CHECK OLD-AGE AND SURVIVORS
INSURANCE ACCOUNT, SAYS RAY
Checking on your old-age sur
vivors insurance account is a
good deal like having your bank
account balanced and is just as
good business. This is the advice
of Welch Ray, Manager of the
Rome office of the Social Se
curity Adminstration, in re
minding workers of this free
service of his agency.
“We urge all workers to check
jat intervals on their accounts,”
Mr. Ray explained, “so that they
may be sure of receiving credit
for all wages they earn. We take
every precaution to insure the;
accuracy of our records but!
faulty reporting by employers
still causes trouble. Most errors j
on reports are due to mistakes
in the worker’s name or ac- i
count number or the failure to I
show any number. Sometimes j
the wrong amount of wages is I
reported and occasionally no re- j
port at all is made.
“Most mistakes are corrected |
in our Central Records Office;
or by getting information from.
the employer or worker in- j
volved,” Mr. Ray continued.
Please send me statement of the wages recorded in my old-age and
survivors insurance account.

Veteran's Corner
The questions asked Veterans
i Administration contact repre
sentatives by former servicemen
are many and varied. Here are
j authoritative answers to some of
ithe most common queries:
Q: I am a veteran of World
War II and have a bad conduct
discharge which is neither hon
orable nor dishonorable, but VA
has denied me compensation be
cause of it. Isn’t VA bound by
the character of discharge giv-
; en me by the Army?
A. No. Under existing law, to
be entitled to benefit under laws
administered by VA, a World
War II veteran must have been
discharged or released from ac
tive service under conditions
other than dishonorable. Where
the discharge, as in your case, is
neither honorable nor dishonor
’able, the VA must make a de
! termination as to whether it is
under other than dishonorable
' conditions.
Q. I am considered totally dis
abled for insurance purposes but
receive only 20 per cent for dis
ability compensation payments.
Can my award be increased?
A. Your award can be increas
ed only if the serviec-connected
disability is shown to have in
creased in severity. For insur
ance purposes, there may be
other disabilities, not service
connected, which, when corn
ed only if the service-connected
। nested condition produce total
■ disability.
Q Must all my evidence to
। reopen my claim before VA be
j notarized?
A Yes, if it is submitted on

“But unfortunately there are
some instances in which lack of
information prevents our giving
the worker credit for his wages.
And the amount of credit is
very important because we use
it as the basis for figuring the
size of the payments a worker
or his family ma yreceive. An
other important point to re
member is that under the statue
of limitations a worker must
call attention to an error in his
account within four years after
the wages are earned. If he
waits longer than that we may
not be able to adjust his rec
ords.”
Mr. Ray added that there is
no charge for furnishing wage
statements and that any work
er can obtain one easily. For
the convenience of our readers
we are publishing below a cou
pon which can be used in re
questing a statement. The

NEW SLANT
ON DOUGHNUTS
FOR VARIETY
Although doughnuts are al
ways a favorite of adults and
children alike, it is well some
times to vary your favorite
doughnut recipe, suggests Reba
Staggs, well-known home econo
mist. One examnle of how to do
this and still rate high with all
the members of the family is to
try cinnamon • orange dough
nuts.
Cinnamon-Orange Doughnuts
2 tablespoons lard
% cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten
2 tablespoons grated orange
rind
4 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
3 4 teaspoons soda
V 2 teaspoon salt
% cup orange juice
Cream thoroughly the short
ening and sugar. Add the well
beaten eggs and orange rind;
mix well. Sift all dry ingredi
ents and add to creamed mix
ture alternately with the orange
juice. Chill the dough thorough
! ly, then roll to near one - half
inch thickness and cut wHth
doughnut cutte”. Fry in deep
hot lard at 350-360° F. until
brown. (If you have no ther
mometer, you’ll find the lard is
about the right temperature for
frying doughnuts when a cube
of bread without crust takes one
minute to brown.) Drain, then
dip in mixture of cinnamon and
sugar. An orange - cinnamon ic
ing made by moistening pow
dered sugar w<th orange juice
then adding a little cinnamon is
another variation well worth
trying. Have the icing of thin
consistency so it will be as a
glaze on the doughnuts.
the subject of service - connec
tion. Statements from physicians
submitted for the purpose of de
termining whether a physical
examination should be requested
need not be notarized.
Q Would the amount of com
pensation I receive from VA be
affected if I served overseas?
A The amount of compensa
tion payable is predicted on the
degree of disability and not on
place of service.
