DDT DUSTERS
TAME TYPHUS
DURING 1948
Typhus is rapidly being dusted
out of existence in Georgia. State
Health Department typhus con
trol dumped over half a million
pounds of DDT on the tiny
typhus flea in 1948.
As a result of an intensive
three-year campaign against the
disease, the number of cases
reported has dropped more than
eighty per cent. The reduction
in the larger metropolitan coun
ties was astonishing. Fulton,
Bibb, Richmond, and Chatham
counties reported from ninty
three to ninty-seven per cent
fewer cases for the same three
year period.
Much of this was due to the
work of the “case-investigating”
teams. The investigators are the
minute men of the typhus pro
gram. The moment a case is re
ported to them, they are on the
job, checking the patient’s home
and business surroundings for
rats.
Usually, in less than week, the
investigators will have complete
ly treated with DDT any rat in
fested area frequented by the
patient. Entire city blocks are
dusted in this process and at
times it has been necessary to
dust an entire community.
Less dramatic work was sched
uled county-wide DDT dusting;
and rat poisioning programs. In j
1948 typhus control programs
were initiated in over 75 counties j
and more than 150,00 dwellingsj
and buildings were treated.

VETERANS CORNER
Hospitalization and other
benefits bring many queries
from veterans. Answers are ob
tained from the Veterans Ad

this column by The Summer

veterans.
Q: I am a World War II vet

treatment at a VA hospital?
A: Not unless your wife is an
ex-service woman. Dependents
of veterans are not entitled to
hospitalization under the VA.
Q: I want to give the bene

choosing, in the event of my
death, either a lump sum settle
ment or any of the available
monthly payment plans. If I
designate ncr option, will she
have this right?
A: No. Payment in a lump
sum may be designated only by
the insured. However, if you
provide for lump sum payment,
she may have her choice of
available plans.
Q: The automible furnished
me by VA was totally wrecked
in an unavoidable accident.
Will VA give me another one?
A: There is no provision un

New High in
Georgia Employment
Total non-agricuittirai employ
ment in Georgia reached the
highest point in December of
any month on record. Estimated
I employment of 753,500 workers
I was 2.800 above November and
almost 1,900 higher than the
i same month of the preceding
y ear. Following a normal season
i al pattern there was a marked
| increase in temporary employ
i ment in trade which gained 6,600
workers, and in government,
[ primarily postal employees,
j where there was a gain of 4,100.
| These increases more than offset
! seasonal declines in construction
i and food manufacturing indus
i tries where there was a loss of
' 2,000 and 5,400 workers, respec
i tively.
Total manufacturing ernploy
! ment showed a loss of about
: 6,000 workers in December, con
; tinuing a general downward
trend which began in July of
; this year. Seasonal contraction
i of the food industry with a loss
1 of 5,400 workers was the major
i contributing factor to the loss
in manufacturing. Although
this flunctuation was normal, the
food industry operated at a low
er level in 1948 than in 1947.
Fluctuations in the textile in
dustry during 1948 were less
marked than in the preceding
year. Employment for the De
cember. showing a decline of j
only 200 workers, indicated a'
levelling off employment in that!
industry. The trend for this j
group has been generally down- j
ward since last March.
Expansion continued in the I
lumber industry with an in
crease of 500 workers in De
cember, primarily in logging
camps, sawmills, and planing
mills. Lumber showed a gain of
more than 2,000 workers over
the same month of 1947. The
trend for this industry has been
gradually upward since the war,
indicating a steady demand for
its products.
Contract construction showed
a normal seasonal decline in
December 1947. Declines were
general throughout the industry.
There was some indication that
loss of employment through
completion of contracts on hand
may be largely overcome when
construction work on pending
contracts is started in the spring
of 1949.
The gain of almost 6,600 work

Communities Get
Advice On How Io
Bid for Industry
ATLANTA, (GPS) Is your
community getting its share of
new industries? If not, why not?
Perhaps it is because necessary
preliminary steps have not been
taken that would convince a
manufacturer your community is
ready, willing and able to take
care of his plant.
At least, the State Agricultural
and Industrial Development
Board believes that every Geor
gia community should have some
definite plan ready to submit to
industries interested in coming
to Georgia that would show them
what the community can and
cannot do.
This has been done by some
communities through their de
velopment corporations, which
were set up by local citizens for
the primary purpose of providing I
funds for erecting buildings to j
fit the specific requirements oi
the new industry, it was pointed
out in the board’s latest Indus
trial Newsletter. There now are
some 20 of these non-profit
corporations in Georgia.
“The industrial development
corporations,” the board said,
“are excellent and have proved

assets in obtaining new indus
tries during the postwar recon
version expansion period. There
are, however, many other com
munities throughout the state,
both large and small, that could
benefit if a provision were made
whereby new industries could be
assured of funds for new build
ings.”
The board suggested that for
communities that did not actual
ly want to formally set up a de
velopment corporation, which
would necessitate selling stock
and the like, perhaps they could
devise some other plan to obtain
pledges from local citizens for
a certain amount of money. In
this way, when a new industry
investigated a community as a
possible site, a definite proposi
tion could be offered the in
dustry for erecting a new build
ing in accordance with its speci
fications.
Whatever plan used.” the
board continued, “the important
factor is to make available some
method for providing funds for
new buildings. While the most
important things to be empha
sized are our native labor, our
climate and our wealth of
natural resources, nevertheless,
the evidence which a develop
ment corporation, or a group of
citizens pledged to support a new
plant, gives us the proof needed
to show the community is ready
