Woman's Club Pres.
Honored at Meet
The Summerville Woman’s
Club presented its retiring pres
ident, Mrs. Eugene Hamner, with
a sterling silver sandwich tray
in appreciation for her year of
service and endeavor at its De
cember 9 meeting held at the
Riegeldale Tavern. The presen
tation was made by the retiring
vice-president, Mrs. Willis James.
A highlight of the meeting
was the special Christmas music
brought by the Trion Glee Club
under the direction of Mrs. My
ron Wakefield.
Miss Wilma Pace, county pub
lic health nurse, was the princi
pal speaker and was introduced
by Mrs. Gist.
Miss Pace spoke to the Wo
man’s Club on the accomplish
ments of the County Health De
partment in its one and one-half
years existence. She told of how
the Health Department was the
dream of some of the Club’s
members and how it was through
the leadership and drive of these
women whose interest in the con
trol of tuberculosis and other
health problems brought the
Health Department into actual
being. She congratulated the
Woman’s Club for their past
work in cancer control and for
their plans for 1950 in forming
a Cancer Society in Chattooga
County on a year-round pro
gram.
Miss Pace revealed that since
January of this year, 672 tuber
culosis cases, contacts and sus
pects have been admitted to the
services of the Health Depart
ment and that 577 of these had
been X-rayed. She pointed out
that through the educational ef
forts of the local Tuberculosis
Association, the cooperation of
the local physicians, an X-ray
machine in the Health Depart
ment and a health clerk to op
erate it and keep the office open
for all other services, and a
county health nurse to visit, had
more than proved their worth
in “case finding” and “follow
up” so essential in tuberculosis
control.
In her concluding remarks,
Miss Pace said: “Our Summer
ville doctors have worked with
your Health Department 100%
and if the lay people of Summer
ville and the County give their
