RIDING ON AN OUTRIGGER—Mrs. Harry Marks apparently is
enjoyin gher venture on the crude, but effective outrigger in the
Fiji Islands.
FIJI LOVELY
From Page One
borne and the University of
Paris.
Two shark’s teeth were
brought back by the Chattooga
County woman, who said they
are considered lucky in Fiji,
somewhat like a rabbit’s foot
or a four-leaf clover is consider
ed lucky here.
Cannibals
There are no cannibals on the
island now and Mrs. Marks says
that credit is given missionar
ies for the revolution in the
life of the natives of the is
lands. A descendant of a former
cannibal chieftain is a gradu
ate of Oxford, Cambridge and
Eton and is a very cultured per
son, Mrs. Marks relates.
In the olden times, each time
a chieftain was killed in battle,
15 or 20 wives also were killed to
go with him into the new
world.”
“Even they,” says Mrs. Marks
"were aware there was a here
after.”
One realizes how heathen
they really were when told of
and shown a certain bamboo
temple. A live, person was plac
ed under each supporting pillar,
declared Mrs. Marks, and buried
alive.
The United States is not the
only place that has a racial
problem: Fiji has hers too.
The trouble lies between the
native Fijiians, of whom there
are approximately 120,000 and
the Indians, who number ap
proximately 115,000. There are
15,000 English and very few
Americans.
The Indians dress exquisitely
the women wearing beautiful
brightly colored saris and many
gold ornaments. They often
wear ornaments in their noses
and foreheads, as well as in
their ears. Many of the men
wear kaki pants and T-shirts.
Southern Cross
“You know you’ve always
heard of the Southern Cross and
so I was anxious to see it,” re
lates Mrs. Marks. “Well, was I
ever disappointed. It’s in the
milky way and it’s only four
stars and you could put the
whole thing in the big dipper.”
But the funniest thing Mrs.
Marks saw on her whole trip
was the moon upside down!
“It’s actually upside down.”
she said, “and I just couldn’t
ever get used to it.”
Afnong her pictures, Mrs.
Marks pointed out one of a
White Russian and his wife.
They escaped from Russia by
riding donkeys across the Him
alayas. They hope to come to
the U. S. someday.
There’s very little meat on the
island, although it’s a wonder
ful place to raise beef cattle.
Mrs. Marks says.
“The grass is abundant. Why
it grows 5 feet high and will
grow two inches in one night.
That’s because there’s so much
rain.”
Most of the meat is shipped
in, however fruit, including lem
ons, oranges, bananas, paw
paw, pineapple and avocado,
grows wild on the islands. Or
chids also grow wild.
This was the second time Mrs.
Marks had seen her daughter
since her marriage in 1945 to
Mr. Major, a n Englishman
whom she met while serving
with the U. S. Army as a nurse
on Makin Island. Mrs. Major was
home briefly in 1947.
“You know Mary’s father was
an Englishman and she just felt
close to Robert from the start
probably for that reason. She
was very fond of her father."
In addition to visiting Mrs
Major, Mrs. Marks also visited
relatives on the coast, including
her son, Charles, who lives in a
trailer in Seattle, Wash.
“That was more fun, living In
that trailer," declares Mrs.
Marks.
The earthquake In Seattle oc
cured while she was visiting
them, however they had gone
out of town on a sight - seeing
trip and were not present for
the tragic event.
Mrs. Marks left Georgia Oc
tober 2, 1948. and returned
April 25, 1949, a period of seven
months, and says she hasn’t re
gretted a moment of her trip.
“—But I’m surely glad to be
back here and I wouldn’t trade
this place for anywhere on
earth. It’s just the nicest place
there is.”
