After a lively argument, says
wife: “Bill, you’re a terrible

“So he ought to be tender,”

July 25 Deadline for
Vet Readjustment
Allowances-Huiet
Unless Congress amends the
existing law, Veterans of World
War 11 who were discharged
from the Armed Forces on or
before July 25, 1947, will be un
[ able to claim Servicemen’s
Readjustment Allowances un
der the G. I. Bill of Rights after
July 25. 1949, Ben T. Huiet,
Commissioner of Labor, report
ed today.
All veterans discharged sub- j
sequent to July 25, 1947, will be
eligible to claim readjustment
allowances at any time during
the two-year period following
their date of discharge.
Since the initiation of the
program in September, 1944,
over 171,000 Georgia Veterans
of Wrold War 11 have received
one or more checks, but only
one Veteran out of ten in Geor
gia has exhausted the total al
lowances available to him.
During the month of May,
about 12,000 ex-G. I.’s received
servicemen’s readjustment al
lowances. The July 25, deadline
date, Mr. Huiet said, will affect
many Georgia Veterans who
served in World War 11.
The Servicemen’s Readjust
ment Allowance program is
supported by federal funds and
the Employment Security
Agency of the State Depart
ment of Labor has been serving
as an agent for the Veterans
Admistration for this program
in Georgia. Mr. Huiet added—
as the Federal Law now stands,
the entire readjustment allow
ance program is scheduled to
expire on July 25, 1952.

First Choice
Question —Why did the army
(choose mules and the navy ma
rines?
Answer—The army had first
choice.
A PERFECT POACH
A perfect poached egg is ten
der, upstanding and compact
in shape, without rough edges.
For tenderness, it should be
cooked at low heat. Boiling will
toughen the white, and rough
bubbling may break It up.
Perfection In poaching calls
first for top quality eggs, now
at their peak of supply. Grade
AA or A eggs should be used be
cause their whites are thick and
stand up well around firm, high
yolks.

DAV Returns Set
Os Keys to Scoggins
The Disabled American Vet
erans has returned a set of keys
to W. A. Scoggins, Route 4,
Summerville.
Attached to the keys was a
DAV Idento-Tag, miniature li
cense tag for key-rings, which
is distributed to 30,000,000 mo
torists each year and the replica
of their state license plates en
ables the DAV to return 5,000
keys a month from its national
headquarters in Cincinnati.
In addition to key-loss in
surance, the Idento-Tag through
contributions enables the DAV
to maintain its free rehabilita
tion service for disabled veterans
and their dependents.
Last year the DAV obtained
more than $18,000,000 in benefits
for disabled veterans and their
families. The organization has
the largest staff of national
service officers of any veterans
organization.
Keys are returned to owners
from all over the world. One of
the most unusual key losses and
returns saw a Cincinnati grocery
employee lose his set in a sack
of oats. The keys were found
when the sack was opened
aboard a freighter in the Eng
lish Channel enroute to Poland
and they made their way back
via the DAV.
Tags even brought back keys
from the war zones.
For the motorists who wish
extra Idento-Tags for extra sets
of keys, the DAV has established
a special order department,
which handles more than 100,-
000 requests each year.
The DAV Idento-Tag plant is
owned and operated by the DAV
in the interests of disabled vet
erans and employs disabled vet
erans in their manufacture.
NSLI Information
Given by Slaton
There is no grace period at
the expiration date of a term
National Service Life Insurance
policy, it was emphasized this
week by J. M. Slaton Jr., Dis
trict Manager, VA, Atlanta.
“It must be renewed before
expires,” he said, “otherwise a
physical examination will be
necessary.”
It was also pointed out by the
VA District Manager that prior
to January 1, 1950, disabilities
which are actually service in
curred and not presumptive, less
than total in degree, will be
waived for insurance purposes.
“That means that those vet
erans who haven’t yet reinstated
their NSLI should do so at once.
It means that those who now
have policies should be certain
they are renewed before the ex
piration date.
“Our Insurance Service is do
ing all possible to prevent vet
erans from losing their policies
before their expiration date. A
first notice is sent out 60 days
in advance and is followed again
30 days later with a second one.
Each policyholder is mailed a
simple renewal form to execute
| and return to us. Actually, this
form is not essential. A simple
written request, accompanied by
the proper premium, is suffi
cient, but we've adopted the
form because we believe it to the
best interest of our policy hold
ers.”
It's sad but true, said Mr.
Slaton, that many veterans have
never changed their beneficiary
or settlement option since they
first applied for policies six.
seven and eight years ago. And
this despite the fact that many
1 of them have since married and
(are the parents of growing chil
dren.
