WE WERE PROUD
Friendliness and a spirit of
good fellowship prevailed in
Summerville last Wednesday.
It was the day of the May
Day Festival, the first such
undertaking by the young and
evidently progressive Retail
Merchants Association. We
hope it will be only the first
of many such worthwhile
projects.
As has been aptly said many
times in the week since, the day
was a success and everyone
had a good time.
But the point which inter
ests us to a great extent is the
fact that we learned Summer
ville CAN do what other cities
have done and are doing. This
was proven.
Many of us on many oc
casions have shied away from
larger projects such as this
one, perhaps fearing lack of
cooperaton. We feel that no
longer can this be an obstacle
of enterprising groups such as
the Retail Merchants Associa
tion. Certainly no town has
ever seen better cooperation
from everyone than was seen
in the preparation and in the
actual day itself.
We think that everyone was
proud of Summerville and
Chattooga County last Wed-

nesday. We were. It was great
seeing our homefolks laugh
and play together; seeing
them shake hands with a zest
sometimes forgotten in these
hurried days.
And undoubtedly, everyone
is pleased to learn that the
R.M.A. is planning another
similiar event.
And the next time, as we did
this time, let’s all cooperate!
Letter to the Editor
; Dear Sir:
As you know, last Wednesday
। the Retail Merchants Association
| “pulled” their first large under

and Chattooga County its first

I • The success of this day de
. pended entirely upon many busi
nesses and their associates. We
I would like to take this oppor
! tunity to offer our thanks and
gratitude not only to Mr. John
D. Taylor, our able master of
ceremonies, but also to all of
those who gave willingly of their
I time and money to make this
1 possible. Through the coopera
| tion of the kind we had, we hope
to continue doing things of this
nature to show our apreciation
to our friends and customers for
| their patronage.
Yours truly,
HOWARD BOHANAN,
President, Retail

Trion Tops Shannon, 9-8; Plays J
Lindale at 8:15 p. m. Friday
BY T. EMMETT NUNN
The Chattooga County com
bination that has now assembled
under the Trion banner has a
new slogan. Previously, it was al
ways they were to play the
Brighton Bombers. Now they say,
“We are going down to beat
Shannon,” and that’s what the
story was last Sunday.
’ Three times they rebounded to
1 get back on top and with some
■ shitfing and squirming, espe
! cially late in the nerve shatter
: ing duel, pulled out to stay and
for the second time a Trion
■ squad has done same, in the
- 3-year Textile League stretch.
> johnny Nelson, starting his
- first baseball trek for Trion on
i the mound, saw his second
i inning 2 to 0 lead fade in the
f second but a rebound in the fifth
f with Gene Kelley taking over
f and notching his third win in
5 as many tries. Jim Keown, doing
. relief work, came on in the
; bottom ninth to save the day
5 as Trion’s 13 - hit barrage cou
i pled with some nifty expensive
r Brighton miscues, gave a 9 to 6
lead earlier; but with a walked
in run by Kelley, a hit and two
more walks brought the young
reliefer up for his part.
Shannon collected 9 hits, one
being a round trip, sporting a
mate ahead as hit by Red Jones,
the Brighton leftfielder and
leadoff man.
On the soggy Shannon turf,
after the first round week-end
games were rained out at Trion,
Lindale and Talapoosa, Trion
■ was charged with 2 errors while
s Shannon made 5.
1 Deaner Brown Hits, Dacus
J Fields Best
Upholding family traditions in
- speed and punch, Deaner Brown
1 stepped back into his leadoff
1 spot for Trion and sapped out 3
1 hits to pace the winning spree
- and added one more stolen base
. running his totals to look some
-1 thing like 7 hits in 11 trips with
; 5 stolen bases. Deaner has moved
defensively to the outfield as the
. Trion roster is packed with in
fielders, and Sunday he was in
left for Wayne Groce, who was
filling a singing date with the
Harmony Boys.
Joe Faye Dacus, the spirited
young SHS hustler, in his final
game at short was looking like
a top prospect and may bring
some of the sensational high
school play he has just com
pleted into the Textile League.
In hitting some of Sunday’s
high spots, Manager Roy Wil
liams’ play was demanding of
notice with a sparkling play of a
Brighton foul that he chased
into the grandstand to make a
circus grab and his elimination
of a possible run on an attempt
ed double steal. Roy’s perfect
[rifle shot to John Bvars at
third in the seventh killed that
try and was so fast the first base
runner could not advance.
Buck Rich proved again his
pinch hit speciality with a sixth
inning punch good for 2 runs in
that 3-run uprising.
Gene Kelley, by his pitching,
found time to lash out 2 singles
in 3 trips.
All around again it was hustle
that accounted for Trion’s suc
cess and coupled with the speed
that the club has now mustered
they will be hard to handle.
In Deaner Brown, Joe Dacus,
Glenn Hall, Bobby Bush, J. W.
Greenwood, J. L. Alexander,
Wayne Groce, John Byars and
the newest addition of Jack
Cash, there is the most speed on
