SHS Swamps Trion in Two
Games; Girls 31-11, Boys 73-36
BY T. EMMETT NUNN
Getting fancier by the day and
extending a now prolonged win
ning streak by night, the In
dians, of SHS, now are toasted to
11 wins in a row with the girls
riding a five out of six current
streak.
Hitting highs now nothing
new to the boys, Sewell Cash
was riding the crest of a goal
sinking spree with 33 points
against the hapless Bulldogs.
Bobby Bush, also at his best,
rode in for his high total so far
this season by netting 23 points,
2 better than his 21 against Lee
High last week.
To bring the scoreboard to
date after missing last week’s is
sue, Summhrville pressed passed
Dalton and Lyerly in tough
rounds week before last by tak
ing the Saturday night Dalton
game at Summerville, 44 to 38.
The young ladies of Miss Jo
Maret did likewise by 39 to 27,
with Barbara Cash getting 20
points, Carlene Woods 11 and
Joyce Groce 8.
Against Lyerly on a 34 to 31
count, Bobby Bush and Johnny
Brady, of the losers, each count
ed 15 points as Sewell Cash had
S and Cook on the opposition
had 6. Nix, Dacus and Gamble
all counted for SHS with Ray,
Berry and Ragland likewise for
Lyerly.
Summerville girls, 37 to 18- in
the opener, with Cash again at
19. Carlene Woods 14. and Groce
4 Barrett. Berry, Vaughn and
Stallings brought in LHS points
as Anderson, Murphy and Gay
lor covered the defensive end.

Holding down the opposition’s
scoring as usual for the Red and
Black, Mary Lina Powell. Martha
Tutton and Sybil Brown are al
-1 ways heavily depended on and
i they continue to produce the
■ play that keeps SHS opponents
on the short end.
Against Trion on Tuesday this
• week, these guards were at their
peak allowing one field goal over
। three quarters of play after two
. goals in the first quarter. Com
, Ing in also for plenty of play
■ and backing up for the starters
, Teddar, Palmer, Berry. McCurdy,
■ Barnes and Alexander will be
the teams mainstays in seasons
ahead.
In last week's play, the SHS
. girls lost a thriller to Lee High’s
always tops combine on a 29 to
28 last minute free throw and
their only drawback out of six
' times starting.
1 Bouncing back last Thursday
at Summerville, LaFayette’s girls
were treated to a rebound lick
ing by 41 to 20 as Joyce Groce
came on with 14 points along
with Woods, and Cash brought
up a 13 point total.
In a freak of some sort, the
I boys game was cancelled because
of wet floor that made treacher
out walking much the less a fast
moving game. A heavy coating of
wax caused moisture collecting
from room heat and the slick
floor forced the call off. Tonight
has been set as the rturn game
on the high school floor.
Summerville Romps on Trion
Inflictng the largest score on
any opponent and topping a 72
points that Dalton threw at the
Blues earlier, the Indians were
'at their far best on passing,
faking and good shooting to roll
the 73 to 36 score.
As the scoring went and a
few odds and ends from the
play, at the first quarter end.
SHS led 22 to 5 after Trion drew
first at 3 to 0.
In the second period, Sum
merville shot at the basket 18
times with each shot averaging
one point. Ten shots were good
:to score 18 points and lead 40
to 13 at the half.
j At that time Bobby Nix had 2
points. Dacus had 2 and Sim
Hawkins, subing from Flanna
gan. had not scored. Norris
Gamble was also out of the line
up but the loss of him and Billy
iwas not felt.
In their spree, Cash had 19
i points and Bush 17. as the lead,
piled.
At the third round end, Sum
i merville had shot 24 times and
|collected 22 points on 11 ringers,
including free throws and was,
। on top 62 to 22.
In the final quarter with subs
' flowing free from the Pinhol
'ster’s bench. 15 shots netted ll 1
points as Trion tossed in 14 for
their 36 final.
In the roundup was Cash 33,
Bush 23, Dacus 8. Nix 7 and
Hawkins 2.
For Trion, Malcolm Nelson had
11, Tommy Reynolds 8, Willie
Joe McGraw 9. Ralph Tilley 4
and Joe Hood 4.
