Unique Cane Sent
From Here to N. Y.
A unique walking cane was
mailed from Summerville last
week by E. T. Meggison to his
nephew in Brooklyn. N. Y
The cane, made by Mr Meggi
son’s father, is unique in that it
is made of scrub ivy.
“In the Allegheny Mountains
in Virginia,” Mr. Meggison said,
“w’here my father was raised,
this bush was very popular, al
though it doesn’t grow at all
here. Usually’ the bushes were
very short and were very
crooked. However, my father
watched this one grow and
plucked it for a walking cane in
1888. All the neighbors said it
was the biggest and longest
piece of scrub ivy they’d ever
seen.”
The elder Mr. Meggison had
an ivory handle (now turned a
ripe yellow with age) and a gold
band put on the lowly scrub ivy
and the result was a lovely and
different type of cane.
Mr. Meggison wants it kept in
the family and sent it to his
nephew, whom he said he was
sure would appreciate the gift
and treasure it for the relic that
it is. (
