BOXING
Washington, D. C.—The state
. ment by heavyweight champ
{ ion Joe Louis that he had every
right to change his mind about
retiring as king of heavyweights
is an interesting one. No fight
fan will argue the matter too
severely with Joe. Os course
everyone has the same right to
change his mind, Joe Louis in
cluded.
But Joe never has changed it
before after making a public ,
and final statement to the con
trary. Changing one’s mind about ;
things is natural. However,;
there are some who stick to!'
their statements at great cost, i
sometimes, too. A man is often ;
. judged by his reputation for de
pendability, and Louis has built '
up a good one in this respect. :
Now, after disposing of Joe
Walcott in June and after nicely
saying that was his last fight—
* for his mother. Joe Louis says he
might fight again. He doesn’t (
say he willhe reitterates that
he “might” fight again. Curi
ously, after his first retirement 1
statement, reporters were con- ,
stantly hounding Louis to learn
whether or not his retirement ’
was in earnest. Louis always said
that it was—and his fans and j
the boxing world believed him— .
because he was usually depend- ‘
ably. He had always been de
pendable before ,
Then, Louis’ indecision may ;
disappoint some of his old back
> ers, but it is nothing to get ex
cited about. There is, however, ,
one side of Louis’ statement that
looks tarnished.
As every boxing fan knows,
the tournament of Champions is

—A Modern and New Building—
Hair Motor Co. z Inc.
threatening the dynasty of the
Twentieth Century Sporting Club
in New York. The latter outfit
has probably done boxing more
harm than good on many oc
casions, and it’s no secret many
of those who have boxing’s best
interest at heart, want to see at
least two competitive promotion
al groups in and around New
York. Louis, to no discredit on
his part, has been tied up with
the latter group— Mike Jacobs’
outit.
Now comes along the new
Tournament of Champions. It
lines up a Zale-Cerdan fight—
which is a whopper. On the same
card the Lesnevich-Walcott fight
is supposed to come off. Over in
New York, the Twentieth Cen
tury group can’t match this card
—without Louis. Also this group
knows that the meaning of the
Lesnevich-Walcott fight would
vanish if Louis came out of re
tirement.
Naturally the Twentieth Cen
tury boys want Louis to come
out of retirement. If he does, he
fights for them, and when he did
he just might have had some
thing to do with the cancellation
of the T. of C. heavyweight bout.
It would have come off along
with the Zale-Cerdan fight in
late September. Oddly, Louis
makes his “might” announce
ment just in time, a few days
before the T. of C. bout.
All of which may be coinci
dence. Anyhow, We’re disap
pointed in Joe Louis’ announce
ment, and in a lot of other
things people are taking for
granted.
