B&PW Club Here
Has Regular Meeting
The Summerville Business and
Professional Women’s Club held
their monthly meeting at John’s
Place on the evening of July 14.
The meeting was devoted entire
ly to business.
The president, Miss Beulah
Shropshire, presided and called
on all officers and directors for
reports. She urged that all com
mittees meet regularly for the
purpose of keeping keen interest
in the Club. Each committee in
the Club has some phase of civic
development as its particular in
terest.
Plans are underway for the
clearing of the proposed recrea
tion park on Resevoir Hill.
Mrs. E. C. Pesterfield, chair
man of the Program Coordina
tion Committee, outlined the
program work of the Club for
the coming year.
Miss Oniie Wylie, home dem
onstration agent, was elected a
full member of the Club. Invi
tations to membership in the
Club was extended to six pros
pective members. Those invited

State B&PWC

representing 33 Business and
Professional Women’s Clubs in I
the state of Georgia, will assem
ble at Shorter College this week
end for a meeting of the Board
of Directors and for workshops
on the program for 1949-50. The
Rome Club, hostess to this gath
ering. has arranged an interest
ing program for the guests.
Representatives will arrive
late Friday afternoon. On Friday
night, in Brooks Chapel, the
State President, Mrs. Helen K
Smothers, of Columbus, will
make her report of the Board
meeting of the National Feder
ation which was held in Jack
sonville, July 1-5. Following this
meeting an informal party will
be given in the college gym
nasium.
Saturday morning will be de
voted to workshops. Chairmen of
State Standing Committees will
plan and discuss the program
for the coming year with local
committee chairmen. This pro
gram which is suggested by the
National Federation will be used
by the 150.000 members through
out the United States.
Perennial News
There were 209 enrolled in the
Vacation Bible School held at
Perennial Baptist Church. The
Junior girls made dolls and the
Intermediate girls made aprons.
The boys made bird houses. Mrs.
Oliver Pledger was the director.
Miss Mae Ball was the dinner
guest of Miss Carrie Lee Wooten
Sunday.
James W. Hurley, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Robert Hurley, of Sum
merville, Route 2, has recently
been promoted to Corporal. Cpl.
Hurley took his basic training at

day, July 10, at 4 p. m.
The marriage was quietly
solemnized at the home of The
Rev. G. C. Schroeder at Gore.

ter, Mary Jean.
Mrs. O. C. Mahan was matron
of honor and O. C. Mahan was

The bride received her edu
cation at Summerville High
School, graduating with the
class of 1948 and is employed
at the office of Dr. B. Lovin
good, D.D.S. as a Dental Hy
gienist.
Her brother is John Elliott
Cramer.
The bride wore a light blue
dress with white accessories, Her
flower was an orchid.
The matron-of-honor wore a
model of blue pique with navy
accessories. Her corsage was of
mixed garden flowers.
Mr. Hill is the son of Mrs.
Thomas H. Hill and the late Mr.
Hill, of Fort Payne, Ala. After
■ attending school in Alabama,
i Mr. Hill served two years in the
i U. S. Navy as a pharmacist.
He is at present employed with
the National Life and Accident
Insurance Company.

Searels, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Horace J. Searels became
the bride of Frank Holland
Bandy, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. J.
Bandy, of LaFayette, A. H. Ken
namer, minister of El Paso,
Texas, performed the double ring
ceremony.
The nuptial music was pre
sented by a choir composed of
members of the Trion High
School Glee Club.
The bride entered on the arm
of her father, by whom she was
given in marriage. Her gown
was of imported misty marqui
sette, featuring a round off
shoulder neckline, outlined with
a shirred ruffle, and tight bod
ice. The bouffant shirt was
fashioned of rows of shirred ruf
fles, billowing into a chapel
length train. Her fingertip veil
of bridal illusion fell from a
coronet of chantilly lace and
orange blossoms. She carried a
white Bible topped with a white
orchid and showered with rib
! bon and stephanotis.
Miss Bette Cooper, m^id of
honor, wore a pink embossed
l organdy gown, trimmed with
net, with a shoulder-length veil
of pink net. She carried a spray
of blue flowers tied with pink
ribbon.

became the bride of Billy Joe I
Hix, of Trion.
The ceremony was performed
at the First Baptist Church by
the minister. The church was
decorated with greenery and
gladiolas.
Miss Ruth Young, sister of
the bride, was the maid of hon
or; while Gordon, brother of the
groom, served as best man.
The bride, dressed in egg shell
satin and with egg shell and
green accessories, wore a purple
orchid. She was given in marri
age by her uncle, Burl Wallin.
The bride’s mother wore a
navy blue dress with blue ac
cessories and a corsage of white
carnations.
Nuptial music was furnished
by Johnny Dyer, organist, and
Jo Ann Hilton, soloist.
Immediately following the
wedding a reception was given
at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Charlie Davis.

Said work shall begin within ten (10» days after formal execu
tion of contract and shall be completed within 200 working days
When contract has been executed, written notice shall be given the
Contractor, at which time, and not before, work may be started.
Contract executed pursuant to this Notice is binding on the
State Highway Department, as such. Said contract will not create
liability, expressed or implied, against the undersigned Director of
the State Highway Department, as an individual nor against any
employee of the State Highway Department, in his or her individual
capacity.
The minimum wage to be paid under this contract shall be the
amounts set out in the Labor Provisions included in the Proposal.
I The attention of bidders is directed to the Special Provisions cover -
ing employment of labor, methods of construction, subletting or
assigning the contract and to the use of domestic materials.
Plans and specifications are on file at the office of the under
| signed at Atlanta, and at Gainesville. Georgia, and at the office of
'the Board of County Commissioners of Chattooga County at Sum
merville. Georgia, where they may be Inspected free of charge.
Copies of the plans may be obtained upon payment In advance of
the sum of $15.30. Copies of the General Specifications may be ob
tained upon payment in advance o' the sum of $3.00. which sums
will not be refunded.
Proposals must be submitted on regular forms, which will be
supplied by the undersigned, and may be obtained by a payment,
In advance of $5.00 for each proposal issued. When the proposal is
submitted, It must be accompanied by a certified check, cashier s
check, negotiable United States Bonds, or other acceptable security
In the amount of $7500 00. and must be plainly marked “Proposal
for Road Construction," County and Number, and show the time
of opening as advertised. Check of the low bidder will be cashed
and all other checks will be returned as soon as the contract Is
awarded, unless it is deemed advisable by the State Highway De
partment to hold one or more checks. If an unusual condition
arises, the State Highway Department deserves the right to cash
all checks Bidders Bond will not be accepted. Bond will be re
quired of the successful bidder as required by law.
Contracts will not be awarded to contractors who have not
been placed on the list of qualified Contractors prior to the date of
award. No proposal will be issued to any bidder later than 12
Noon Eastern Standard Time of the day prior to the date of open
ing bids.
All blds must show totals for each item and total amount of bid.
Right is reserved in the undersigned to delay the award of the con
tract for a period not to exceed thirty (30) days from the date of
opening bids, during which period blds shall remain open and not
subject to withdrawal. Right is also reserved in the undersigned
to reject any and all bids and to waive all formalities
Upon compliance with the requirements of the Standard Spe
cifications. Ninety (90) per cent of the amount of work done In any
calendar month will be paid for by the 25th. day of the succeeding
month, provided that payrolls have been submitted as required and
the remainder within thirty (30) days after the Final Statement Is
approved by the Engineer.
