Veterans Corner
Questions regarding veterans’
hospitalization and home-town
! treatment asked by service men
are replied to here with authori
tative answers by the Veterans
Administration. This column is
published by The Summerville
News as a service to our veter
ans.
Q. If I apply for hospitaliza
tion, how long will I have to wait
before I am admitted to a VA
hospital?
A. If you have a service-con
nected disability you do not have
to wait to receive hospitalization.
I If your disability is nonservice
connected but is an emergency,
you are admitted immediately.
Nnoservice-connected ailments
that do not require emergency
i treatment have to wait until a
bed is available, and the time
varies at each hospital. Nonser
vice - connected veterans also
must sign statements that they
cannot afford to pay for treat
ment elsewhere.
Q. May I go to my own doctor
for treatment of my disability
and have Veterans Administra
tion pay the bill?
A. Only if you receive prior VA i
approval for such treatment or |
care. Approval is based on the
following conditions: (1) You '
i must have a service-connected :
disability; (2) VA must not be
able to provide the treatment in
its own hospitals or clinics; (3)
travel to a VA station would work
a hardship on you. In emergency
, cases, a veteran may apply to
! the nearest physician and have ■
! the physician notify the VA re
i gional office having jurisdiction I
ever the area.
(Veterans wishing further in- '
formation about veterans’ bene- I
fits may have their questions I
