MRS. BURGESS ACCOMPANIES ROME
LADIES ON PARRIS ISLAND VISIT
By S SRt. Frank Saldana USMC
PARRIS ISLAND, S. C., Feb
15 — A group of Rome, Georgia,
^area women left this east coast
Marine training base this after
noon with a better understand
ing of Leatherneck training
methods.
Though many represented civic
groups, PTA and church or
ganizations, the majority were
mothers interested in their chil
dren's future.
Flying in from Rome’s Russell
Field, the 22 women were greeted
at the nearby Marine Corps
Auxiliary Air Station by Col.
Warren P. Baker, Depot G-l
(Administration), who with a
staff of officers and enlisted
Marines conducted the tour.
Their first stop was at the
War Memorial Building where
they watched marine recruits
learn fundamentals in Judo and
the art of self defense.
Stopping at a physical train
ing area, they observed future
Marines team together and do
calesthenics with a 400-pound

log. Other recruits were running
through an obstacle course, play
ing tug-a-war, and doing muscle
coordination exercises.
At the 2nd Recruit Training
Battalion mess hall, the ladies
were amazed at the quantity,
quality and variety of food being
prepared for 1,400 hungary Mar
ines standing by for lunch. As
one lady put it, “I thought meal
planning for my husband and
two children was a chore, but it’s
hardly a problem compared to
what these men do. And it’s all
so appetizing too.”
Before lunching, the ladies
were introduced to Major Gen
eral H. I. Litzenberg. command
ing general of the Marine Corps
Recruit Depot, and Brigadier
General Wallace M. Greene, Jr.,
Recruit Training Commander.
General Litzenberg gave a
summary on what Marine ac
tivities in this area means to the
economy of the southeastern part
of this country.
General Greene, using charts,
gave a graphic talk on every
phase of recruit training; its ob
jective; a profile on the average
recruit and his tutor, the Marine
Drill Instructor.
After visiting the Ist Recruit
Training Battalion where they
toured a barracks and watched
recruits perform various drill
formations, the ladies traveled to
the Weapons Training Battalion.
There they watched a recruit
platoon undergo swimming in
struction at a huge indoor pool.
It was pointed out that each in
structor is Red Cross qualified.
Marksmanship training fascin
ated the ladies. They observed
recruits shooting the rifle and
later a demonstration of Marine
firepower with basic weapons.
While observing the accurate
shooting of Technical Sergeant
W. E. Hall, one of the Marine
Corps’ top marksmen, Mrs. Henry
Fulbright of Rome exclaimed,
“I’m glad you’re on our side.”
The ladies were afforded an
opportunity to test their ability
with the pistol, shooting at tar
gets 15 yards distance.
Following this shooting, Mrs.
E. C. Sanders of Rockmart, Ga.,
said, “I’ve always had a fear of
weapons . . . this is the bravest
thing I have ever done, wait til
I tell my children.”
At the Woman Recruit Train
ing Battalion, the group were
shown through the spotless
quarters provided women Marine
recruits and their modern class
rooms.
A weekly parade conducted by
Marine Staff Non-commissioned
Officers highlighted the tour.
During the ceremonies, eight
Marine jet planes roared over
the parade ground, demonstrat
ing Leatherneck’s aerial might.
It was pointed out that for the
first time a Woman Marine,
M Sgt. Bertha Peters, reviewed
the passing formations of com
bat clad Leathernecks, com
memorating Hie WM’s 14tli an
niversary.
Throughout the tour, t he Rome
group showed Intense interest in
every facet of training, con
stantly asking questions, taking
notes and photographs.
All agreed that the tour gave
them a now insight of recruit
training.
As one lady observed, “My son
! is now sixteen. He has always
wanted to be a Marine. Naturally
I wondered if it would be a wise
decision. Now that I have seen
the training here first hand, I’m
fully convinced that he would
profit by joining the Marines.”
Their visit was part of Parris
Island’s “Open-Gate” policy and
arranged through the 6th Marine
Corps Reserve Recruitment Dis
trict in Atlanta, Ga.

ville, and Mrs. A. J. Strickland
