state
troopers courteously greet the
visitors, place a “visitor” sticker
on the windshield and hand
them state maps and attractive
literature, including the A. I. D.
Board’s informative booklets on
Georgia and her numerous scen
ic and historic spots.
The sticker, incidentaly, re
minds the motorists of Georgia’s
maximum 55 - mile - per-hour
speed limit and cautions them to
“stop for school busses when
they’re loading and unloading.”
The gift package of literature
also includes a card calling at
tention to the Development
Board’s approved signs for tour
ist courts. Only operators with
State Board of Health certifi
cates who me».t the A. I. D.
Board’s high standard of service,
comfort and attractiveness are
awarded these signs.

rated the new tourist service

it shall be seen, they said, that
‘no individual or nation on

In the clerk’s report, the
broadening expanse of Christian
Science activities throughout the
world was evidenced. In Ger
many and Japan, he said, groups
of Christian Scientists with oc
cupation forces are holding ser
vices. The Christian Science
church in Tokyo has been re-es
tablished, he disclosed, with
reading room and Sunday School.
At Pearl Harbor, and on the
islands of Guam and Okinawa,
Christian Science services are
held in Navy chapels, the clerk
reported. Temporary aid is being
given to Christian Scientists liv
ing in 21 hard-pressed countries,
he pointed out.
Other widespread activities of
The Mother Church were re
ported by the clerk, such as the
supplying of food, literature,
books, and clothing to Germany,
and the setting up of a network
of joint welfare committees
through which supplies can be
channeled to displaced persons
and isolated students.
“It is quite evident,” the clerk

tions made through The Mother
Church has reached to all parts
of the earth.”
