About Your
Home
Wc are told that the chemise
influence has spread to chairs.
As in ages past, what a woman
wears determines the chair she
sits in.
This year’s knee-hugging sil
houette has raised the sitting
level and shortened the depth of
the seat cushion of at least one
chair. Quite the contrary was
true in the eighteenth century,
when the panniers of the French
distaff aristocracy widened and
lowered Louis chairs. In the last
century, Victorian women sat in
chairs with arms. They were de
signed so that her hoops w'ould
not become enmeshed with the
limbs of the furniture.
The Chemise chair combines
many developments seen today
in other chairs. It has a swivel
base that also tips forward. This
feature facilitates sitting and
rising with ease, and prevents
hemlines from sliding up.
The seat cushion of this new
chair is nineteen inches off the
floor, about an inch or two high
er than usual for lounge chairs.
The depth of the seat cushion to
the back of the chair is twenty-

Many dining tables and chairs
have been made much lower dur

chemise influence in furniture is ।
not to be with us for too long.
Not only the general appear

the chair itself is not as com

Perfection
A man who had been a bachelor
most of his life finally married
and settled down. One day he
met a friend who had known
him in the old days and the
friend asked him what he
thought of married life
"Well." replied the benedict. “I
married the girl of my dreams
i and she was worth waiting for.
She still is as beautiful to me as
the day that I met her. Her

Her hair is never untidy and her

“No,” was the reply, “but I

Now You Know
It was late when the daughter
of the house came down to
breakfast. Her mother greeted
her with a smile.
“Darling,” she said, “you were
awfully late coming in last night.
I’m afraid I'm dreadfully old
fashioned, but I should like to
know where you go.”
“The daughter smiled," cer

replied. “I dined with—oh, well
