CRAVEY ASSAILS
MISREPRESENTING
FUND SOLICITOR
ATLANTA — Insurance Com
missioner Zack D. Cravey has
warned Georgians to be wary of
a young man “purporting to be
from my office” who is soliciting
funds from insurance companies
“for a safety educational cam
paign among the high schools
and other state bodies.”
“Whoever this man is, he is
an out and out imposter," Com
missioner Cravey stated. “Never
in my publie career have I sol
icited funds for any department
under my supervision for any
purpose whatsoever. If and when
I do, such solicitation would
come in a letter over my own
signature.”
Mr. Cravey said his attention
was called to the activities of the
“imposter” by a letter received
from an insurance company of
j ficial.
| The official wrote he had been
telephoned by the man who
I stated he was phoning from the
' "insurance commissioner’s of
; fice” and asked for a contrlbu
j tion. When he showed up for the
j check, investigation revealed, the
। official declared, that the man
| had made the call from the
I Capitol building but had no con
! nection with the insurance com
j missioner’s office and was rep
resenting a private enterprise
' operating out of a South Georgia
j city.
Mr. Cravey said he was taking
| up the matter with the Atlanta
I Better Business Bureau.
CRAVEY SALUTES
BOY SCOUTS ON
47TH BIRTHDAY
ATLANTA — Pointing out that
Safety and Firemanship are two
important phases of the march
of a Boy Scout to the attainment
of merit badges and eventual
winning of the coveted Eagle
Badge. Safety Fire Commissioner
Zack D. Cravey has saluted the
Boy Scouts of America on their
47th anniversary. This is being
observed during the month of
February.
Writing editorially in the Feb
ruary issue of The Georgia Fire
Cracker, Commissioner Cravey
cites the Boy Scouts and also
congratulates all boys and girls
who are carrying out the fine
points of good citizenship which
they have learned under our
democratic system of govern
ment.
He especially notes the hund
reds of boys and girls in Geor
gia schools who are fostering
these principles by serving as
Junior Fire Marshals and Junior ।
Fire Inspectors under the com--|
mission’s program of fire safety I
in schools.
“By emphasising the danger of
carelessness with fire both at;
school and at home, these young-|
sters are exemplifying good citi-1
zenship to as great a degree as
the Boy Scouts, dirl Scouts and
members of the Four H Clubs,
the Future Farmers of America,
and the Future Home Makers,",
Mr. Cravey wrote.

Cook Picked For Second
Congress Trip to Oppose
'Civil Rights' Measures
Attorney General Eugene Cook
a staunch segregationist, ma y
appear next month in Congress
before an all-Yankee subcom
mittee to give Georgia’s opposl
। tion to a rash of civil rights
bills.
“Chairman Emanuel Cellers
(D-N. Y.) of the House Judiciary
Committe yielded to Georgia
pressure for a hearing on the
j bills but named a subcommittee
i composed entirely of non-South
j erners to hear the opposition,”
I Mr. Cook said.
“It’s like going before a stack
ed jury, and something I never
have experienced as a lawyer,
but Georgia’s viewpoint on this
vicious legislation must be put
into the record,” he said. “Cel
lers appointed himself subcom
mittee chairman and rounded
out the membership with Con
gressmen who had either spon
sored some of the bills in ques
tion, voted last year for adop
tion.”
New Social Security
Landowners Law
Farm landowners as well as
sharecroppers may not be self
employed for social security pur
poses. The income a farm land
owner receives from a sharefarm
ing agreement is covered by a
recent .change in the social sec
urity law if the rental arrange
ment calls for the farmer to take
an important part in the opera
tion of the farm and he act
ually does so. according to Glen
Porter, manager of the Rome
social security office.
This provision of the new' law
is met if the farmer participates
to a material degree in the pro
duction .or management of a
crop or livestock on land he
rents. Sharecroppers have been
covered as self-employed since
the beginning of 1955. The new
| law covering landowners applies
!to all types of farm rental ar
rangements including cash rent,
standing rent, share rental and
share-fanning arrangements.
The landowner who materially
participates in the operation of
his farm should report his net
' earnings for 1956 for social sec
। urity purposes at the time he
' files his income tax return after
■ the close of the year. Farmers
| who would like to have more in
formation regarding this new’
phase of the law- should contact
their nearest social security of
-1 fice.
Chances of war in the Middle

inated” if Congress passes the

to shut out so completely the
voice of opposition by forming a
subcommittee.
“The fact that no Southerners
were named to the subcommittee
shows the utter disregard some
of these champions of ultra-lib
eralism have for the South’s
views or its problems,” Cook
said.
Mr. Cook, along with Governor
Marvin Griffin, Lt. Governor
Ernest Vandiver and House
Speaker Marvin Moate, had wir
ed the Georgia delegation to

SOCIAL SECURITY :
CREDIT ON FARM ■
LANDS RENTAL
Will you get social security 1
credit for 1956 on land you rent)
to another farmer? Under a re-j:
cent change in the social security i
law, you may receive credit de>!
pending on the rental agreement I
and on how much you participate :
in the crop production or man- j
agement of the farm, Glen Por-'
ter, manager of the Rome social
security office, said today.
If you simply rent the land in I
return for cash or a share of the I
crop or livestock, and you take
no part in the production or I
management, then the cash or
crop share you receive is rental !
income and does not count to- ■
ward social security.
Here is how you may meet the i
requirements of the new provi- j
sion.
First, there must be an ar-1
rangement between you and the
renter that you will take part in
the management or production
This arrangement may be either
written or oral. Second, you must
take part to a material degree
in the production or manage-1
ment.
If you do no physical work,i
you may take a material part
in the production or manage
ment by advising regularly with
the person who rents the land,
by inspecting production reg- !
ularly, furnishing equipment,
machinery, or livestock, or pay
ing part of the expenses of pro
duction.
Mr. Porter pointed out that
each of these must be consider- I
