Local Health Laws
The City Council is to be
commended for passing the
eating establishment health
ordinance, which is designed to
insure the protection of the
general public, and it is hoped
by every safety-minded citi- j
zen in this county that the i
Board of Commissioners also
will see fit to endorse this
worthy plan.
It is great that the City of
Summerville and the County of
Chattooga have been able to ;
receive the services of the
State Public Health program,
but we n _-t not forget that j
they, the sanitarian, the doc
tor and the nurse, cannot do !
it alone.
The whole-hearted co-oper
ation of EVERY person in this ;
county is needed to put this 1
program over.
When we realize that this
program is designed to bene
fit the public, then we can j
realize that it is to OUR good
that we co-operate.
The passing of this ordinance
means that all restaurants in
the city will be given twelve |
months to meet the require- !
ments of the health depart- j
ment, and at the end of that :
time, they will be graded.
Those which are now Grade j
A will be so designated by a
“Grade A” card, and those be- ;
low par will have no card while '
they are striving to meet the
requirements.
This is a good plan because
it gives the proprietor a chance
to make amends where he is
lacking, and thereby help his
business and protect the pub
lic at the same time.
Let’s all co-operate!
New Bus Station
Another new building was 1
presented to the public in
Summerville this week!
Harry Lee McGinnis has done
a great service for his com
munity by constructing the
beautiful new bus terminal
which stands at the corner of
Washington Avenue and Un
ion Street.
We have needed such a build
ing for a great many years, the
only such facilities being lo
cated at Mr. McGinnis’ drug
store.
To those who have not yet
visited the neat building, we
urge you to do so now. It is
equipped with a tidy lunch
counter, an ice cream stand
and is nicer than any its size
we’ve seen in this part of the
country.
This local druggist is to be
congratulated upon his ven
ture. He is another of the lo
cal men who has realized the
possibilities in Summerville,
and who is spending the mon
ey he has made here, RIGHT
HERE to benefit not only him
self, but also the people who
helped hmi become a success
ful businessman.
We Can't Afford the
Losses!
Can we spare 189 local citi
zens this year? Can we afford
to toss nine and a half million
dollars down the drain?
The people of Detroit, Mich.,
did last year—though they did
not want to. The same can
happen in any community this j
year. It can happen here!
Traffic accidents in Detroit j
last year cost the persons in- j
volved $9,460,000. The total rep
resents only the money paid
out for doctor and hospital
bills, auto repairs, other direct
costs, and lost wages to those
injured and dead. This huge
bill for poor driving is based
on an estimate of “unit costs”
compiled by the National Con
servation Bureau, accident pre
vention division of the Asso- j
ciation of Casualty and Surety !
Companies, in previous studies
of traffic accidents in other ,
cities.
Detroit had 51,048 street ac
cidents in 1947; 186 persons
were needlessly killed; 6,459
drivers and passengers were
injured, and 4.049 pedestrians
were harmed. It seems incredi
ble that so many smash-ups
could occur in one city. Yet, if
we total up the daily traffic
mishaps in our own communi
ty, we are suffering equally as
many accidents on a per capita
basis. Local citizens are paying
just as much out of pocket for
careless and unsafe driving as
are the people of Detroit. Local
families and friends feel the
loss of those killed in traffic
accidents just as much as De
troiters, or New Yorkers, or
Timbuktooers.
We can’t afford to waste
either lives or cash. We must
learn to drive safely!
WMS SEEKS TO
AID FOREIGN NEEDY
j During the month of July, the
I circles of the Women’s Mission
| ary Society are sponsoring a
| clothing collection for the thou
sands who have lived through the
horrors of war, yet today are
dazed and discouraged for the
lack of the bare necessities of
life.
“How thankful these people
are to get even a second hand
garment,” W. M. S. leaders say.
“This dress or coat, to one of
these unfortunate ones can mean
new hope, a new life.
“May we as kyou to share what J
you can spare. Bring your gifts of,
clothing to the First Baptist [
Church, where you will find j
boxes in the vestibule to place |
your donations.”
Relief articles most needed are
all kinds and sizes of clothing, j
both summer and winter, it was
stated, and all garments should
be cleaned and repaired. Shoes, j
new and old, all sizes and styles |
are greatly needed. Fill old pock
et books with pins, needles,
thread and pencils.
Gifts will be packed and ship
ped to the Southern Baptist Re
l'ef Center at New Orleans, La.,
and from this point they will be
shipped overseas and distributed
there by church workers, to those j
persons most in need.
“Please remember that this is 1
an opportunity to help some one
in dire need,” it is urged. “Don’t
let this pass you by.”
Persons not having away to
get their clothing to the church
are asked to call Mrs. Claude
Bagley, Sr., Miss Kathrine Hen
ry or Mrs. Clyde Harlow.
With an estimated 150 freezer
locker plants in operation, Geor
gia rates first in the southeast in
freezing facilities.

FROSTED MALT NOW
AVAILABLE IN CITY
Summerville’s only frosted malt
machine was installed at the
Tooga Grill this week, according
to Joe Pullen, proprietor.
He recommends the healthful
malt for a refreshment at par
ties, especially during the sum
mer months.
Adequate Fire Equipment Needed
Adequate equipment for com
i bating fires should be on every
| farm. The house and outbuild
| ings should have approved fire
I extinguishers which are inject
ed regularly. Every members of
the family should know how to
use this equipment.
Prevent Breeding of Flies
To prevent an early crop of
flies, the barn and lots should
be kept clean. Mud holes and
moist places should be filled in
as moisture helps encourage
breeding places. The fly popula- |
tion for the whole summer can !
be reduced by killing or prevent- j
ing the breeding of the first j
crop.
