“Harry the Hermit,” as he’s
called, came into town last week
and, as usual, caused quite a stir.
He looks like a cross between Santa
Claus and Daniel Boone.
We had a friendly glass of beer
together and I asks him, “Don’t
you ever get annoyed at the way
some people laugh and stare as you
go by?” “Shucks no,” Harry says.
“Only while they’re laughin’ at
me, I’m feelin’ a mite sorry for
them. Imagine—folks so ungrown
up they can’t see I’m really just
the same as they are underneath.”

From where I sit, Harry’s a lot
more “civilized” than the people
who make fun of him. He’s con
tented, lives the way he believes is
right without harming anyone—
and what’s more, he’s tolerant of
others whose tastes in living are
different from his.

Going to the Fair?
Os course, you are. Who isn’t?
It’s a grand place to go and it’s
one all of us look forward to
every year.
Tell you a secret: Maybe we
women folk look forward to it
more especially since we know
that likely it affords us a gen
uine good reason for a new
dress.
But the fair isn’t all. There’s
a dance, coming up just next
week at the Memorial Home that
means a new party dress must
be purchased.
For the fair you might like a
corduroy dress or suit. A two
piece green dress with a match
ing leather belt is most fetch
ng. Another two-piece cordu
roy (in light gray or charcoal
gray) has a fly-away jacket and
two big pockets.
There are many skirts to
choose from at Esseeman’s.
Most festive is a plaid featuring
navy blue and green. Another
skirt is severely tailored with a
single slit pocket and one big
kick pleat in front. I saw it in
green gabardine.
Matching blouses with short
sleeves in wool jersey, rayon or
nice cozy wool sweaters make
your outfit so right for the Fair,
(or school, or office)
A peek at the suits showed me
that Esserman’s, as usual, has a
nice supply on hand, including
tweeds, gabardines and worsted
fabrics.
Thinking about all you gals
who’re wondering what you’ll
wear to the dance, I looked over
the party dresses and found that
by stopping at this store you’ll
find most anything your heart
desires.
Black? Well, how about try
ing black in a new way? There’s
a two-piece outfit you’ll like.
Take off the metallic taffeta
jacket (which has rows of self
covered buttons up the front/
and presto you’re lovely dn a
sleeveless jet black crepe—per
fect for dancing. Wear it now
and wear it later. It’ll fit in with
the holiday season nicely.
Blue won’t make you blue!
No. mam, if you wear the blue
crepe and satin dress I saw at
Esserman’s. It won’t make your
beau or hubby blue either, be
cause he’ll be pleased pink with
you in this swing skirt, the bot
tom of which is bordered with
a wide band of satin. Six white
buttons effectively break the
montony of blue.
“Woo. woo” will be your first
reaction when you catch a
glimpse of yourself in this
matelasse gold and green dress.
Lovely pockets and unusual gold

buttons finish it off perfectly!
If you want to match up your
outfit, get a black taffeta swing
skirt and buy a pretty blouse to
match. There is a variety to
choose from but one of the
prettiest has a flared skirt with
tiny waves dipping from top to
bottom.
Oh, some of you will want
formals. There’s a whole flock
of them at Esserman’s too. But
I’m not going to let you in on
their lovliness. Just stop by
some day soon.

WAITING FOR THE BACKING
St. John 13-21. ‘When Jesus
had thus said He was troubled
in spirit and testified and said,
Verily, Verily, I say unto you
that one of you shall betray me“
Our subject is “Waiting for
the Backing.”
Yes, how many are looking at
the task of carrying the Gospel
today? Some may say, “Oh, I
can’t go without the backing of
the people.” But let me tell you
of men who went without the
backing of the pepole. Jesus
himself preached the truth .and
was persecuted for it. He was
knocked by the Pharasees in
stead of being backed. His life
was sought to be destroyed.ln
stead of Jesus waiting for the
backing of men, He went into
' the temple and drove out the
| many changers. Instead of a
I good salary and a fine automo
bile and a chicken dinner, Jesus
i walked and wore sandies and
I husk the grain from the field
and ate in the field, and by the
seaside He ate the fish. He didn’t
wait for the backing of men to
(preach the Gospel. But He back
ed them out of His way with the
Gospel and went forward.
Yes, may God pity a weak,
(handfolded man that will quit
Sand say, “I can’t go without the
backing of men.”
Brother, we ought to preach
the Gospel of Christ, backing or
no backing. I say preach the
Gospel of Christ if it upsets hell
and the devil, and turns his play
house upside down. You can
preach the Gospel without a
radio program, even without a
car, even without a church, even
without price. Yes, when you
stand in a ragged pair of blue
overalls on the street corner
without a dime and defend the
Gospel of Jesus Christ, and tell
it to the world, you are a real
minister of our Saviour and your
backing will come from God. Fbr
God loves the faithful.
Old Stephen didn’t wait for
men to back him. He stood for
Christ and the truth until he
was stoned. Tb“ three Hebrew
men were not backed by peo
ple. Neither Daniel, who was
least to the lions. Neither was
Noah backed by the public. But
he kept building. Paul was ac
cused and sent from one ruler
to another and escaped for his
life. Paul and Silas were beaten
and imprisoned for the Gospel
work. These men were deter
mined to preach the Gospel, live
or die. backing or no backing.
But think of this modern day,
how it is that men will seek for
the field where they can get the
backing of money and attend
ance and of buses, and singers
nnd of beatuiful locations of
churches.
Beloved, who is going to roll
up his sleeves and take the
Bible and accept a work where
sinners are dying for the world,
where the deacons are crossed,
where the people are split in
groups, and Iceburgs In the amen
corner, dead, lifeless singing,
droopers. had attendance,
church repairs needed. Oh. yes,
some must move. Who is the
hero of the Lord, that will say.
“Lord, here am I. send me.”
Yes. I know the more backing
we get. the more we can do.
But when it comes to nb back
ing, let the Gospel of Christ be
preached just the same
