A Short-Short Story
BARN DANCE
By Papinta J. Knowles
Betty Taylor wished she could
walk down town without some
one stopping her on the street
and saying, "It’s the' cleverest
idea! Are you going? It’ll look
well, strange though, not to see
you and Jim Carr together . . .”
And then that odd look, as if
wanting terribly' to know' why
she and Jim weren’t seen to
gether these days out not dar
ing to have the nerve to ask.
And with the big bam dance
taking place on the Donovan
farm . . .
“Why, of course I’m going,”
Betty always managed to return,
and then felt a Uttle peeved be
cause Allenville’s thousand or so
populace doubted that she would
go to the bam dance Susan
Donovan was giving, because
Susan was Jim’s attraction now.
She had never told anyone,
not even her closest friend, why
she and Jim broke up, because
fact was, she couldn’t —not be
ing able to give a reason. They
hadn’t quarreled. They’d merely
drifted apart. Jim got to going
with Susan Donovan, and she
had got td going with Herb
Rainey. They frequently met at
parties or on the street, and
they always exchanged conver
sation. At parties they danced
together, and neither mentioned
the past when their companion
ship had seemed inseparable.
One of her friends had ven
tured, "But it looks like you’d
have some feeling toward him,
after going with him so long.”
“I’m going with Herb now,”
Betty had said.
It was funny how others in
sisted uoon creating certain
feelings for you, and even run
ning your life, if you’d allow
them. Couldn’t they see that she
wasn’t concerned about Jim Carr
any more?
The night for the barn dance
came beautifully clear, as if it
had been a part of Susan’s order.
A cool surmner, breeze stirred
across the countryside, and a
full moon hung in the sky like

a great lamp lighted up for the
gay occasion. The new barn,
with its shining alminum roof
and bright lights coming from
the windows and doorways,
shone in jewel-like splendor
from atop a little hill that un
dulated toward lush pastures
beyond.
Young couples parked their
cars inside the gate at the road
and walked up the short lane to
the brightly lighted barn, sing
ing old songs and laughing and
i talking.
“Only Susan would think of
giving a dance to christen a new
barn,” one of the girls giggled.
"It’s like breaking a bottle of
champagne on a new liner! What
fun! Or maybe this is an an
nouncement party.”
“Combination of the two, of
course, I’ll wager,” another called
out in response above the sing
ing voices that r ose in the clear
night air.
Betty heard, but she pretended
, that she hadn’t, for she knew the
i remark had been intended for
, her benefit. She '’lung to Herb’s
arm and joined in the singing.
Herb said, “I didn’t know you
could sing like this Betty. You
belong in opera. .
Betty laughed drowning his
voice, until he joined in with his
! deep bass.
Laughter came from the barn
as they neared it, and Olin’s
Music Ticklers were already tun
ing up with "Put On Your Old
Grey Bonnet.”
Inside the bam was a bedlam
of gayety, and the decorative
scheme throughout was sugges
tive of the season’s first harvest
that was due. Streamers of
green, yellow and white crepe
paper hung from the new raft
ers and wisps of ripened grain,
tied with huge bows of red rib
bon, swung against the walls
above long pine tables being pil
ed high with delicious food by
the elder ladies of the com
munity. The barn floor had been
polished to a dazzling luster, and
couples were already gathering

toward the center of the floor
for the first dance.
Betty saw Jim Carr almost as
soon as she entered the bam. He
was standing by Susan, and they
were talking with a group near
by. She’d never seemed to notice
before how Jim stood out in a
crowd, how much taller he seem
ed than anyone else —how dis
tinctive looking.
Later in the evening she and
Jim danced together.
“Having a good time?” he
asked Betty.
“Wonderful! Susan knows how
to do the christening ceremony
up brown,” Betty said, laughing.
Susan and Herb had danced off
together, and now Betty’s eyes
searched the crowd for them.
“Know what I heard, Betty?
“Could never guess.”
“I heard that you weren’t com
ing tonight.”
Betty understood Jim’s grin.
She laughed. "Aren’t people silly,
Jim? Why, I’m not concerned
about you and Susan.” She didn’t
particularly like talking on the
subject, and she wondered sud
denly why Jim brought it up.
They’d never mentioned Susan
or his connection with her be
fore.
“Let’s take a look around out
side, Betty,” Jim said.
It’s an excuse to talk to me, she
though, with some irritation. He’s
asuming certain things, but I’ll
settle him on that score, she
vowed.
They’d hardly reached the out
side of the barn in the shadows
when Jim pulled her back. Betty
understood. They were about to
stumble upon a couple talking
in low intimate tones.
When the counle came out of
the shadows and went into the
bam again, Betty’s breath suck
ed inward with surprise.
Jim laughed. "Susan does
things up brown in other lines of
endeavor, it appears,” he said.
“Particularly the kiss she must
have given Herb ” Betty tried to
say lightly. "I’m sorry for you,
Jim.”
“Don’t be,” he said, for I was
never serious about Susan. I just
hate to see you hurt.”
“Hurt? Why, I’ve never cared
for Herb,” she said, before she
thought to guard herself.
Jim was close, and she didn’t
draw away from him. “It hasn’t
been the same since we quit go
ing together, has it Betty?”
Betty startled herself by saying,
“No—” And then, “Maybe the
people haven’t been so silly after
all, Jim.”

42 inches above the floor. At this

Off With The Old!
The skipper’s son had been
watching his father at the wheel.
Presently the man turned to the
boy. “Take over the wheel for a
second lad,” he said. “I must go
and have a look at my charts.”
He paused, and pointed to a
distant star. “Steer by that and
you’ll be all right,” he added.
The boy grasped the wheel,
but very soon tnat boat was out
of her course. Finally the star
disappeared astern the vessel.
The boy scratched his head in
perplexity. “Hi, dad,” he called,
“come and find me another star!
I've passed that one!”

Two men were talking to

The other, who knew some
thing of literature in its vari

“It’s gone to two dollars and

The old rule from storing kit
